EyeDoll Chatter (get it?) is a new interactive line of mineral makeup for kids that let’s them mix and match colors and flavors to create their very own brightly colored eyeshadows, deliciously flavorful lip glosses and more. Kids can then share their creations via EyeDoll Chatter’s free iPhone App.

We were fortunate enough to try a sample of “My Besties Love Pink” eyeshadow kit and the “Hello Kissy” lip gloss kit. The flavor and color combinations are delightful! But don’t take our word for it here is what our 10 year old evaluator had to say: “The root beer lips stuff tasted really delicious, the eye stuff was all glittery and I like the magnets and flowery stuff on the box. It just looks cool.” So there you have, from an expert!

So cute. :D
I like that products like this exist. It’s easy for a kid to think lipgloss and make up is “cool,” but I think it’s more important to get them involved with the creation of products. It’s a while before they understand the chemistry, but as long as the understand the bare basics I think it helps with their creativity and understanding of science.

I watched some of the tutorials on the Eyedoll Chatter website and it deflated quite a bit of my enthusiasm. These kits are more about layering products than creating. Each kit comes with 3 colors and three scents of which the tutorial showed picking one scent and using it under or over one color. The eyeshadow set was basically 3 shades to create a whole eye look. Nothing to impressive with just layering a scent under a color. I do that myself with my Mocha flavored lipgloss from B&BWs and a lipstick.

I was hoping a much more scientific make up kit for girls, if it is even possible to do so safely.

When I was 10 in the early to mid 80′s, I had this Mix Your Own Makeup kit, like a pink chemistry set for girls. It had little beakers, tubes, funnels, and small pots & bottles in which to put your cosmetic creations. It came with the most basic stuff, like perfume bases, already pre-mixed, but there were still specific mixing instructions to follow as not everything was mixed together. You couldn’t just add color and call it done. The cream eye shadow and the lip gloss started off with the same base, but the end result depended on how much of what additives you put in.

It was ultimately my choice as to how much of the scent or color, and which combinations of scent and color to put in. I made gloopy cream eye shadows in baby blue and light green, some lip gloss that looked better in the pot than it did on me, some cologne that wreaked to high heaven, and some really ugly pink peel-off nail polish, but I was proud of it because I had made it and I had fun doing it. I don’t remember what the kit was actually called for the life of me.

Does anyone else remember this kit? Did anyone else have this? I’m disappointed that I can’t find anything like it these days. I have a couple of adopted nieces that I’d love to give something like this to, but all I can find are kits where all you have do is mix in glitter or mica powder and the eye shadow/lip gloss/nail polish is done. =(

@Bridget: Check out this post: http://thebeautybrains.com/2009/11/30/top-10-beauty-science-toys/
We found several toys that you might like for your nieces. And if you’d be so kind as to purchase them through our links in the post we get a teensy-weensy bit of commission. Thanks!

Pft… gendered nonsense. I had a normal chemistry kit when I was little and grew crystals and made reactions and all that other stuff. Much more interesting than making eyeshadow I think! :)

I am not to thrilled about this! Do we want kids playing with this? Even if it is mineral makeup.

This kit may be misunderstood—-very high end –not for a young girl to play with as a toy—-savvy way with the idea of the apps…very cool and a little too sophsiticated for a 10 yr old — their aim is probably more for 12-15— my 16 yr old bought a kit in Atlanta and loved it . !!!! kind of a boutique product—great box as well but NOT for a 10 yr. old…..Great box–scents are light and girly not trashy…..The apps set it apart from anything else……
