Firstly, just let me say that I really enjoy your site and the witty comments flying between the lobes, good work!

Now, for my query. But first, a low down on my skin - I'm 36 and my sensitive skin is dry on the cheeks and somewhat oily on the t-zone. I have spent ridiculous amounts on 'chemically inclined' skincare such as the whole range of La Mer and gone mad on 'completely organic pure' stuff like Jurlique.

I am sick of spending money on stuff that doesn't do much other than empty my bank account.

With my sensitive combination skin moving towards mature skin, can you recommend specific products from a comprehensive drugstore brand of skin care for me to use? There's so much hype on skin care out there that I fear making an uninformed choice and causing my sensitive skin break out!
Thank you!

I've recently lost almost all hair in some parts of my eyebrows, thanks to seborrheic dermatitis and weak will power. For treatment of the seborrheic dermatitis, my dermatologist prescribed Verdeso foam, which is .05% desonide. He promised that it would clear the flakes and promote regrowth, as the flakes had caused major brow hair fallout. It failed on both accounts. He then gave me desonide cream, made by Perrigo, in the same concentration. It temporarily softens the flakes, but didn't show any positive effects on regrowth, or decrease the amount falling out. Distressed by the large barren spots where my eyebrows used to be, I consulted with my physician, who told me to massage in Neutrogena T-Gel or Nizoral shampoo. I first tried the T-Gel, which was so sappy that my "massaging it in" was basically rubbing the hairs out. Dismayed, I switched to the Nizoral two days ago, which in addition to promising to get rid of flakes (like every other product had), had rumors of speeding up growth. Again, I see no improvement. After each and every treatment with these products, the day after using I see a ton of huge new flakes. It seems as if the products exacerbate the flakiness, rather than helping it. Currently, I'm using the Nizoral daily, and the Perrigo cream once during the day and once before bed.

After that huge boring explanation, which I'll be thankful/surprised if anyone reads, my questions:

-Are the products supposed to bring out the flakes? Because really, I'm using them to get rid of the flakes/flakes noticeability, and they're just making it worse. Is this part of the process? I really have no idea how these shampoos are supposed to work...
-Is desonide supposed to possess any growth-related properties? It's only listed as a possible side-effect on the manufacturer's website, so if not I wonder why my trusted dermatologist would tell me it would help.
-Same as above for Nizoral.
-Does anyone have any experience with these products? I hate to be going by only what stranger's reviews tell me.
-Are there any fellow seborrheic dermatitis sufferers out there, and how do you deal with this condition?
-What are people's opinions of RapidLash? I've gotten some negative replies to my questions on products like it before, but am reluctant to give up, as in some parts of my brows I haven't seen any new growth in almost a month. And it's disturbing to see just skin where there was a thick, healthy eyebrow less than two months before, let me tell you!

Thanks so, soo much to anyone and everyone who answers! I know that this post is long and tedious, but I'm deeply bothered by losing at least four brow hairs a day, and will appreciate any contributions that I get!

I probably should've titled this post "Seborrheic Dermatitis". Darn.

Again, very very very grateful for any responses!

There has been a lot of talk about silicones in shampoo and conditioner on this site and many many others. My take on silicones ~ With some heavy cones, you need to use heavy-duty SLS (a clarifier) to remove them completely. Clarifying can really dry out your hair and putting more silicones in your hair will not make your hair healthier. It will just make your hair FEEL healthy and shiny. If you're gonna use silicones, prepare to clarify regularly as well as keep up deep conditioning treatments (Preferably silicone free). Now comes the opinion part that is controversial. imo, using silicones really does keep your hair from getting real moisture. For example, if you use heavy-duty cones and don't clarify, the next time you use a condish (even a silicone free condish) then the condish is not being fully absorbed and moisturizing your hair like it should. So your hair is not benefiting fully from moisture you put in your hair.

I can say from personal experience that using no silicones benefits my hair GREATLY. My hair is much healthier. I do use them on ocassion and they are necessary when heat styling but there are alternative water soluble/easily removed silicone heat protectants which are: V05 Miracle Mist and Tresemme Heat Tamer. I'm finding that LUSH products are working WONDERFULLY for me.

In the past I used to use John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette and I really liked it, provided alot of shine and smoothness, however it contains alot of silicones so I stopped using it.

Thoughts on all of the above? Is silicone free really better from a scientific standpoint???

So my questions are: does this stuff really work? if so, how does one know how much is needed for the product to actually work? meaning is there a recognized minimum concentration needed for the claims to be true. i know that with some ingredients in creams, if they are bellow a certain % of the product, you are wasting your money since there's not enough in there to do what the product claims it does....

I see Salicylic Acid as an ingredient in both shampoos and conditioners (both Goldwell and Redken-All Soft products have it in them-Goldwell Kerasilk conditioner and I think it is in Redken All Soft shampoo or All Soft Conditioners or both of the Redken products).
Wouldn't this be damaging to the hairstrands-especially bleached hairstrands? Why is it used in hair care when I thought it was for sloughing off dead skin cells.
I love my Redken products, but don't want to be using anything that would damage the hair.
Thank you for any info!
Specifically, if you have an ingredient, like emu oil, which has healing properties, does it retain those properties when it turns to soap? Also, do allergenic properties (say, in a nut-based oil) carry over into the finished product? Many thanks for your help!

I wonder what the Beauty Brains think of old-timey (The co. was started in 1889) wrinkle remedy Frownies. I haven't bought it, yet, but I am intrigued. They are sort of like band-aids that you put over your wrinkle-prone areas when you sleep. For your reference: http://www.frownies.com/products/frownies/

Hello Beauty Brains..
I'm happy to write you-I find the answers rather enlightening..Due to my skin "issues" I was always cleansing my face with soap-free products (they produced foam of cource). I was wondering what are the cleansing agents of soap-free products..(as far as I've seen, they do not use the likes of laureth sulfates).
thank you in advance..

One of the first lessons I learned in basic chemistry was a base and an acid neutralize one other. This thought popped into my head when I realized I was applying a 2% salicylic acid gel to my face then followed it with a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Am I making my acne medications cancel each other out?

Hey everyone,
I just found a great new weight loss cream (I can't find the post of the girl who asked about it). My stomach and thighs are already more toned and I can see my cellulite disappearing -- and I've only been using it for 3 weeks. Here's the website for it: www.tanthin.com.

A good finishing powder or primer?

I use a bronzer by NYC, applying it over my liquid foundation (L'Oreal's True Match Super-Blendable SPF 17).

The foundation gives me great coverage and with the bronzer over it, a beautiful finish. However, by the end of the day, or even after 5-6 hours, the bronzer looks bad - with streaks, patches, and an unsmooth finish. My foundation starts to show in random spots and the makeup overall looks dried out. The bronzer looks really splotchy.

Would using a good finishing powder or primer over my liquid foundation (before applying the bronzer) be the answer? If so, can anyone recommend one?
