I think that silicones are wonderful, the protect your hair form breaking, make it shiny and look healthy..but it is true that it can build up and wear your hair down...but as long as you use a silicone free shampoo once in a while it should be ok..silicones are not an alternative for quality natural ingredients though, which actually can improve your hair, not only protect it and make it shiny...so once in a while we should use approved natural products as for example coconut oil or others, just do a reasearch.

I'm always surprised when people rave about the no sulfates or 'cones products. My hair does best with "traditional" shampoos and conditioners. Silicones smooth my frizz and I don't notice them weighing down my hair. Is there any science about how hair can respond differently to those ingredients?

I can't speak to the science, but in my personal experience since I went no-cone my normally-lank hair gained a lot more lift.
