This hemp-related product is one of the top sellers on Amazon.com this week. Let’s look at the label to see why it’s so “high” on the best sellers list.
Hempz Original Herbal Body Moisturizer Ingredients
Water
Moisturizer and solvent for the other ingredients.
Propylene Glycol
A humectant that helps hold moisture to skin.
Isopropyl Palmitate
An emollient that makes skin feel smooth
Stearic Acid
A fatty acid that is neutalized with a base (see below) to form the creamy “backbone” of the lotion.
Sorbitan Palmitate
An emulsifier that helps keep all the ingredients mixed together.
Buytrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)
A natural moisturizer.
Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate
The primary emulsifiers that hold the lotion together.
Cetyl Alcohol
Another fatty material that gives the lotion its body.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder
Aloe can help moisturize skin when used at high enough levels.
Triethanolamine
A high pH base that reacts with the stearic acid.
Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract
Herbal extracts that look good on the label but don’t really do anything.
Glycerin
A humectant that can help bind water to skin.
Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Symphytum Officinale Leaf Extract, Althea Officinalis Root Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract
More extracts.
Dimethicone
Skin protectant that is probably used to too low of a level based on its location on the ingredient list.
Polysorbate-40
Another emulsifier.
Notice anything missing? Like maybe a preservative system or a fragrance? That’s because Amazon.com doesn’t do a very good job with ingredient lists. According to Ulta.com here are the missing ingredients:
Nylon-12, Dimethicone, Fragrance/Parfum, henoxyethanol, Polysorbate 40, Carbomer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium EDTA, Methylisothiazolinone, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Benzyl Salicylate, Amyl Cinnamal, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Eugenol, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Methyl 2-Octynoate, Ascorbic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate.

Certainly the label draws my attention.
It seems that anything to to with hemp is really popular but is it justified?
Being an amazon top seller convinces me that many have tried and tested this product before. I like the organic compound.
Cool product! I’ve beed using this for a couple of weeks and its great!
Must give this to my dad as a hint hint to cut down on the pot.
So it sounds like this product relies on Propylene Glycol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Shea Butter and Glycerin to provide any actual benefits. The rest of the ingredients appear to be binders or emulsifiers or marketing gimmicks. The label says “enriched with hemp seed oil” but I’m not seeing it (or perhaps just not recognizing it) on the ingredients list. So this sounds no better than any other average moisturizer. Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it more effective than other, cheaper products. Put the word “organic” on the label and add some “herbal extracts” and people will buy it, whether those things make any difference at all.
I would prefer any Olay quench lotion than this.
PD: Sarah please save some hemp cookies for me.
Feels more like they’re using “hemp” as a marketing ploy rather than being actually in the product. I’d stick with my Olay for now.
I dont see the hemp either but I should look the sciency extract names to see what they really are.
My friend have been using it and she says it is good. I am fan of Olay, and my skin a bit fussy about change, so never try. But might give it a try just of curiosity.
Hemp oil should be on the ingredient list on the product as “Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil”. It’s on the ingredient list at Ulta.com the Brains must have just missed it, maybe they ate too many cookies from Sarah before posting…
Lol! Sarah eats those brownies as fast as she bakes them. Blame this one on Amazon which is where we got the ingredient list!
I think NoahJenda is right on. I looked at this and was not all that impressed. Like to see more reviews on Hempz. Sure to catch the eye of the hippie era though of which I grew up in.

Wow, I think I’ll try this out, since it’s a top seller in Amazon. I presume a lot of people have tried this already and they feel satisfied with its effect. So, I’m going to give it a try. Anyway, I also like the ingredients of this product, moisturizer, emulsifier, skin protectant and etc.
I’ve never purchased the Hempz lotion but I am frequently given it for Christmas. I absolutely love it and I’ll tell you why. It doesn’t feel icky on skin and absorbs really well, it’s super light weight. I think that’s probably why people keep buying it, I guess the people over at Hempz just figured out a good how to put together an nice elegant formula? I don’t know I’m not a beauty brains :p
