Hi Beauty Brains,
This doesn't exactly have to do with cosmetic science, but I was wondering if perhaps one of you knew anyway, or knew of someone who did. (I don't know who else to ask; I'm doubtful that submitting a question to a beauty editor at a magazine would get an honest answer.) I've been wondering for years about the Mason Pearson hairbrush. I've read time and time again in magazines that this is the brush of choice for stylists and A-listers because it makes hair look fantastic. (It sounds practically magical.) I'm curious...is there any scientific reason to believe that this brush would really work better than others? Thanks.

I have dry skin constantly in spots on my face, my skin stays clear for the most part but I cant seem to get rid of my huge blackheads that are EVERYWHERE! So I am trying to find the perfect products.
I am looking for a moisturizer for dry skin that has spf and is non oily. A skin toner that doesnt have alcohol or witch hazel but it can have chamomile or rose water. I also heard vitamine E and Wheat Oil is great for dry skin..I also heard that I should STAY AWAY FROM: Cleansers formulated with Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide or Sulfur which dry-up oil and are intended for oily or blemish-prone skin.
from what I hear and have read ST. Ives and Alba seem to be the best products , but I am unsure can someone help me find the right products for me?

No one has been able to tell me why, what to do about it, etc. The ony thing I can come up with is my history with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) -- the disease itself or the meds I take for it. I am 54 years old. I was diagnosed with MS 11 years ago. I inject a daily injection of a medicine called Copaxone. Other then this info, I don't know why my fingernails no longer grow. Yes, I have taken the vitamin, Biotin, used Miracle Nails and other OTC remedies for it -- all to no avail. I hate not being able to pick up a straight pin or open a box of dishwashing detergent like Cascade without having to use a knife of tape.
Hi. I have very oily and acne-prone skin and my aesthecian recommended G.M. COLLIN Acne Complex or Carita Ideal Controle Powder Lotion. I've been using the GM Collin complex, which also claims to have antibacterial properties, for almost a year. However, it is very expensive and I've been thinking about switching to the Carita but it has alcohol and I'm afraid that might make my skin produce even more oil. I've also used OC8 before, which I found to make my face even oiler after a few hours. Do these products really work in controlling sebum? Are there cheaper alternatives (I heard magnesium of milk works really well)?

These are the ingredients for the GM Collin Complex
Ingredients: Rosa Centifolia Flower Water, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Flower Water, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Flower Water, Water, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, PEG-40 Castor Oil, Rubus Fructicosus (Blackberry) Leaf Water, Butylene Glycol, Citrus Limonium (Lemon) Peel Oil, Rosmarius Officinalis Oil, Cymbopogon Nardus (Citronella) Oil, Mentha Arvensis (Cornmint) Oil, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Potassium Sorbate, Salycilic Acid, Potassium Alum, Citric Acid, Yellow 5, Blue 1.

Carita Ideal Controle Podwder Lotion
Ingredients: Water (Alcohol), Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Potato Protein, Panthenol, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, Caprylyl Glycol, Kaolin, Benzophenone-4, Fragrance (Parfum), Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Lactic Acid, PEG-8, Bentonite, Carbomer, Propylene Glycol, Sorbitan Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Tocopheryl Acetate, Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid, Oleanolic Acid, Papain, Zinc Oxide (CI 77947), Green 3 (CI 42053), Methylparaben.

Aquanil Vs Cetaphil Cleanser

I don't really like Cetaphil cleanser as it dries up my psoriasis & clogs my pores. As far as my knowledge of surfactants go, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is as harsh as it gets.
I recently came across aquanil which seems to have improvised on the Cetaphil formula by replacing the lauryl with Laureth. After reading & researching extensively on Google, I found out that as far as sensitive skin goes; the laureth has a much lower potential for a skin allergy/reaction. Also, I personally can vouch against Propylene Glycol so aquanil scores 3 points over Cetaphil (No lauryl, No Propylene Glycol & No Parabens).

However, the question I'm asking is about something present in Aquanil called "Benzyl Alcohol". Is it safe to be used in a cleanser for sensitive skin? I even received an email response from Person & Covey that it is absolutely safe for sensitive skin. It is also found in Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion.

