Animal testing? Beauty Brains please help!

This question is mostly directed at the cosmetic chemists here but of course i welcome all comments/advice.
For the past year i have decided to go cruelty free. And i mean i was going hardcore, i took every piece of loreal, maybelline, guerlain, shiesheo, etc etc and gave it away to my friends and pledged to never buy an animal tested product again. However over the past year i have hit an impasse with this decision.
And not because i stopped caring, i am still very against animal testing for the use of cosmetics. I mean its makeup for Christ's sake its not necessary to hurt an animal in order to make a better mascara. My problem is getting down to the bottom of these companies. I email companies constantly and research on the internet to try and get answers. If you email any company 9/10 will tell you they do not test. And you either have to take their word for it (could they be lying) or be cynical and decode their words to find ingredients have been tested or testing has been outsourced to another company so said company can keep their name clean.
Then you go on the internet and information is divided some say a company does test and some say they do not.
For example it is widely accepted across the internet that NARS is not cruelty free, yet when i talked to a rep at Sephora she told me that while it's parent company Sheisido does test on animals, Francois Nars has kept all creative and executive control of the compnay, he is Vegan and very against animal testing, and never tests on animals and does not buy ingredients tested on animals and does not outsource, And she told me the common misconception with parent brands is that people think a parent brand supplies their companies with ingredients. While that may be true in some cases, in a case where an independent company was bought or sold, their business transactions can remain them same. (IE Nars does not get ingredients from Sheisedo, does not outsource testing to Sheisedo, but a percentage or profits does go to the parent compnay)
However if we were to go that route, Walmart is certainly not cruelty free, while Avalon Organics is. If i bought an Avalon Organics Shampoo, a percentage of the profit would go to WALMART for being a vendor. Yet Walmart has nothing to do with the product process of the company. Many companies work like this as well.
So my point? How the heck do i determine if a brand is "animal safe" or not? There are so many loopholes and contradictions, especially here on the internet where 99% of people have no proof or evidence of their claims. Who do i believe? I don't see PETA as a reliable source and many brands that are considered cruelty free don't sign up on THELEAPINGBUNNY because they simply do not want to fill out the paperwork of be affiliated which does not make the company a bad company. If you email a company do they have to tell you the truth?
I feel i can either say the heck with it and give up trying to find the truth or stop buying cosmetics all together.
I would love the opinion of someone in the cosmetic business or someone with some insight on this.
I would love to remain cruelty free and support something i believe in, but i feel like i will never know for sure.
Please help.

I saw this vending machine selling Pro-Activ products at the Century Mall in LA a few months ago. My first reaction was to laugh really loud, then to whip out my camera to take a picture. Unfortunately, the security guard came over and said that we weren't allowed to take pictures at the mall, so I snapped this one up secretly with my phone.

What do you guys think about purchasing skin care products via vending machines?
Combining all the beauty fashion with science! It is an amazing but intensive course! However, i have a placement year next year in my 3rd year and i was wondering if you know any companies that offer internships? I want to apply to Estee Lauder but i'm not quite sure how to?

Frequent readers of the Beauty Brains will often read us defending the big cosmetic companies. This has led some to even accuse us of being shills for "Big Cosmetic". Of course, this isn't true but it's an understandable accusation.
For the most part the biggest cosmetic companies (P&G, Unilever, L'Oreal, etc.) create the products that are best appreciated by the majority of people. They spend the most money in research and development, have innovation advantages, and do have the most cutting edge technologies.
Unfortunately, they're not above engaging in some shifty advertising practices. For example, P&G just got in trouble for an Olay ad in which they airbrushed the model's skin so she didn't look as wrinkley.
How discouraging. But it's a good lesson that to keep in mind. ALWAYS be skeptical of advertising no matter who it comes from!!

I ran across an Etsy makeup seller who's hawking a glow-in-the-dark eyeshadow. (I'm such a masochist... I like to look through Etsy MU to find all the ridiculous claims and improper labeling.) As far as I know, there's only one fluorescent/phosphorescent/luminescent (not sure which is the most accurate term here) substance that the FDA allows in makeup--zinc sulfide, which is what this lady's using--and it's not approved for use around the eye. So how does a consumer report a violation to the FDA? What usually happens in situations like this?

This sort of thing is why I don't buy a lot of personal care stuff from small companies. Either she's selling this stuff because she doesn't care about safety regulations or she's unaware of them. Either way, I don't want to put anything such a person makes around my eyes!

Distributed vs. Made by

Ok, I know (or I'm pretty sure I know) that when a cosmetic label says "distributed by," it means the company didn't actually produce the product, they just sell it. "Made/Created/Produced by" means they did. How do private labellers deal with this issue? If I own a cosmetics company and farm out production to someone else, but they use my specific, unique formula, would I then be distributing or making? What if I use a standard formula offered by the private labeller? I guess, in a nutshell, my question is at what point does the terminology change? Is it legally regulated, or is it more of a marketing or semantics thing?

Thanks again, Brains, for being my guide to the lipstick jungle!

But L'Oreal says:

What is Diversion?

If you don't know the answer to this question — you're not alone. Nine out of ten consumers do not know what diversion is. But you probably have witnessed it.

Diversion is when products are sold in "unauthorized" places. For example, all genuine L'Oréal Professionnel products are sold exclusively in salons. But you might come across a few bottles in your local supermarket, drugstore, online or at a discounter. Salon professional products you find outside of a salon are considered to be "diverted."
Why Diversion is Bad

Diverted products can be counterfeit, diluted formulas, or old, expired formulas that may not be safe to use. L'Oréal Professionnel states on all its advertising, "Genuine Products Guaranteed Only In Salons." This means if you buy our products in a supermarket, drugstore or any other outlet other than a salon, we cannot guarantee that it is an authentic L'Oréal Professionnel product that will perform as tested.
Are You in Danger?

You could be. Contaminated or counterfeit products could cause irritation or even infection.
Who is Diverting Products?

Products are diverted by unauthorized distributors and salons or their employees, plus other dishonest individuals who see profit in piracy.
