Post image for Beauty Science Quiz – December 9

Can you spot the TRUE story in this week’s Beauty Science Quiz? 4 of these facts are fake – guess the real beauty science story and leave a comment.  I’ll post the answers tomorrow.

Guess which story is TRUE

  1. Cigarette smoke is a “natural” cure for head lice.
  2. Temporary tattoos are a cute new way to deliver anti-acne ingredients.
  3. The pop group One Direction has a new fragrance based on the individual scent profiles of each of the boys in the band.
  4. Ultrasonic whirl pool baths provide anti-aging benefits for skin.
  5. A new scent is so complex that it overloads your nose, like the nasal equivalent of white noise.

Good luck!

Update: The answers are now posted in the comments below.

Hmmm, I don’t know! Maybe the last one: A new scent is so complex that it overloads your nose, like the nasal equivalent of white noise.

Number 5 is true?

I vote for #3 as the true one. It conjures up a gross image of boys’ scent profiles — sweat, feet, beer? But stranger things have happened, like a news story I just heard about a pizza perfume.

1: Nicotine probably kills head lice, but smoke? How would you get the smoke to stay where it’s needed–put the infested head inside a paper bag? And it would give the kid asthma. Even if it’s true, nobody is going to advocate blowing cigarette smoke all over a child’s head.

2: Temporary tattoos could work as a way to deliver medicine, but the result would be teenagers dozens of small tattoos on their faces. I don’t think very many teens or their parents will ever accept facial tattoos.

4: I’m doubtful of all anti-aging claims but I hope this one is true.

5: Would this smell drown out all other smells the way white noise drowns out all other noise? If so, I want to inhale it before I take out the compost.

I’m gonna go with the One Direction fragrance- I’ve seen other celebs do similar things, so why not?

And here are the answers to this week’s game:

1. Cigarette smoke is a “natural” cure for head lice.

False – but is true that birds who add cigarette butts to their nests have fewer parasites.

2. Temporary tattoos are a cute way to deliver anti-acne ingredients.

False, but there is a new medical sensor that attaches to the skin like a temporary tattoo. It’s shaped like a smiley face and helps doctors detect problems with metabolism.

3. The pop group One Direction has a new fragrance based on the individual scent profiles of each of the boys in the band.

False. They do have a new fragrance (Hey, why not, every other band has one…) but they did not contribute “individual scents,” thank God.

4. Ultrasonic whirl pool baths provide anti-aging benefits for skin.

False, but there is a new ultrasonic spinach jet that removes disease causing bacteria from leafy veggies.

5. A new scent is so complex that it overloads your nose, like the nasal equivalent of white noise.

True! It’s called “olfactory white” and it’s a mix of many different smells just like like white noise is a mix of different sound frequencies and white light is a mix of different wavelengths. This new scent is “so bland that it defies description.” Sounds like the latest J-Lo fragrance.
