sometimes I think fragrance free means that added another chemical condpound to mask or just neturalized the lotion or facial treatment could be irriating could be healthy for a prevention of a migraine. I think its always a bit tricky in skincare and the additonal hype parabens are bad and the do nots, "its all chemicals go organic". I for one think vaseline is a sensational humacant, i think holisitcs organic cream is a bunch of hocus pocus. Parabens are far better so much better then a formheldyde donor. 5 parabens??? I say yes and they are safe!!!

I wish cosmetics companies would stop putting fragrances in their products. Honestly, even if your shampoo does smell good to you, by the time you use your soap, conditioner, deodorant, body lotion, styling products, and makeup and put on clothes washed with scented detergent and fabric softener all the scents have mixed together. And yet, consumers often react more positively to highly scented products. I have seen several posts on this site today mentioning choosing a product based on the scent.

The problem with all these fragrances is that some people are sensitive to them. I, myself, have a terrible time finding soaps and hair products I can use at all. I have pretty much given up on finding shampoo and conditioner that make my hair look good--I have to settle for what doesn't turn my face red and scaly.

jc, I totally agree, even though I am not always a fan of Paula's. Although I will admit, Nancy, you have given me food for thought and do have some very strong points.

Trae, I hear you! I have fragrance sensitivity too, and while I don't expect people to forgo fragranced items altogether, I wish people wouldn't go overboard. That goes for laundry powder too, which can often have an overpowering scent when people use too much.

I think the issue of allergy and fragrance is a bit more complicated than other allergenic compounds because there is an issue here of causing problems for others, too. It would be great if people simply used less fragrance, but the problem is, I think most people aren't doing it intentionally. I have read you can become desensitised to your perfume if you are using it all the time. (I suspect part of it is that it stays in your clothing even after washing). But I also think, with more and more products being scented (it is a struggle to find unscented toilet paper or garbage bags in recent years) and more strongly so, people are getting desensitised to fragrance in general.

I actually believe it would be good if more people chose at least some fragrance free products, be it for skin or cleaning, just to readjust their noses and learn when something is heavily scented or when they are over-perfuming themselves. I think as a society, we need to guard against becoming so dependent on heavy fragrances and thinking we need to those for ourselves and our environments to smell fresh. It would not only help out people with allergies a lot, it would lessen the environmental impact of heavy use of these substances.

One thing I would like this article to have addressed in more detail is Begoun's claim that irritation is taking place even when you can't see it, and whether this applies to fragrances. I don't feel satisfied just hearing it is not based on science. Begoun claims her philosophy is based on science, so who do I believe? I feel it's a necessary argument to address if the counter-argument is that they are only a problem for people with allergies/sensitivities.

Being a male with very sensitive can be quite frustrating as most products targeted towards us are harsh on the skin and causing it to become dry, break out in a rash, or pimples!

Thus driving me to swallow my pride and take a stroll down the "female" product aisle lol. I've tried olay, clinique, etc- you name it but to no avail. Until one day I saw a an ad for Dove's Unscented Sensitive Skin Soap. Gave that a shot and has now become the only cleanse that ill ever use on my body again.

Just a heads up for any other males that stumble upon this.

Best Regards,
Male
