Bluecatbaby asks…Every “fragrance-free,” “mineral”, “sensitive skin” sunscreen that I have tried causes itchy rashy spots on my arms and legs. Does anyone know if I could mix up an effective sunscreen using lotion and zinc oxide powder? (I saw a zinc oxide powder on Amazon.com). I don’t need it to be waterproof.
The Right Brain responds:
Mixing your own sunscreen is a bit risky for two reasons:
DIY sun protection peril
First, the zinc oxide particles have to be a certain size and they have to be evenly dispersed in the lotion base. You may end up with a lotion that only gives you partial coverage and you wouldn’t know it until it’s too late. Second, the particles have to be properly suspended or else the next time you go to use your homemade stash all the particles could settle to the bottom and you would get zero sun protection.
The Beauty Brains bottom line
Your skin is too important to experiment on – splurge and buy some good sunscreen!
