Elana44 inquires…I see quite a few cosmetics manufacturers lately who try to persuade me that their formulas are working on neuro-level and somehow influence muscle tension and what not to help fight wrinkles. Is it really so? Can a cream do it? For example Payot claims that their Ride Relax Regard eye cream is ? “real skin-contracting corrective care for expression lines in the eye contour area and crow’s feet.” Which of these ingredients are skin-contracting and can they really help fight wrinkles? How do you find the overall formula and would you invest in this eye cream?
The Right Brain responds:
Topical cosmetics can cause a skin tightening effect by using ingredients that form a film that contracts as it dries. So, we took a look at the ingredient list to spot the “film-formers.”
Ride Relax Regard Eye Cream Ingredients
WATER, CYCLOMETHICONE, GLYCERIN, DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, DIMETHICONE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, PEG-40 STEARATE, BETAINE, MANNITOL, PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) OIL,TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, PANTHENOL, NIACINAMIDE, SODIUM ASCORBYL PHOSPHATE, DIPOTASSIUM GLYCYRRHIZATE, SODIUM PCA, AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM (HORSE CHESTNUT) SEED EXTRACT, DEXTRIN, HYDROLYZED HIBISCUS ESCULENTUS EXTRACT, RETINYL PALMITATE, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, CERAMIDE-3, MAGNESIUM PCA,GLUTAMYLAMIDOETHYL INDOLE, ZINC PCA, ASCORBYL PALMITATE, TOCOPHEROL, MANGANESE PCA, ACETYL HEXAPEPTIDE-8, PENTAPEPTIDE-1, HYDROXYETHYL ACRYLATE/SODIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE COPOLYMER, POLYSORBATE 60, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, NYLON-12, SQUALANE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, CAPRYL GLYCOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN,ACRYLATES/C 10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, TROMETHAMINE, SILICA, HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE, DIMETHICONOL, GLYCERYL ACRYLATE/ACRYLIC ACID COPOLYMER, SORBITAN ISOSTEARATE, DISODIUM EDTA, CI 77891, CI 77491, MICA
There are at least three ingredients in this product that can help form a film on the skin:
- ACRYLATES/C 10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER
- GLYCERYL ACRYLATE/ACRYLIC ACID COPOLYMER
- HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE
- and perhaps to some extent the DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER
It’s likely that the combined effect of these ingredients helps tighten the skin and smooth out wrinkles so they are less apparent. Of course the effect only lasts as longs as the product is left on your face. Once you wash it off the film is gone. If this product is reasonably priced it seems like a good investment. But don’t over-spend on it just because it claims to be “real skin-contracting corrective skin care.”
