Post image for Beauty Science Game – January 13

It’s time for another Beauty Science Game! Four of these beauty science stories are false. If you can guess the one that’s true, you win! (You don’t win anything but gosh it’s so much fun to play! ) Leave a comment with your guess! I’ll post the answer tomorrow.

  1. Experiments show that prolonged application of moisturizer to wet, pruney skin actually makes wrinkles worse.
  2. Most people want to grow more hair. But an Iranian man has a rare condition which causes hair in an unwanted place – his eyeball!
  3. Japan-based Shiseido has developed a new hand lotion that changes color when you come in contact with the influenza virus.
  4. The color of your perfume bottle influences how much you like the smell of the fragrance.
  5. Wondering what to do with your dead Christmas tree? Researchers have found that pine needle extract is a potent anti-bacterial for skin.

Good luck!

Here are the answers to this week’s game. Congrats to Raven and Bluecatbaby for guessing correctly! Thanks for playing everyone, better luck next week!

1. Experiments show that applying moisturizer to wet, pruney skin actually makes wrinkles worse.

False, but they have shown that water wrinkled fingers make objects easier to hold – which could be the evolutionary reason for pruney skin.

2. Most people want to grow more hair. But an Iranian man has a rare condition which causes hair in an unwanted place – his eyeball!

It’s disgusting, but true! It’s called a limbal dermoid tumor.

3. Japan-based Shiseido has developed a new hand lotion that changes color when you come in contact with the influenza virus.

False, but they did invent a new technology that shows how far and how deep cosmetic ingredients penetrate your skin.

4. The color of your perfume bottle influences how much you like the smell of the fragrance.

False (at least we haven’t seen anyone study this yet.) The true study showed that cup color influences the taste of hot chocolate.

5. Wondering what to do with your dead Christmas tree? Researchers have found that pine needle extract is a potent anti-bacterial for skin.

False but needles from the Douglas fir can be used to sterilize nano devices for medical applications.
