Oxidised vitamin C serum - dangerous or just useless?

Hi there! I've just joined the site and I love that it's so scientifically accurate :x

I have a question about vitamin C serums. It's generally known that if you're mixing your own serum with ascorbic acid, it isn't going to stay potent for long because it gets oxidised. So I was reading on various beauty blogs that this oxidised vitamin C will not only do no good, it can actually HARM your skin. Apparently the dehydroascorbic acid "creates free radicals". I've been searching and searching and I can't find any scientific back up for this, it's just repeated by lots of serum reviewers!

Another thing I was wondering was, how long does it take vitamin C to fully oxidise and become dehydroascorbic acid? Because in all my googling I came across people asking how they could make their own DHA, and the answers were a lot more complicated than just "leave vitamin C lying around getting air to it"!

Also, am I right in thinking that it's best to use distilled water for the mix because that has less oxygen in it than plain old tap water, or is there a other reason? I've also been told that mixing it with a metal spoon oxidises it...

Sorry for sooooo many questions! I just want to make sure I won't be harming my skin!

After that I was so offended I am never going to buy one of their products ever. It is also annoying I have not gotten full use out of a lot of their products because they are not preserved properly.
To me this just sounds like a marketing fad, like mineral powder was a few years ago. The idea that a product can do everything in one step sounds nice in theory, but probably isn't realistic in practice. For one thing, I do not wear the same amount of makeup as I do sunscreen or moisturizer. So if I'm only putting on enough to even out my skin, I won't be putting on enough to moisturize or protect my skin. But if I apply more, it would look and feel way too heavy. This is just a supposition, but I'm guessing these products are, at best, able to do one or two things well. Unfortunately my go-to product has been discontinued and replaced with a BB cream. I hoped it was just their old stuff repackaged, but it comes in fewer shades and the coverage and staying power isn't as good. It just seems to try and do too many things and fails at all of them. So what's the consensus? Here's the ingredient list for the BB cream that replaced my beloved tinted moisturizer:

Active Ingredients: 5% Titanium Dioxide , 5% zinc oxide.

Other Ingredients: Aqua, cyclopentasiloxane, PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone, octyldodecyl neopentanoate, glycerin, dimethicone, aluminum hydroxide, stearic acid, triethoxycaprylylsilane, calcium sodium phosphosilicate, saccharum offcinarum (sugar cane) extract, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, citrus medica limonum (lemon) fruit extract, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) fruit extract, camellia oleifera leaf extract, panax ginseng root extract, ginkgo biloba root extract, anthemis nobilis leaf extract, kaolin, phytantriol, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, retinyl palmitate, tocopheryl acetate, tocopherol, tretrahexyldecyl ascorbate, boron nitride, palmitic acid, dextrin palmitate, sodium hyaluronate, sodium chloride, sodium dehydroacetate, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, hexylene glycol. (+/-): Iron oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), mica.

I was reading a blog post on here where someone asked you if toner was important and you mentioned that it's not important in terms of returning the skin back to a healthy pH because the skin will naturally restore its pH after a few hours. So I'm wondering how important is the level of pH of shampoo, conditioner, face wash, moisturizer, etc? Does shampoo, conditioner, face wash even matter if we're rinsing it all off anyway? I've heard that the perfect pH for hair, skin and nails is 4.5-5.5 but on your blog you stated the skin will naturally restore to 4-4.5. Does that 1.5 difference even matter? I've been testing the pH of all my products and I'm finding that every shampoo/conditioner is not below 5.5 but not higher than 7-7.5. Is it okay to use these even though it's not in the 4-5.5 range? I would assume using a product with a pH of 14 would not be wise, but is it advised to use a product with a pH anywhere from 0-7? 8? How important is this pH business? Thanks so much, Beauty Brains! Your answers are always appreciated!!!

As a feminist and also someone who respects science I was very disappointed to find an article on a site I normally enjoy called Everyday Feminism linking to CFSC and using fear mongering tactics seen often in the mass media. I find this worse because turning this into a race and feminist issues is taking away from all the social issues feminists should be putting energy into in my opinion. I find it extremely problematic but honestly I have come to expect little from popculture feminism which is a slightly more tolerable regurgitation of mainstream media and with a sickening fascination with celebrities and Hollywood. Anyways here's the article: http://everydayfeminism.com/2013/02/health-impact-of-toxic-chemicals-in-communities-of-color/
and here is something from the CFSC that talks specifically about black women and how the cosmetic industry is trying to harm them the most: http://www.bwwla.com/images/publications/NaturallyHealthyHair.pdf

*long sigh* I expect much more...

Pantene's new product line from the Expert collection, Age Defy, promises to make aging, thin hair appear thicker (they wisely do not promise the growth of new hair). The" Advanced Thickening Treatment" product from this line should be applied daily , and left on the hair, with results appearing within 14 days (thin hair appearing thicker). Its first ingredients, in order, are: DENATURATED ALCOHOL, water, Niacinamide, PEG/PPG-20/23 dimethicone, etc.
My question: wouldn't the denaturated alcohol damage hair, and only make it appear thicker because of the damage? I lighten my very fine, aging hair, and am afraid this product would further damage it, causing breakage.

What are your thoughts, Beauty Brains?

Thank you for your daily bits of wisdom!
