Crista’s question…I have a question on home made facial moisturizers. I’m a “make your own nut” with moisturizers, laundry soaps, miscellaneous cleaners, and add-ins for conditioners ( I’m big on coconut oil). Anyway enough with the jibberjabber. I start with Biosilk fruitcocktail as a base, (here’s a strange fact I was told by a cock fighting, i.e. fighting chickens, models hair dresser that it makes a good moisturizer) and then I add coconut oil and shea butter. It works for me. Just wondering your thoughts – Is it good? Bad? None of the above?
The Right Brain’s response:
Our first thought in response to your question is: Fighting chickens have hairdressers??? You’ve GOT to write back and explain that one! But let’s get back to your question.
Do It Yourself Danger
While we applaud your do it yourself attitude, you do need to be careful when mixing your own products. The number one danger is that the home made products typically are not properly preserved against microbial growth. That’s means your product could grow bacteria or mold that could end up giving you an infection. So be careful!
But for the moment let’s go crazy and ignore that danger. Does mixing Biosilk fruit cocktail with coconut oil and shea butter make a good hair conditioner? Mmmmmaybe. Coconut oil is one of the few natural oils that will penetrat hair, so it can have some benefit if you leave it on long enough. Shea butter can be helpful as a leave-on product but it won’t do much for hair is you rinse it off. So your home made mix might not be bad for your hair but we’d be surprised if it’s better than the products you can buy.

This is a re-post of an article from October 31, 2006: http://thebeautybrains.com/2006/10/31/the-number-1-danger-of-mixing-your-own-cosmetics/
My question is: Why??
You also had this question more recently than 2006. Did the answer change?
I seen it was a double post, but I didn’t know it went back to 2006…
That risk is more likely if someone were to store left overs. In my case, I mix fyi facials ingredients prior to instead of using left overs. Your concern would be helpful if someone were to store avocado, worst case scenario. Thanks for your post!!
I notice that the response alluded to hair, but if I’m not mistaken the person asking the question was asking about “HOME MADE FACIAL MOISTURIZERS”…. so I would assume that this concoction is being used on the person’s face.
So I find Right Brain’s (restatement?) of the matter at hand more than a little bit puzzling…. “Does mixing Biosilk fruit cocktail with coconut oil and shea butter make a good hair conditioner?” Hmmmm…
(An aside: the ‘asker’ neglected to offset the ‘i.e.’ portion, but her ‘guru’ is apparently a ‘cockfighting model’s hairdresser’… don’t ask, but I think the model in question might be human. At least, I hope so.)
What gives, brains?
Though the reposting–multiple times now?–is odd, if you read the question carefully, Ruth, it sets up as asking about conditioners and Biosilk is a hair product after all, so it appears the questioner changed her mind mid-question:
“add-ins for conditioners ( I’m big on coconut oil). Anyway [. . .] I start with Biosilk fruitcocktail as a base”
What’s the BB take on using fixed oils (like olive oil) and adding in, say, an essential oil for scent? Or maybe the unscented mineral oil (instead of Baby Oil which just isn’t my kind of scent!) with an essential oil, or even perhaps a fragrance oil? Not something I’d put on my face, but would that be safe enough for body or hair?
This is such a useful resource which you are supplying and you give it away absolutely free. I appreciate seeing web-sites that comprehend the value of delivering a helpful resource for free of charge. I genuinely loved reading through your post
Thanks
Hi Brains, *Off Topic*
I just wanted to say that i am Qualified Beauty therapist (cidesco) i am in the UK and i find your completely honesty and factual answers a godsend as even the salon g**k (for beauty Pro’s) tend to be biased, often not even knowingly.
Dont get me wrong i love Salon G**k very useful but if i ask a question there regarding products i tend info given out by Skin care companies (which is far from always true).
I am looking for brands to retail and i want to offer quality that works. Any thoughts?
I doubt i have made sense? Though dont ever stop doing what you do.
Regards
Annie
