I thought I will start a thread about it, I never believed much on it
but I am going to try to stick to a couple (maybe that's a resolution right there):

-Use hand cream religiously, I am going to leave a big pot on my desk
- groom my brows, believe it or not I never do anything to them, I am surprised I do not look like a caveman
truth is I do not know what to do with them, maybe I should go get them done "professionally" (any ideas?)

And finally..
I am going to write and send out my papers... (this is my last year of PhD in theory)

I am going back to teach at the gym today, I bet it's going to be packed of new year's resolutions

I read an article on www.salon.com that described me to a T...and, yes, I know I am dysfunctional. It described how customer reviews factor into our buying choices. The case in point was buying something as SIMPLE as facial tissue from Amazon and being compelled to read the customer reviews before making such a MOMENTOUS decision. Frankly I thought I was the only perfectionist out there that was THIS CRAZY.

I can remember a time when doing comparison shopping used to be something you did only for big ticket items like appliances and cars but now it seems we not only have too many choices of products but too many opinions about those products, services, etc.

(I give thanks every day to THIS site for helping me with beauty products because I can TRUST forum members). However, it worries me that I STILL do spend an ridiculously long time in the skin care aisle at Target which means I am still am worrying too much.
Thanks, forum members, for listening. I probably need to get a life and not worry about such things like "Puffs" or "Kleenex".
But I am curious to know if any of you have any kitchen/food-related beauty tips! For example, after I crack open an egg, I will scrape out some of the egg white and dab it under my eyes. My mom said that helps to tighten the skin. I just figure I'd use all I can out of that little egg.

I've read people will actually use Crisco or oleo as intensive hand moisturizers! Sounds icky greasy to me.

And one thing I'm very interested to know are the potential uses of olive oil for beauty. People have already mentioned how they're good for soaking cuticles. What about using it in your hair as a conditioner? Anyone tried it before?

So the holidays are fast approaching and everyone's making out their wish lists. I'm making two, one that I'll give to my family and one that I keep to myself since I alway buy myself a present or two (hey! my birthday's in December so I have an excuse). I put the really frivolous, girly stuff that I'd be too embarrassed to ask my mother-in-law to get on the "me" list. I put more "practical", easier-to-buy stuff on the "them" list.

The "me" list is heavy with perfume this year. I'm thinking of going on line and ordering a sample of every perfume I've ever wanted to try. Or maybe I'll just buy myself a really nice bottle of perfume. Or maybe both. Or maybe I'll just hit every makeup counter in every store and buy all the eye shadows, glosses and lipsticks that I've been eyeing. Or maybe a really gorgeous pair of black pumps, which I actually need. The "them" list has lots of books, some of them are very expensive because their out-of-print, some sweaters, some accessories and lots of yarn. I realize it's not very exciting, but I love to knit.

So what's on your list? Am I the only one with two lists? What would you buy yourself if money were no object? Do you have the nerve to ask your spouse for something that will require him to shop at the makeup counter? (I don't. My husband would rather spend more money if it means he can order it on-line and believe me, I take advantage of this.)

