Midnite Rain asks…I have dark skin, and i would love to have a much more fairer complexion. I have read that Uva Ursi (Bearberry Extract) is good for lightening African American skin, and I’ve also heard that L-Glutathione is great too. So, if i want to max my skin lightening, is it safe and more efficient to use both at the same time?

The Right Brain responds:

Midnite’s question prompted a good discussion in our Forum about the various options for lightening/whitening your skin. (There was even a bit of a philosophical argument about whether you SHOULD lighten your skin or not!) Click through to our Forum to read about ingredients that have been shown to effectively lighten dark spots.

You should also understand what ingredients you should NOT use to lighten skin. Mercury is one good example. Mercury compounds like mercurious chloride, mercury oxide and ammoniated mercury can penetrate the skin and deactivate the enzyme involved in melanin production. These chemicals essentially turn off the switch that causes dark spots to appear. Unfortunately, long term use of these products can cause neurological and kidney damage so have banned from cosmetic use. This is a very timely discussion since it was recently discovered that many commercially available brands of skin lighteners still contain illegal levels of mercury. You can read the entire story in the Chicago Tribute.

I have to say that the idea of skin whitening is horrific. I used to live in China and there are so many products on the shelves that promise girls they will be better the whiter they are. I guess being tan in America means we have enough leisure time to lay in the sun, although the tanned women in China are tanned and wrinkled from working in the fields so to look young you keep out of the sun using an umbrella. I love all the colors we are – white is NOT better and I have “white” skin. All this stuff to make us feel bad about ourselves and get us to spend money on s*it we don’t need because we’re not good enough the way we are. Plus the products have poisons in them! What will women do to themselves in lieu of being happy and confident the way we are? It’s terrible!

Not all skin lightening products are safe. Lead, mercury, steroids, hydroquinone are all effective whitening chemicals but are extremely dangerous for your body. And in the long run will ruin your skin. So avoid those products. As rule of thumb, choose products that are based from natural ingredients, meaning they are safe to eat.

@Joan – Well, I’m a white woman who wants lighter skin. Actually, I just want to lighten my freckles. Especially on the left side of my forehead near the hairline. I never used to wear makeup daily so years of driving while that side faced the sun has left it so freckled it’s almost one huge brown spot.

@ Joan I wholeheartedly agree. But then I have seen TV documentaries on how, in some countries, you would get better jobs, the lighter your skin. I think in some countries women are under a lot of pressure.

Jami,

Yup–for the past 4 years, I drive an hour per day in daylight, 3 days per week, and all my problems are on the driver’s side. Wish I’d realized sooner I was damaging my skin, didn’t even occur to me. But incidentally, I always think people who have coloring that naturally freckles look attractive with their natural freckling–not that that matters, it’s what you like on yourself that matters.

Ashley, be careful about the idea that natural ingredients = safe. Lead is natural, so is hydroquinone. Safety should be determined by studies that demonstrate lack of harm.

I have heard of Hydoroquinone as another dangerous ingredients for skin lightening. Unfortunately many of consumers are not educated about these cosmetic ingredients and people often choose these type of quick result products.

not all skin lightening creams are bad. Some are good quality and safe to use.

Super Skin Lightener, it’s one of the best there is because it was the first skin lightening cream to be made without the dangerous chemicals.

Super Skin Lightener

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Skin_Lightener
Super Skin Lightener is a UK manufactured skin lightening product. Super Skin Lightener was the first skin lightening formula to be launched worldwide containing Arbutin, Glycyrrhiza, Mulberry and Scutellaria clinically proven safe skin lightening agents at a time when hydroquinone was the main active agent in most preparations to lighten the skin or for pigmentation problems

Using natural ingredients are really gentle to the skin when applied yet they are very potent. Just like the cream I’m using now, Neucell Skin Lightening cream is also an anti-oxidant that helps enrich and even out complexion using only natural products such as avocado oil and apricot kernel oil. It is an all in one cream for me, because other stuff requires you to do other procedures before you can really apply the cream or serum to the areas that you want to even out.

I always wondered if the classic milk, honey and lemon bath did anything. It makes my skin feel nice at least!
