Vixanne  is vexed….Can I get IPL on pubic hair? I hate the scratchiness of shaving and yes I know to shave correctly I still hate it.

The Beauty Brains respond:

For those of you who may not be hip to modern hair removal devices, IPL (which stands for Intense Pulsed Light) is a relatively new way to  achieve permanent hair reduction (Not permanent removal! There’s a difference.)

The Pros and Cons of Pubic IPL

IPL works the same general way as a laser does- it produces a flash of light that penetrates skin and is absorbed by the melanin in your hair follicles. This absorption generates a burst of heat which destroys the cells in the follicle which are responsible for hair growth. So, until those cells regenerate, you remain relatively hairless.

Light treatments began as clinical procedures but since 2006 the FDA has approved several IPL devices for use at home. So if you’re on the shy side (and you have a few extra bucks to buy the device) you can IPL yourself at home.

The only potential issue is that IPL devices cause slight pain during treatment. It’s one thing to bear such pain when it’s on your upper lip or even in your armpits. But down around the pubic region? Hmmm. I’m not sure I’d sign up for that. (I wonder which is worse: learning how to remove pubic hair with IPL or learning how to color pubic hair?)

I have, and it’s the best thing you can do! for the pain, you just have to apply a topical anesthetic cream 2h before the treatment and voilà!

I tried laser hair removal on my under arms and bikini line a few years ago – soooo painful! I stick to waxing, not painless but I get much better results :)

The IPL systems are made weak so that you do not burn yourself. A few people find they work but many do not. It all depends on whether you have $300-500 to waste.

Question: IPL Hair Removal February 19, 2013 at 8:12 pm

Hey Beatriz,
I’ve heard if you take a couple Ibruprofen an hour before the IPL treatments, that helps to “take the edge off” the pain.
Ever try that?
