Continuing our look at the top selling beauty products on Amazon.com…

Surprisingly, the #11 best selling beauty product on Amazon (as of today, at least) is Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. Analyzing the label to see what’s in this product will be one of our shortest assignments ever. Ready? Here we go:

Indian Healing Clay Ingredients

  • Bentonite

Yep, that’s it. Just a single ingredient: A clay (officially known as montmorillonite) that is dug straight out of Mother Earth. There are no fillers, colors, fragrances, or preservatives added. Just the thing for all you fans of natural products. But what does this stuff actually do?

Clay face

Most commercial facial masks use clay because it creates a tightening sensation as it dries, giving you the sense that it’s cleaning your pores. This supposedly is why clays been used for centuries to help cure acne. Since clays are good at absorbing oils  so if you have oily skin this kind of mask may help degrease you a bit. Unfortunately, acne is not caused by excess surface oils alone (bacteria is a contributing factor) so a clay mask by itself is unlikely to bust your black heads. Still the comedogenicity rating for bentonite is low which means it won’t make your zits any worse. Plus it’s pretty cheap. So, feel free to give it a try. The tightening as clay dries has to have some sort of effect on zits. I find that it causes them to surface and form heads, so the tightening as it dries must cause enough pressure to force pus closer to the surface.

My face, the oil…Let’s say I can solve the oil crisis with my skin alone. I actually recently learned there is a condition it could have. I was thrilled. Till I found out there really is no cure. Crap.

Clay is an integral part of my facial routine. Every three days and KISS is the motto. I mix two of them. Bentonite, and Kaolin. I put them on with water (no fancy yogurt here, thank you very much) and wait. They dry, I use a warm washcloth and I know I won’t wake up greasy one day of the week. If I miss it, grease ball that grows ginormous zits. Did I mention I’m 48 and this is incredibly unfair?

I know it’s just clay, and it’s not, “pulling out toxins,” I don’t care. It helps. Why? I can guess, but not state without testing and since it’s for me, I don’t have time for it. If I was going to sell masks tomorrow…It’s all anecdotal and maybe something else would work as well, but it also allows me to sit down, alone and watch tv. The kids are afraid of me since I told them my ancestors would put on clay before they went to war. I’m half Native American and have no idea if that is true or not. However, you take the four special needs kids for a day and tell me you won’t tell a fib for five minutes of alone time :)