Since I got interested in beauty blogs I have noticed a tendency of recommending fashing face with soap/cleansers/cremes etc twice a day. I myself don't do that, i use toners as my main cleansing products and wash my face two or three times a week in the shower. I have combination skin with very oily T zone and use gentle aloe vera+tee tree exfoliating cream wash without sulfates in the shower. For toner I use no alcohol, no witch hazel products. For make-up remover I use milk. I have no great issue with my skin, just ocassional break outs, but I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong. I'm 22 by the way and wear make up 3-4 days a week and live in London, so polution is an issue.

My mom and I are huge fans of Olay’s Regenerist line; however, the products fairly pricey compared to most brands sold in
drugstores/major retailers. Some major retailers and drugstores (e.g. Walgreens) have created a generic of the Regenerist line (http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?id=prod4176806&CATID=100735&skuid=sku4175676&V=G&ec=frgl_528401&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku4175676).
This is the same for many popular skincare products like Cetaphil’s Daily Facial Cleanser.

The ingredients are essentially the same, excluding Olay’s star ingredient Niacinamide.

Some people are adamant that the original brand is superior to the generic because the cosmetic scientists working for brand name products
are more competent and knowledgeable. They say that two chefs could be given the same ingredients to bake a cake; however, the more
experienced chef would create better cake.

Are these generic brands produced by less experienced/competent cosmetic chemists? Do the tiny differences in the ingredients dramatically
affect the product? Is the original brand name product more expensive due to the costs of research?

I have been reading on Google scholar & all studies seem to conclude both Lactic Acid & Ammonium Lactate to be similar. Then why is Ammonium Lactate Lotion (12% Amlactin by Upsher Smith) so expensive? What is all the hype all about?

Aren't Lactic Acid, Ammonium Lactate & Salicylic acid all the same in the sense they all exfoliate & soften dry skin ?

What to do about water quality?

OK, here's some background...

I've been using the same shampoo, conditioner and styling products for a while now, and I was happy with them. But then I went to visit family for the holidays. I brought all my products with me, so they're the same as what I use at home, only my hair turned out so much better - softer, shinier, easier to manage. Since everything else was the same, I have to imagine the difference was the water. I never thought I lived in a hard water area and have never had my water tested.

So short of selling my house and moving, or installing a water softener system, any ideas to help me get the results I got at my mom's house? (She says it's a hint that I should move back closer to her. NO!!!)

Thanks in advance.

Big fan here. Recently, I went with a friend to an Origins boutique and had a hard time maintaining a straight face what with all the "...after you rinse it it, the antioxidants are activated to..." and "...it can't hurt you, it's organic and natural...". Thank goodness I read your blog! But, I can only find one review and lots of negative comments with it. Is it really that bad? Are all of their products irritating? And do antioxidants really open your pores to cleanse out the bad stuff as they say?

Don't Wash Your Face Right Away?

This is a suggestion that I heard from my friend again. She said that after one hot day under the sun (with sunblock of course), don't wash your face right away because it will create sun spot ( really?) to your face. The other suggestion is not to wash your face with any cleanser after going out on a hot day (like in summer maybe), but use toner instead. Wait till few hours or maybe the next day. She said that these come from her dermatologist.

It seems non sense to me. But I'm not an expert. Could somebody tell me it is possible?

I read this in a Salem News article here (http://www.salemnews.com/pulife/local_story_340001230.html?keyword=topstory). It seems very alarmist, What's the real scoop on diazolidinyl urea? I thought it was an excellent skin moisturizer.

"For example, an organically-certified body wash on my shelf turned out to contain diazolidinyl urea — a preservative which The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a World Health Organization body located in Lyon, France, classified as a "known human carcinogen."

Diazolidinyl urea also releases formaldehyde, a "probable" carcinogen as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."

I am about to switch my daily skin care regime to Arbonne. What are the comments about the product and how does everyone feel about them. They seem pure enough and the price is about comparable for the entire skin care line. I am specifically interested in the anti-aging NutriMinC RE line. Any thoughts or comments on Arbonne?