I was sent the below in my e-mail. Interesting reading.
buenos dias,
Lynnette
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For Immediate Release
November 16, 2007
Jan Marini Skin Research, Inc. Responds to
FDA Seizure of Discontinued Eyelash Product
The Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) issued a press release today, Nov. 16, announcing the seizure of a discontinued product, Age Intervention Eyelash, which Jan Marini Skin Research, Inc. (“JMSR”) has not manufactured or marketed for more than one year.
The FDA asserts that it has safety concerns about JMSR’s discontinued product, but those concerns are not substantiated by any study or analysis that JMSR is aware of, and are certainly not substantiated by any study or analysis offered by the FDA. We are not aware of any instances where JMSR’s eyelash product has damaged any user’s vision or caused optic nerve damage, blindness, macular edema, or uveitis and the FDA has not informed JMSR of any. The FDA press release purporting to warn consumers about such risks has no factual support we know of.
The FDA’s glaring failure to take action against other eyelash products containing the same ingredient undermines its stated safety concerns. The FDA was notified months ago that several other companies have copied JMSR’s discontinued product and continue to market their competing products with “drug” claims for eyelash growth, but the FDA has taken no enforcement action to remove those products from the market.
JMSR has conducted numerous safety tests on both its original and reformulated products, far beyond those ordinarily required for a cosmetic product, and the test results showed that both products are safe. JMSR also conducted additional safety studies at the request of the regulators and the results of those studies also showed the products are safe.
The discontinued product was stored in JMSR’s warehouse since September 2006, when it was embargoed by the California Department of Health Services' Food and Drug Branch at the FDA’s request. JMSR offered to destroy the product voluntarily, but the FDA recently informed JMSR that it preferred to seize the product so that it could issue a press release announcing the seizure.
JMSR reformulated its eyelash product in late 2006 to eliminate the marketing claims and the ingredient questioned by the FDA. JMSR’s new Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner does not contain bimatoprost or any other prescription drug ingredient. A new ingredient was substituted to confer similar benefits and JMSR released its reformulated product in February 2007. JMSR’s current product has not been seized or embargoed.
JMSR has distributed Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner to tens of thousands of satisfied customers with only a few instances of reported minor irritation and no reports of lasting adverse side effects.
I love serendipity...
And I love Queen Helene Body Lotion. The way it keeps the moisture in, the smell...So when I saw a 2oz tub of QH Cocoa Butter Creme on sale I bought thinking it would be good for our desert trips in the medicine bag. It would be less likely to explode from extreme heat.
It sat around my bathroom for about a week and I decided to try it after a shower. WOOT! Holy crap is this stuff great. Tony the Tiger Grrreat! Every part of me got soft. Even the scaly-from-meds parts of my legs shrunk a tad. It just smooths everything.
I love it on my face too. Before bed I wet a washcloth with warm water, wipe the dirt off face and neck, and wipe on the creme. In the morning my face isn't tight. When I first put it on it's kind of greasy, but soon it all sinks in. I put my hair up and use a headband til it does.
Yesterday I found a 15 oz. tub in my local Rite Aid for $5.39. I'm very happy. At the price, and because I could actually find the damned thing in a store. Seems everything I use is being taken out of stores for newer, shinier products that don't work any better, and I have to get them online. Dammit.
Ingredients: Mineral Oil, Distilled Water, Beeswax, Paraffin, Sodium Borate, Cocoa Butter, Stearyl Alcohol, Lanolin, Fragrance, FD&C Yellow No5, FD&C Yellow No6, FD&C Red No40, D&C Red No33.
So if you're allergic to lanolin this is probably not a good choice. If you don't know, test it on the inside of your arm overnight. But I highly recommend this creme. It's cheap, and the ingredients are pretty basic. And whoa, they're less than 5 syllables long and you can actually pronounce them. Bonus!
Hi All,
I've seen several recommendations regrading this in the forum
and since I am in sort of an emergency, I am going to Hawaii in a month and do not want to look like a ghost
I am a reformed tanorexic, not used to seeing myself so pale, but I gave up my tanning habit,
since I know better and it is obviously one of the worst things you can do for your skin
however I refuse to be pale on the beach
so I'll appreciate any suggestions of any product that can deliver a natural looking tan with minimum streaking
and hopefully without staining clothes
I heard glow fussion is good, but their claims seem a little unrealistic
any thoughts?
thanks a lot!!
"My Super Cheap Ex-Boyfriend"
Edit: The following story was NOT written by me.
Before I start this post I’d like to tell all of you that I secured my exboyfriend’s permission to write this article about a month ago. He is an intelligent and capable guy, but he might be a little too penny-pinching for his own good. The first time I wrote a story about his tight-fisted behavior I didn’t tell him about it and entered it into Suave’s America’s Smartest Shopper Essay Contest under his name. It was a silly joke, but ironically the entry was selected as a finalist and he won $200 in cash and was invited to audition for a TV show on the Style Network about the longest yard sale. I had to let him cash the check, but in return he bought me a full tank of gas and dinner for my parents. All of that didn’t add up to $200, though, but I guess it is the thought that counts. I’ve forgotten what exactly I wrote in that story, but here are some possibilities.
