I’m seeing a disturbing new trend in beauty press releases recently: They actually contain useful information!
Findation.com
Okay all snarkiness aside, last week we were pleasantly surprised to learn about beauty tips for on the cheapest beauty ingredient ever. This week it’s breaking news on Findation.com, an innovative website that helps you find the perfect foundation shade through crowd sourcing. Allow me to quote the press release:
Findation.com is a global project (currently in beta), creating the world’s largest usable database of matching foundation shades. Findation.com uses an algorithm to recommend similar shades, based on the matches entered by other foundation users. That means we need lots of people to tell us what foundations they use to give the best shade recommendations possible…you can help by telling us which shades you use. It’s easy! Go to www.findation.com Enter the foundation shades that you use that are a good match for your skin. The more matches you can enter, the better.
If any of the Beauty Brains community uses Findation.com, leave a comment and let us know how you like the experience.

So far I’m not impressed. I entered two shades that work for me and it recommended ‘Pupa No Tranfer Foundation – Ultra Comfort’ (sic). On doing a Google search, I find a page that sells ‘Pupa No Transfer Foundation – Ultra Comfort’, but there are still six shades to choose from. So which one am I supposed to choose? Findation.com did not provide me with this information. Aside from that, boy, is that foundation expensive!
For anyone trying to find a foundation shade to suit them, I recommend taking advantage of the free samples that many online mineral makeup companies offer. Yes, I’ve only ever seen mineral makeup companies offering free samples, so you’ll have to be ok with mineral makeup to begin with, but it’s really helpful. I myself use Signature Minerals; they have really generous free samples and also describe their shades really well, so from the 6 or so free samples that you get, you’ll definitely find one or two that match your skin.
I agree with Bren about getting free mineral samples from mineral makeup companies but I don’t like waiting for the parcel. What I like about findation.com is that I get to browse through a whole list of shades that each mainstream brand has.
