Can OFF Insect Repellant Dissolve Tights?

by Left Brain on January 2, 2012 · 6 comments

NataliaP says…A friend of mine put on OFF (repellant) all over her legs, she was using the aerosol form. And then she put in black tights. A while later we noticed that her tights/stockings were super blotchy. It was complelty ruined. What happened?

The Left Brain responds:

The active ingredient in OFF is DEET which is an effective solvent that can dissolve rayon, spandex, other synthetic fabrics. Her tights are probably made from some combination of natural and synthetic fibers like nylon or acetate. She should switch to all cotton tights or a non-DEET containing product. Or else just stay indoors.

Wow.. and all I noticed was the unfortunate typo in the ad.

I guess I’ll stay away. I’ve gained weight and had the hardest time finding grey tights that fit me. Apparently, if I don’t lose weight, I’ll soon be in special sizes for hose and tights. So it’s time.

But my mom actually got bitten by a tick on December 30 (!) in New England, where we live. It was DE-sgusting. I saw it feeding on her before she removed it–it was engorged and she had a rash, so she had to get a dose of antibiotic to ward off Lyme disease. So if you don’t have tights on, consider the deet:) Or better yet, frontline your dog, especially if it sleeps with you. Ewww.

I’m fairly sure that tights are thick enough that mosquitoes can’t bite through them anyway. I’m extremely allergic to them, so when I go out I usually just wear tights on my legs and a modified pair to fit over my arms, and I’ve never gotten bitten. That’s impressive considering I’m extremely delicious to them.

Agreed, Amy–I’d consider myself covered if I had tights on. But I guess it could be a problem if you were out and about with your deet on and then changed clothes for the evening into your tights…and voila, blotchy tights.

Or you can take sulfa-based drugs. When I was a kid I was on Septra ALL THE TIME. I had to take it on a regular basis due to chronic bladder & kidney problems. All biting bugs left me alone. Once the doctors said I didn’t have to take Septra anymore, I became a regular buffet.

Whatever you do, just don’t mess around with ticks. Ticks under your tights is not a cool look. I still have the image of my mother with the engorged tick on the back of her leg (in early winter, no less) burned into my brain. Ewww. Parasites are gross!!!!!
