I began plucking my eyebrows as a young teenager (around 13), and over the years I made them thinner and thinner. I'm 22 now, and I've slowly realized that they look ridiculous. I've been letting them grow in now for 7 weeks and honestly have not plucked at all in that time (and I've been looking pretty...shaggy). There are two spots in each brow that are not growing back well--the "front" above the tear duct of the eye (which was also what I remember that I started plucking first). Those patches basically look like a bunch of random hairs with lots of space around them!
I've heard that sometimes over plucked eyebrow hair will never grow back because the follicle has been damaged. Is this true? Or should I just give it more time? I feel like I've scarred myself for life!

Hi BB,

I've been trying to find a product that will help make my nose a normal color. For years, it's been bright red! It's a little embarrassing, especially since everyone constantly asks me if I have a cold when I don't! I've been using Olay Targeted Tone Enhancer and Neutrogena Visibly Even moisturizer with SPF 30 and I'm not sure that they're working. The combination of the two seem to be working a little on my blotchy cheeks, but nothing has affected my nose. Am I just wasting my money? Is there something short of a chemical peel that will work?

Hi,
I like reading the blog and received an email asking for more questions, so instead of working on my grad school projects, I decided to ask beauty questions.

When I was in junior high school, I had an Indian friend who liked to use Fair and Lovely cream. Now that I am in my thirties, I have noticed small ages spots on my cheeck and was wondering if fair and lovely would actually lighten these marks. Some of the ingredients look like suncreen ingredients but is it true that vitamin B3 affects skin color?

I found the ingredient list on this website: http://www.spicesofindia.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww.spicesofindia.co.uk%2facatalog%2fHealth-and-Beauty-Items-11-20.html&WD=fair%20lovely&SHOP=%20&PN=Fair-and-Lovely-Fairness-Lotion.html%23aHBE090#aHBE090
"Effective long term regulation and control of sebum, based on 5-alpha reductase inhibition. "
"The new ingredient of Seb-Regu gets your skin Auto-protection. It controls hyperactivity in sebaceous glands to prevent overproduction of sebum and allows the skin to quickly absorb moisture. It keeps the skin feeling trouble-free, pleasant and healthy."

Seb-Regu? Did they just make that up? The ingredients list is as follows:
Water (Aqua), Glyceryl Stearate, Behenyl Alcohol, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lecithin, Lauryl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Isohexadecane, Glycerin, Argania Spinosa Kernel Extract, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, Xanthan gum, Myristyl, Myristate, Chamomile Extract, DMDM Hydantoin (and) Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Triethanolamine.

Short of scrubbing, how can you remove deodorant from your underarms at the end of the day? I've heard of this one product, Clarsskin, that claims to penetrate the residue left behind to clean it off. Here's what their website says:

"Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser contains a unique patent pending combination of an effective chelating agent with special agents. This complex mixture is specifically designed to remove antiperspirant deodorant residue, efficiently and mildly. So what’s so special about chelating agents? Chelating agents have the capability of penetrating the residue left behind by antiperspirant deodorants -- including the metallic salts they are made of! They do one thing and do it well! Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser is particularly effective with ingredients that are unusually mild but contain no sulfates, paraben and DEA."
http://www.clarsskin.com/default.html

Of course since it's "patent pending" they don't list the ingredients. Is there anything out there that could help to get rid of deodorant? Does it even clog pores? I've never really experienced any breakouts there. although I am prone to ingrowns (but that's hair-related, not skin).

The main ingredient is 'Cocoa butter' with 'propylene glycol' and 'avocado' listed later. Is cocoa butter actually a good HAIR conditioner ( I was under the impression that only certain substances like coconut oil and olive oil actually penetrate hair, won't cocoa butter just slide down the drain?) or , is it the propylene glycol and the avocado that are the only worthwhile ingredients?

My hair seems soft and not oily...but then again I don't color it or use the hairdryer often so I wonder if I am deluding myself that its the conditioner thats keeping it soft!

Hi All,

Just came across this cleanser & moisturizer by Sebamed called "Clear Face".
The cleanser claims to kill bacteria from 1,00,000 to Zero in 5 minutes.
Is this good for Rosacea ?

http://www.sebamedusa.com/424.html

I purchased the moisturizer and feel its pretty good with just Aloe, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate etc:
I recently started reading Beauty brains, and came to know that many of
the chemicals in the beauty products we use might be harmful.
Does "Olay Total Effects" contains any such ingredients.

Beauty Brains, you sent out a Blog Recap on the 17th, but I can't read any of the items because every one I click ends up being a 404. Just one example: http://thebeautybrains.com/2009/04/09/are-super-fruits-good-for-your-skin/ I tried doing a search for them, but nothing comes up. Likewise, I checked the archive for the entire month of April, and they don't appear that way, either. Where the heck *are* these articles? There are some I'd love to check out! Thanks for a pointer.

How is argan oil comedogenic ?

Hi,

One of your articles here talk about argan oil being comedogenic because it contains acid oleic but in other hand if argan oil reduces sebum production, how could it make skin break out ?

Emu oil for example is hight in acid oleic (30 %) and yet people using it report non comedogenic effect.

How ' s that possible ?
Are you sure argan oil is really comedogenic or is it just an hypothesis ?

Sunscreen under brutal conditions

Ok, after endless hours of searching the internet I need real help. I have many sunscreen concerns.

I am a professional firefighter and I spend MANY hours in the sun either training or putting out fires. I dutifully apply a generous amount of (Neutrogena Waterproof SPF 85) sunblock daily to protect myself but reapplying after sweating, getting wet, or every two hours is just NOT an option. Now some say I may be doing more harm than good.

I also have heard of astaxanthin. Does it work? And to what degree?

Or if I'm stuck using a lotion that wears off , can you at least point me towards a brand that will withstand these conditions best and will give a truly matte finish? (Neutrogena says its matte but isn't.) Or any other better ideas?

By the way you guys ROCK! Thanks for your help.

Cheers to women in unexpected places :)
