Professor Auntie asks…Do you think we’ll be spraying liquid glass on our hair soon?
The Left Brain says:
Auntie is referring to a story I Tweeted about a few days ago about “SiO2 ultra-thin layering” technology.
According to Physorg.com this sprayable glass coating, consisting of nano-sized silicon dioxide particles in water or ethanol, could revolutionize “almost everything” because it can protect any surface from environmental factors like moisture, UV radiation, dirt, heat, and even bacteria. Follow the link to read more about this fascinating new discovery.
Glass for hair?
Considering the protective properties of this technology and given that the coating is flexible and invisible, there is certainly potential application to hair care. If this product is proven safe, I certainly think you will be seeing salon hair treatments with it first. Then eventually it will be brought to the mass market. But that could be 5 to 10 years or more. (The Right Brain disagrees with me and thinks that instead that it will come from a major beauty company that has the resources to do the research and development. I guess time will tell which one of us is right.)
What do YOU think? Can you think of any other uses for this kind of breakthrough coating? Leave a comment and brainstorm with the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

Well I have been using liquid-glass on my hair now for three years and love it! Stops chlorine from the swimming pool entering my hair, but also stops oil, grease and grime. If my hair was dyed I guess it would protect the colour and the condition. I simply wash with a little water and go! That environmentally positive and time saving!
I don’t even like regular hairspray. I certainly wouldn’t let anyone come near me with spray on glass!
Hmmmm–I am willing to risk nanoparticles for a wearable sunblock that doesn’t irritate my skin, but I guess I want more safety data before I spray them on my hair, especially with the greater risk of inhaling them….what do y’all think about nanoparticles and health risks?
fascinating article!
Wait, I’ve got another question – if this stuff is newish and isn’t approved for cosmetic use yet, how can Dermott say he’s been using it for years?
‘Cause he doesn’t care about nanothings. He sprays his hair with real liquid glass. It hurts a bit and it’s not all that practical when it breaks but it’s totally worth it.
Thanks for following up on my question about liquid glass, Left Brain. To answer your question, I would definitely try liquid glass on my hair. I’d just try it on a small section from the back of my head first, to make sure it didn’t destroy my hair. I’d probably want to dye my hair first and make sure I liked the color, because it sounds like once the liquid glass coating was on it, it would be impossible to ever color the hair again. Of course I’d wear a gas mask or something to make sure I didn’t breathe it in. Yes, I’d be a guinea pig! But this is all still in the realm of sci-fi anyway.
I would try this it sounds amazing. Do anyone work on this now?
I would definitely use this.
