I am enjoying the book "How Not to Look Old" by Charla Krupp. It's easy to skip around between different chapters on topics such as hair, make-up, clothes, and procedures. There are lots of pictures and a list of the author's "Brilliant Buys" at the end of each chapter.
Is anyone else reading a beauty related book this summer? Or do you have a book that's now on your bookshelf you'd recommend to the BB community?

I bought a brass Menorah recently at the Salvation Army and there's lots of old wax on it and in it. I'd like to clean that up. (Along with the tarnish but I figure TarnX followed by brass polish will take care of that.) My mom informs me that you "can't get brass wet" so hot water is out. How can I safely remove the wax without damaging my Menorah?

I swear if I see one more article claiming everyone can wear red lipstick I'm going to scream.
I can assure you, no matter what Bobbi Brown might say, not everyone can wear red. No matter what the base color might be. I look absolutely rancid in ANY and ALL shades of red. Red makes me look like I have a highly infectious rash.
I cannot wear red lipstick, red polish, and most of all, red clothing.
And what's worse, no one believes me when I say this. They try to argue "well, just try a red with more of a blue base...."
IT WILL NOT WORK!
Red does NOT look good on me.
It will NEVER look good on me.
I think I know my colors better then some person on the internet who's never seen me, don't you?
Who's with me? Who else agrees that not everyone can wear red?

I was switched as a baby, to people of another ethnicity. It's very obvious we're not related. By about 2 years old, I always had very heavy bangs covering almost half my face. I guess it was to hide me.

At about 8 years old, I started noticing heavier facial hair. It grew from my hairline up until eyebrow level--where my bangs had been covering me. It has never been as thick and long as the rest of my hair, so I can still locate my natural hairline easily.

I have very delicate, sensitive, thin skin. If my heavy bangs had been protecting that area for many years, could it have become hypersensitive? Then when I started to push it aside to show my face, the skin grew baby hairs to protect itself?

What can I do to remove it permanently? Is there herbal medicine that will restore my natural hair patterns?

I think it is a crime to keep a baby that is not yours.

God bless you if anyone can give me professional help, to cure this facial hair and explain how it happened. No silly answers please.

The Procter & Gamble Co. plans to phase out U.S. distribution of the century-old Max Factor makeup brand, a spokeswoman said Thursday. The Cincinnati-based consumer products maker said it plans to keep selling Max Factor overseas, where its sales have been strongest, even after it ends U.S. sales of Max Factor products in early 2010. Spokeswoman Anitra Marsh said sales of CoverGirl makeup have risen the past eight years and are nearing $1 billion a year, while Max Factor sales, which total $1.2 billion a year globally, have been better overseas.

Among many antioxidants, the most researched and best known for skincare and treating scars is Vitamin E.

This product has been recommended by professional doctors and pharmacists all around the world. Vitamin E is best in its natural state. The reason behind this is because Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) has 36% MORE biological activity than the synthetic version, hence it works better at treating scars.

Go for serum or creams which shows very high concentration of natural Vitamin E as the ingredient. Make sure they are no chemical substitute which may cause unwanted side effects.

One of my suggested product is NATUR E Scar serum. It contains 28000 iu of Vitamin E and it is all natural. The product has worked so well for me! Do give it a try. You can find it at www.scarremovaltreatment.net.

1: A diet pill that not only works with no side effects, but can also make you healither by reducing colestoral, cleaning out a "fatty liver", and lowering your chances for cancer.
2: A pin-point vacuum for sucking gross stuff out of pores that have become pitted and also sucking ingrown hairs out by the root.
3: A lotion that's cheap and really does get rid of stretch marks.
4: Tools you can use yourself, without help, no matter how limited your mobility is, to remove bacne.
For me, it's a tie between "low rise jeans are slimming" and "cutting your hair makes it grow."

Visually bisecting one's body at its widest possible point is just NOT slimming at all, and ... well, if I had a dime for every month I spent with my hair parked frustratingly at shoulder length because someone told me that if I wanted to grow it to the floor, I needed to get it cut every month, I'd be rich.

Has anyone else noticed this? I bought a pair of heels (higher than I'm used to) in 8.5, and my heels literally kept coming out of them. I couldn't even walk in the blasted things. So I went down a half size, and same problem.

I'm really furious -- they are NICE SHOES, just nice, simply black pumps to replace the ugly ones I've been stuck with since shoes got ugly for the last ten years.

