Continuing our look at top selling beauty products on Amazon.com…

This product is is Amazon’s #5 best seller and supposedly protects skin’s natural moisture level, provides mild lather, and contains “two antibacterial skin cleaners that cut through soil quickly.” Which ingredients make it work? Let’s look at the label to find out.

Softsoap Naturals Clean Protection Ingredients

Triclosan
The main antibacterial agent in the formula.

Water
Solvent for all the other ingredients.

Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate
Primary cleansing agent. This will provide good lather but it’s still a fairly harsh cleanser compared to other ingredients. However, it is fairly cheap.

Lauramide DEA
Foam booster.

Sodium Chloride
Table salt, used to thicken the product.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Secondary surfactant and foam booster.

Fragrance
Smelly stuff.

Citric Acid
pH control agent.

DMDM Hydantoin
Preservative.

Glycerin
Moisturizer when left on skin but doesn’t do much when rinsed off.

Tetrasodium EDTA
Preservative booster.

Polyquaternium 7
This is the ingredient that “protects skin’s natural moisture” by providing some conditioning effect. It will deposit on skin even after rinsing. This ingredient is also commonly used in 2-in-1 shampoos and hair conditioners.

Silk Peptide, Hydrolyzed Silk Protein, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice
“Natural” ingredients that look good on the label but don’t really do anything from a rinse out cleansing product.

FD&C Red 40 (CI 16035), FD&C Yellow 5 Aluminum Lake, D&C Red 33 (CI 17200)
Colorants
