Hello. Newbie here. Just stumbled upon your little site here and really like it. I've already learned something today!: I will microwave my baby's face flannel instead of washing, as this will kill 99.99% of bugs!

But now I want to pick your brains.

I have very old hands, and they've been old for years. Both my sister and I have it, so we recognise that their lined appearance is genetic, but aside from that my hands are very dry. We got a water softener in the house recently principally to sort out my child's eczema, but it feels lovely for the adults too. However, I thought this would really help my hands and if anything they're drier than ever.

I'm a handcream nut, I'm forever searching for the holy grail. I've tried the usuals:

Cocoa butter
Neutraogena (norweigian fisherman formula)
Aveda Hand Therapy
Vaseline intensive care

I use rubber gloves to wash up/clean in.

Any suggestions for improvement, gratefully received.
Firstly I would like to say that I LOVE your website! So informative yet entertaining.
I would like to know why if I don't wash my hair for a few days and it subsequently becomes greasy at the roots, my scalp becomes flaky (like oily flakes). Is this dandruff or does dandruff necessarily have to be of the dry sort of flakes?
Warm regards,
Most of my acne, other than the few puss-filled ones, are mainly the hard under the skin ones and many white heads. I noticed recently that I now have scars - the ones were they sink into the skin and shaped like a jagged line. What ingredients should I use to help reduce the sunken skin area?

Theoretically, glycolic acid should clean up and break down excess skin cells and help circulation, which would than increase collagen, but would that help me reduce those scars? HELP! I want clear skin and to wear minimal makeup.

I have recently changed my hairstyle and have been using my hairdryer a lot more to get my hair straight. My hair is fine, with some natural waviness/cowlicks, so I straighten it every second day using a round brush and hairdryer. In the last few weeks, I have noticed that my hair won't seem to stay straight no matter how long I dry it for, or how hot the hairdryer is set. My hair goes frizzy and springs into waves about 20 minutes after I've finished styling. I haven't changed any of the products I use, so I'm wondering if I've caused heat damage to my hair, and whether this is responsible for increased tendency to frizz. Or perhaps it's just a change in the weather? Does heat damage make hair to harder to control?

I stumbled upon your website as I was doing some research for a lash extension business I was thinking of setting up. After reading some of the comments on this and other websites, I'm not so sure.

What I was then wondering, is what beauty service people would want a home? I'm trying to come up with an idea that will allow me to work flexibly as I've got a little boy and now expecting another child - not here for ages, mind. However, I need to get some training organised if I want to take this further. My lash extension was my big idea. But as I've said I now have doubts. What about LVL from Nouveau Lashes; it uses new perming technology to shape eyelashes to allow them to appear longer. Alleviating the need for mascara or if adding mascara creating an ultra-glam look.

I know this all seems lash-centric but I am interested in any ideas that allow me to specialise in the something that appeals, is easily transportable. My friend who is a trained beautician recommended learning threading as well.

Anyway, any help would be most appreicated.

I read on this blog that if I want a retinol product that whould be potent enough to do anything, that i needed to see a dermatologist. However, when I started researching various prescription retinol products (like renova), the retionol concentrations were actually less than that claimed by this product. Is there a difference between these forms of retinol? (like, does the processing make them more potent in some other way?) Is Skinceuticals just mis-representing their product? I am curious to know exactly what long term Urea use will do to my face.I use my 20% urea on my face every night and have been doing so for about three months.
I have noticed a difference in my worry lines and the fine lines around my eyes.My questions are;what will this do to the skin on my face in the long term?is it safe to use around my eyes?Is there hormones in it?(i am aware of where it may be derived from, but how would I know if its synthetic?)
If I couple this with glycerin(the label says BP,so I imagine its a by product of something,I know its not vegetable derived)is it dangerous?am I playng mad scientist with the skin on my face?
It feels and looks so good, the pores are finer, lines plumped out but I need to know if I will eventually glow in the dark or thin my skin out beyong repair ?thanks

I began plucking my eyebrows as a young teenager (around 13), and over the years I made them thinner and thinner. I'm 22 now, and I've slowly realized that they look ridiculous. I've been letting them grow in now for 7 weeks and honestly have not plucked at all in that time (and I've been looking pretty...shaggy). There are two spots in each brow that are not growing back well--the "front" above the tear duct of the eye (which was also what I remember that I started plucking first). Those patches basically look like a bunch of random hairs with lots of space around them!
I've heard that sometimes over plucked eyebrow hair will never grow back because the follicle has been damaged. Is this true? Or should I just give it more time? I feel like I've scarred myself for life!
I like reading the blog and received an email asking for more questions, so instead of working on my grad school projects, I decided to ask beauty questions.

When I was in junior high school, I had an Indian friend who liked to use Fair and Lovely cream.
I'm confused by some of the statements that Emerge Skincare makes on their website.

"Effective long term regulation and control of sebum, based on 5-alpha reductase inhibition. "
"The new ingredient of Seb-Regu gets your skin Auto-protection. It controls hyperactivity in sebaceous glands to prevent overproduction of sebum and allows the skin to quickly absorb moisture. It keeps the skin feeling trouble-free, pleasant and healthy."

Seb-Regu? Did they just make that up? The ingredients list is as follows:
Water (Aqua), Glyceryl Stearate, Behenyl Alcohol, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lecithin, Lauryl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Isohexadecane, Glycerin, Argania Spinosa Kernel Extract, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, Xanthan gum, Myristyl, Myristate, Chamomile Extract, DMDM Hydantoin (and) Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Triethanolamine.

Help, please! Will this actually reduce the oil production of my skin?

This hair straightening system, unlike the Brazilian Keratin Straightening, does not contain formaldehyde according to the manufacturer. However, it does contain aldehydes. Are aldehydes as noxious to the resperatory system and hair follicles as formaldehyde? I have had two Coppola treatments and loved the results however about eight months after my last treatment I noticed that the hair in my hairline only grows to about 3-4 inches. I don't know if this a coincidence or if I suffered follicular damage. I am in good health and have not suffered hair loss. Any insight would be appreciated.

I love John Frieda products normally. They are very reasonably priced and seem to be very well suited to me hair. Now when I saw this product however, I was stumped. Can a drugstore (non-professional) shampoo really tone your hair from brassy to a better shade of blond?

removing deodorant at the end of the day

Short of scrubbing, how can you remove deodorant from your underarms at the end of the day? I've heard of this one product, Clarsskin, that claims to penetrate the residue left behind to clean it off. Here's what their website says:

"Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser contains a unique patent pending combination of an effective chelating agent with special agents. This complex mixture is specifically designed to remove antiperspirant deodorant residue, efficiently and mildly. So what’s so special about chelating agents? Chelating agents have the capability of penetrating the residue left behind by antiperspirant deodorants -- including the metallic salts they are made of! They do one thing and do it well! Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser is particularly effective with ingredients that are unusually mild but contain no sulfates, paraben and DEA."
http://www.clarsskin.com/default.html

Of course since it's "patent pending" they don't list the ingredients. Is there anything out there that could help to get rid of deodorant? Does it even clog pores? I've never really experienced any breakouts there. although I am prone to ingrowns (but that's hair-related, not skin).

I just saw an ad for Lancome's new product Genifique. It claims it "boosts the activity of genes" (in vitro, according to the small print) and to "stimulate the activity of youth proteins". I'm really surprised about the straight-forward advertising - the claims seem to be a bit too... well, scary, actually, to be true, but the company doesn't seems to fear accusations of false advertising. So, what's the deal here?