I'm also wondering if these ones aren't just unwalkable. They're much higher than usual, with about a half-inch under the ball of the foot as well. Is there any way to walk in these things WITHOUT my heels coming out of them?

I discovered some miracles along my journey for beauty. But they all left me asking, "Why didn't someone tell me this sooner!!" So I want to ask you- what are your beauty secrets?? What worked miracles for you? What is something everyone should know? I put down a couple of mine:

1. I have really really dry skin- WITH breakouts. I've spent most of my life longing for the perfect skin care routine- but mainly the right moisturizer. I FOUND IT!!!! Raw, unfiltered coconut oil. I got it at the health food store. It is solid at room temperature but liquefies on skin contact. My face is so soft, supple, not greasy at all, and my breakouts are GONE. After the shower, before I dry off, I rub some onto my arms and legs. It's WONDERFUL!! It is THE perfect moisturizer.

2. The best exfoliant ever is baking soda. Make a thick paste with your cleanser and rub over wet skin and lips. So gentle, and perfectly polishes your skin to baby's bottom softness.

3. Once a week, after cleansing and exfoliating, squeeze FRESH lemon juice and rub over your skin (not eye area). Let it sit for 10 minutes or more. The acid in the lemon is an exfoliant, antibacterial, and does all sorts of wonderful things- like depositing vitamin C.

Ok Last night while I was watching game 1 of the world series (GO Phillies!) I saw a commercial for a car and it's slogan was "All that you dreamed of and more" or something along those lines. So in the commercial a woman is driving said vehicle and a shoe hits her windshield and then all of the sudden it was like one of the 7 plagues and it was raining stilettos and a ton of women are running around trying to gather as many pairs of shoes as they can. And I totally get the marketing...the commercial makes sense to me because at the end of it she is shoving quite a few pairs of shoes in the back of the car (the and more part..). But all the while as I am watching the commercial I kept thinking I really wouldn't like a stiletto rain fall because what if the heel hits me in the head... that could be dangerous...sorry I had to post that nonsense...
Have a wonderful day!

1. I use a silicone pastry brush to apply olive oil and coconut oil to my hair. (We had three and I didn't think my husband would miss one.)
2. I use scotch tape to pick up any stray flakes or bits of shadow or mascara that land on my cheeks. It's easier than trying to flick them off with a brush.
3. I keep a little tub of sugar and a little tub of baking soda in the bathroom. I have a tube of lip balm that I stick in the sugar and then use to exfoliate my lips. I mix the baking soda with Cetaphil and use it as an exfoliant. I'm going to try using it as shampoo this weekend too.
4. Olive oil and unrefined coconut oil for all sorts of things.

I wear soft contacts and I have a lot of visible blood vessels on the white part of my eyes.
I hate it because it ages my eyes!
I want to get LASIK so that I don't have to wear contacts and hence the blood vessels won't be visible anymore.
If you had LASIK, what were your results? Do you reccommend it?
Thanks!

Fragrance/Perfumes/Cologne

I haven't bought cologne or perfume for a long time because I bought some SUPEREXPENSIVE stuff in Florence, Italy 2 years ago which exhausted my fragrance budget for the forseeable future. My experience there was a cautionary and ludicrous one. But all too typical of me!

I bought it at the Santa Maria Novella Pharnacia which has to be one of the loveliest but most intimidating shops I have ever been in. It dates from the 15th Century and is a showroom where samples are NOT displayed and NOT ENCOURAGED. You have to ask for samples from behind the counters from the snooty saleswomen and there were signs EVERYWHERE that say ALL SALES FINAL...NO RETURNS. And in addition they don't admit to speaking ENGLISH.

Since I don't speak Italian I looked at the menu of fragrance choices, asked to sample one and then selected something that was unusually reasonably priced. I was quite pleased with myself and continued to browse. I asked to look at the menu again and noticed that there were more expensive items listed as cologne. Upon closer inspection I found to my horror that I hadn't purchased COLOGNE at all but rather AIR FRESHNER. Uh oh...since I had not left the store I begged the salesperson to make an exchange.... She sighed heavily and said OK but then of course I was too intimidated to try out too many samples and finally got something nice called BAGARA. I kept saying "GRAZIE! GRAZIE!" as I slunk out of the shop in embarassment.

Uh... so you can tell I'm not a real fragrance afficionado except for body wash/lotion. I like Lavender but it's not real exciting though easy to find.

Any suggestions on how to choose my fragrance TYPE before smelling everything at ULTA or Sephora? I think I like FRESH rather than FRUITY or SPICY.

Need I say...Grazie!