1. He Lives at Home with His Parents And Doesn’t Pay Room or Board – This behavior is understandable if he were 16, but he is now 26 years old with a well paying full time job as a mid-level software engineer at a fairly large defense firm. He says that he serves as his parents’ marriage counselor, system administrator, and financial adviser so that he doesn’t have to pay his parents anything. Therefore, he has zero living expenses.
2. His Bus Pass is Free — This is a benefit from his employer. He has something called the “Ecopass” and he can take the bus and train for free in Santa Clara county. It would be a lot more convenient for him to drive to work, but he saves a lot of gas money by using his free bus pass. On the weekends he can just borrow his parents’ car and this way he has no automobile expenses.
3. We Only Went on Free or Almost Free Dates — Our best dates were the company parties, because all the food and refreshments were free. There were also a lot of free movie tickets that we won from sweepstakes. There was also a very cheap Cinelux theatre in Milpitas that sold $1.50 tickets on Tuesdays, and we went to that fairly often. The theatre has been closed for a couple years now, but it was possibly the cheapest theatre in the Bay Area while it stood. I didn’t really mind having cheap and free dates because I am pretty frugal myself, but I imagine a lot of other girls would have objected to all the dates being free or under five dollars.
4. He Ate 25 Cent Spaghetti Everyday – For as long as I knew him his dinner diet consisted almost entirely of 25 cent spaghetti and 79 cent spaghetti sauce. He was quite proud of it too, and said that he would only buy spaghetti when it’s 25 cents, and he would stock up whenever he sees it. Sometimes he also brought some porkchops that his dad made for him and added it to the spaghetti. Once I went to Longs Drugs with him to procure some of that cheap spaghetti and they ran out, and he said that his mom would usually ask for a raincheck in that situation and buy the spaghetti later. Lately I asked him if he were still eating the 25 cent spaghetti, and he said, “no, 25 cent spaghetti is hard to come by now, the best I can get is 50 cents”.
5. He Doesn’t Flush the Toilet to Save Water — He would usually do #1 in his toilet 4 to 5 times before flushing and by then his toilet usually looks like a yellow bubbling cauldron. When I asked him why he did that he said it’s to save water. That is quite a weird dichotomy in him because he is very clean about his other living spaces and picks up every piece of hair and trash. He also cleans himself up pretty well, but he just doesn’t like to flush because according to him it wastes water.
6. His Cheapness (or Maybe Greediness) Finally Foiled Him — Sometimes banks or credit card companies send you small checks of $15 or $20 and if you cash them you are enrolled in some credit monitoring system that charges a fee. Well, he cashed one of those and forgot to cancel the service, so he ended up with negative five dollars. He was pretty sad about that, but couldn’t do anything, but now he no longer falls prey to small free checks.
You’d never know that he was that parsimonious just by looking at him. He actually looks like a fine well groomed young man and he is currently attending Stanford for his masters and works at the same time because his company is picking up his education tab. Looking back, I am pretty glad that I broke up with him because if I married him I would have had no wedding and right now I would probably be living with his parents and eating 50 cent spaghetti. Saving money is generally a good thing, but too much of a good thing can be hazardous, too . So now whenever people say that I am stingy I say to them, “well, let me tell you the story of my ex-boyfriend, his cheapness is award winning …”
Source
I've heard that regular practice of yoga is beneficial for the skin and that for some people it is the only thing that gives them a nice "glow."
I guess its beneficial because it reduces stress and its not strenuous so you sweat slowly instead profusely, but I don't know because I don't do yoga....yet.
Do you practice yoga, and do you see any positive effects on your skin? Or do you practice other stress relieving excercises such as tai chi or meditation and see effects from that?
Thanks!
I've been reading lately about the connection between diet and acne. I've been suffering from acne for the past few years or more, and I do not want to take pills if I don't have to. I'm just curious what everyones thoughts are on this connection and how strong you think it is. And another acne question... every time I get a pimple, when the actual bump goes away I am always left with red dot looking things on my face. No matter what I do I always look like my face is full of red polka dots. Does anyone know the cause of this and if theres a way to stop it? Thanks.
According to doctors at Loyal University Health Systems it is common for some people to get the blues sometime around November and snap out of it by April. They say it is caused by a lack of light which triggers a chemical imbalance in the brain.
They say that one cure for these blues is to get exposure to natural light. So, even if it is overcast, go outside or open the blinds to let in light. (Of course, don't forget to put on sunscreen!)
I guess I do feel a little blue in the winter. But it doesn't happen until late January, after all the holidays are done. I snap right out of it in March though. I love spring. :smile:
