There are two new oral care products in our bathroom this week: Listerine’s UltraClean Mouthwash and Whitening Gel.

The science

The most interesting thing about the mouthwash is its new “EVERFRESH™” technology that promises to give a “dentist clean feeling” that lasts for hours. I couldn’t find a detailed explanation of this technology but I’m guessing that the zinc chloride may be responsible for the lasting freshness effect since that’s not in the regular Listerine. Theoretically zinc can react with the odor causing sulfur molecules produced by bacteria in your mouth, thereby neutralizing the odor.

The product experience

I gotta tell you, these products made my mouth feel different than ANY other mouthwash/toothpaste I’ve ever tried. You can actually feel that you used them long after you’ve rinsed your mouth. If you’re tired of the same old products and are looking for something with a different mouthfeel, you might want to give these a try.

Even though the Beauty Brains don’t do traditional reviews, from time to time we like to share new products that we’re trying. We want you to know that we received free samples in exchange for a mention on our blog and that we’re not necessarily recommending you buy anything. We’re just sharing new product news; please do your own research before you buy.

I’d like to know more about how effective these are against plaque and gingivitis….after all, that’s the main point of such products! I’ve heard original Listerine is the best out there for gingivitis, and Colgate Total for plaque and gingivitis….any thoughts on how these new products might stack up?

Long gone are the days when the cheap drunk’s breath smelled of Listerine.

Hi,

In response to plaque queen; I asked my dentist the same thing and she said that a mouthwash with alcohol in it will cause plaque to stick to your teeth. She said alcohol-free mouthwashes are good though.

I think its important to mention this because a lot of people use a mouthwash after brushing and before they go to bed. This is when most decay happens because the mouth is drier/lack of acid-neutralising saliva. Its best to not aid this decay process.

This is purely what my dentist told me so it would be great to see if you can find any research into this.

Thanks Beauty Brains!
