Continuing our look at the top selling beauty products on Amazon.com…
This week the #1 best selling beauty product on Amazon.com is Patene’s Nature Fusion Conditioner. How natural is it really? Let’s look at the label!
Pantene Nature Fusion Conditioner Ingredients
Water
Solvent/carrier for all the other ingredients.
Stearyl Alcohol
Part of the “backbone” of the formula that makes the product creamy and gives it a cushiony feel.
Cyclopentasiloxane
A primary conditioner that gives great wet slip.
Cetyl Alcohol
Another “backbone” that makes the formula creamy.
Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine
The other “workhorse” in the formula. Provides great lubricity and shine.
Cassia Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
The true “natural” ingredient in the formula. It’s a plant derived conditioner that is chemically modified to stick to hair.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract
Natural goodies that sound good but don’t do anything from a rinse off conditioner.
Panthenol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether
The “namesake” ingredients for Pantene.
Citric Acid
pH control agent.
Dimethicone
Another conditioning agent that give shine and smoothness.
Glutamic Acid
An amino acid that neutralizes the Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine.
Benzyl Alcohol
Helps the preservative system.
Fragrance
A blend of perfume oils to make it smell good.
EDTA, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone

Thanks to you, beautybrains, I am now the weirdo who spends half an hour actually reading the labels and comparing them. It’s good fun. I was wondering if you could explain to me what you mean by ‘Glutamic Acid
neutralizes the Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine’. Do you mean that it cancels out the beneficial effect of the Behenamydopropyl Dimethylamine?
Thanks from Belgium
!
@Cri: If we’ve helped you become a weirdo who reads labels then our mission is succeeding!
What I meant was this: We have seen formulations where amino acids (like glutamic) will interact with amines like (Behenamydopropyl Dimethylamine) to form a salt that has excellent hair conditioning properties. It doesn’t cancel it out – it makes it work even better!

Thank you, now all I need to do is learn to pronounce this fluently and give my sister a right scare next time we’re shopping for conditioner together!
That would be funny lol
Hi there! Thank you for the post on this conditioner, and all of the information listed… Unfortunately companies often use “frangrance” under the ingredients lists for cosmetics and beauty products for things which they wish to not disclose. The FDA does not require companies to fully disclose what “fragrance” contains (even if ‘fragrance’ means harsh synthetics or preservatives).
I just wanted to mention this as a warning! Please do not see this and think it only means vanilla extracts. This product may very well be natural and safe, but since the label is using the term fragrance which is an umbrella term for many harmful and nasty substances – be wary!
