Take a look at this “No More Flakes” dandruff shampoo we found in a local dollar store. Only $1.25 for a 15 ounce bottle. What a deal, eh?

But wait a minute…If this is a dandruff shampoo (which is an Over the Counter drug) it should list the active ingredient, drug warnings, expiration date, etc. Do you see ANY of that on the back label?
And here’s a closer look at the front label:

So what’s up with this product? Is it a dandruff shampoo that’s just labeled wrong? Or is it really a dandruff shampoo at all? If not, how can it talk about “flakes?”
Here’s a challenge for all you Beauty Brainiacs out there – leave a comment if you can figure out the trick to this product. We’ll post the answer in the comments section in a couple of days. Good luck!

The “trick” is that they advertise it as “rinse away flakes” which looking at the ingredients this is a generic shampoo and like any other shampoo when you wash your hair you will rinse some of the dandruff out but unlike something with OTC drugs in it like head and shoulders will not help treat the cause of dandruff in any way.
next to the fact it will be coloured green and rinse everything off your head
i see one unknown to me ingredient.. hydantoin. so thats what i looked up and found it is a drug..
“Hydantoin anticonvulsants are structurally related to barbiturates”
Rozy nailed it. I will admit that it is one of the slicker and dishonest labesl I have ever seen.
They are purposely avoiding making dandruff claims that would tilt the over to an OTC. The cleansing claim could be ascribed to any shampoo, but they imply that it is unique.
I think Marjo nailed it on how they could advertise it as something classified as a drug. Also of course, on how it works – no hair, maybe less dandruff, and that lovely green look – “next to the fact it will be coloured green and rinse everything off your head” is a buy this now cue for me XD Also the salt, that’s a big new thing.
There is no “Drug” ingredients in this shampoo…pretty much cheap generic ingredients…but the weasel words “Rinse away loose flakes”…could be said for any shampoo…or even water! Love you guys, one of the best beauty blogs!!!
I believe they spelled “laureth” incorrectly, they spelled it “lareth”. I think Rozy is right: they’re just saying this product can RINSE away dandruff that’s already loose. But I don’t think they can honestly say this is for “dry scalp” because there’s a couple surfactants in it and no silicone or anything that will moisturize a scalp.
“Or is it really a dandruff shampoo at all?”
Nah, it’s most probably just generic shampoo. And like Beauty Cat stated, they misspelled “Laureth”. I’d think twice about quality assurance. I doubt if the manufacturers know what’s exactly in it.
I vote run away from it as soon as you see it.
I tend to avoid dollar store anything for toiletries, makeup, food.. even in general, I don’t go in.
They aren’t to be trusted, especially with the recent (alarming) reports of what China has been doing to lower the cost of its products in the past years.
The smell when you enter, just makes you want to throw up. I’d be suspicious of what chemicals they’re using to process and make their items to make it all smell SO BAD.
In regards to that shampoo, I wouldn’t even be sure they used SLS in there. Could just be glue for all we know.
Hydantoin? Whats next prozac lotion? Maybe that is a typo too? hmmm
Ugh- I never ever buy beauty products of any kind at the dollar store. It all looks pretty scary from the separated liquids to the packaging I haven’t seen in a few years.
No typo there, the ingredient listed is “DMDM Hydantoin” which is a preservative.
Hydantoin on its own is not a drug, but many of its derivatives can be.
Congrats to everyone who caught that this is just a regular shampoo that IMPLIES it’s a dandruff shampoo by saying it “rinses away loose flakes.” Even water will do that! Those tricky bastards, trying to get you to part with your hard earned $1.25.
Kudos to Rozy, Mark, Joshua, The Beauty Cat, and Megan!

erm..i buy extra virgin olive oil from the dollar store..am i getting duped..because at first i was skeptical but the ingredients say that its just 100 percent extra virgin olive oil
