Sign the Safe Cosmetics Alliance Petition

The Safe Cosmetics Alliance, a coalition comprised of the Personal Care Products Council, the Professional Beauty Association, Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors, and the Direct Selling Association, is working with legislators to advance a bill that will strengthen and modernize regulatory oversight of the cosmetic industry while allowing manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, retail owners, salon/spa owners, and licensed beauty professionals to conduct their business.

The Safe Cosmetics Alliance Website, SafeCosmeticsAlliance.org, includes a petition urging lawmakers to support responsible cosmetics legislation based on sound scientific principles. We need your help in generating support for this petition, both through your own participation and by sharing it with friends, family, and colleagues. Anyone using cosmetic and personal care products and services will be affected by future industry regulations, and we need to let them know how to get involved.

You can learn more by joining the conversation on Twitter and Facebook, and by visiting the Website at SafeCosmeticsAlliance.org.

I’m assuming this petition is only for Americans?

Its interesting Safe Cosmetics Alliance chose a name that sounds soooo much like EWG’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. I guess the name We Like the Cosmetic Industry The Way It Is and Strict Legislation Will Negatively Impact Our Bottom Line was too long….. (not many people would “like” that on Facebook!)

Seriously! Before signing this petition I would urge people to consider the fact that The Safe Cosmetics Alliance is pushing for “science-based legislative and regulatory policies”. The problem I have with that how can we create legislation on science that does not yet exist? The fact is that for nearly 90% of the synthetic chemicals used in our personal care products, NO scientific safety studies exist. What is safe about that?

Safe Cosmetics Alliance is the counter campaign to Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, although most people will probably wrongfully assume the organizations are fighting for the same goals. In a nutshell, they are both fighting for legislation but one wants strict legislation, tight restrictions and regulations that favor the consumer (Campaign for Safe Cosmetics) and the other would like less strict legislation in favor of the cosmetics industry (Safe Cosmetics Alliance). Just take a look at who is behind these campaigns for a bit of agenda transparency. The Safe Cosmetics Alliance’s was formed in part by the Personal Care Products Council whose history shows they spend time and money lobbying against regulation, and have launched impressive, persuasive campaigns throughout history any time anyone has tried. Their other three members are cosmetics manufacturers and distributors. http://www.safecosmeticsalliance.org/index.cfm?objectid=586D6FA0-975B-11E0-AD00000C296BA163 The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics list of Endorsing Organizations is way too long to write here and speaks for itself http://safecosmetics.org/article.php?id=278

I read a blog that has some additional good points about this newly formed Safe Cosmetics Alliance and how their vague language and blurry promises should leave people a little unsettled.

@Jenn: Yes this is to influence US legislation.

I find its settling that some will sign a petition with goals so loosely worded and vague as Safe Cosmetics Alliance’s. Safe Cosmetics Alliance
