Whether or not you’re big into marine life, it may concern you to hear that it’s probably not great to hear that cosmetics formulators are still using oil from the livers of rare deep-sea sharks in lotions and other products . If you’re reading this right now with grim horror, never fear – a new method may save these sharks from further harm.
According to CosmeticsDesign, environmental groups have long been trying to make this illegal. There are bans on deep-sea shark fishing, and many big companies have decided to try to stop using this product. However, it’s impossible to detect the source from which the composite comes. Researches are now claiming to be able to detect the shark additives, as opposed to olive oil and other oils that don’t involve animals. The study, which took place in Italy, claims to be able to identify the shark oils in a formula as long as there is 10% or more making the compound up.
Goodbye to shark oil, hello to more mauled swimmers!

That is the most disturbing picture ever….is that a shark man?
I think it’s funny, it kind of reminds me of the original Saturday Night Live “land shark” skit (which for all I know is probably posted on youtube by now).
“it may concern you to hear that it’s probably not great to hear that”
Seriously?
“Whether or not you’re interested in marine life, it may concern you to hear that cosmetics formulators are still using oil from the livers of rare deep-sea sharks in lotions and other products. If this grim news horrifies you, never fear – a new method may save these sharks from further harm.”
There I fixed it.
Give me a break! And give them one! Again, they don’t have a budget for proofreaders. Let’s not point out all the typos. They already said they are trying to keep the blog going while working at their regular day jobs and another project behind the scenes.
Standards are subjective things.
That wasn’t a typo, it was poor writing. This is a quality site–it doesn’t need a budget for proofreading, just a few minutes of focus. If the site is being put on the back burner for bigger/better/new things, that’s great. Just don’t let it scald.
The major named ingredient from sharks liver is squalene, it can also be made from plants. So I assume this article is about squalene.
If you see squalene in the component list in a lotion or other cosmetic try and find out if it is from shark or a plant source.
We all make typos – and some days more typos than others. It’s the content that important. The content could have been improved by naming squalene and also giving the reference to the research about detecting shark oil.
I hate sharks!lol It scares me. . .but lets still save them. They’re still one of the endangered species. One of the ways we can stop sharks from being overfished is by reducing the demand for shark products.
shark have tounge….!!!!! must save these varieties…….!!!!!!!!!!!!
