I bought a book by Charla Krupp called How Not To Look Old. I was a good read, and had lots of good advise. I don't know about just using brown eye shadows, but I do think we older women need to tone down the eye shadow (bummer.) She gives tips such as giving up dark lipsticks, and sticking to the pinks, having bangs, and lightening up on your hair color and foundation. After giving a piece of advise, she has pictures of before and after shot of celebrities. Most are pretty convincing. Do any of you have any good advise on how to look younger?

Hi all. I am new to this type of communication. I live on the ocean on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada in the town of Sooke. I am an Executive Director, do volunteer work, walk on the beach, love to read and socialize with my women friends. I am 55 years old and have always taken care of my skin. I have very few wrinkles although I am starting to see age spots (red and brown) and hate the slackness around my mouth. Can't afford and not brave enough for plastic surgery. For many years I used Nivea but as I got older I started looking at other products. Recently I decided that I needed to do more research on skin care and anti aging products. Boy, what a mistake that has turned out tIo be!! I am more confused than ever. I can't remember all the names of all the products I have read about (post menopausal memory breakdown - LOL) but I did find a site called Hydroderm that gives great free samples for just shipping and handling - full size samples not just tiny tubes - two large tubes of 'bodyshape' cellulite cream; a liquid serum and face cream; and just got another offer in my email for Triple Effects Eye Serum - amazing for $5.95!!! I was reading some of the discussions and went onto Ebay but again - WHAT REALLY WORKS???? Obagi New Derm Clear; Reversa Anti Aging; WHAT the heck is tretinoin; Mere de la Mer anti aging; clinique zero gravity; retinol green tea; vitamin K creme; derna E with tea tree oil; bee pollen; avacado; Good heavens, what's a girl to do!!
Now I use St Ives peach scrub when I shower
At night I cleanse with Aveeno skin brightening cleanser (my skin does not seem brighter!)
Yves Rocher Botanical Night Creme - no change - it is rather heavy on my skin so can't use in the day before makeup it is too heavy
I am using the free sample Hydroderm Mineral face powder and bronzing powder - I like it a lot
I use the usual variety of liners and mascara(usually Maybelline)

I have been looking at the products that other members list on the discussion site. Where do you guys GET this stuff. I have never heard of most of it!! at least not in BC Canada!!

And then there are ingredients. The more I look up the more I am confused.................. HELP!

Hi,
I live in Switzerland where they have a tv consumer mag which is not sponsored by anybody(no product backs the show);they perform tests anonymously on everything from HD DVD flat screens to anti wrinkle creams. Their test are performed at independent certified laboratories, some foreign, some not and the names of the beauty products are hidden to the laboratories. The one on the anti wrinkle cream for instance, took unamed creams and tested their retractibility on skin tissue (ewww, I know). They tested after say, two hours, 4 hours etc...and rated each cream.
The one on moisturizing cream was tested on volunteers faces with a hydration meter, found in laboratories also with spaces afters hours.
They have the videos of their reports on their site but in french. The products can be Dior,Olay,Nivea and a product by a company called Roc(which I don't know if you have over there). So far, I have followed only one and it has been absolutely great and true to what
they promised. If you wish for me to list the products and evaluations, I would be happy to do so.
If you wish to take a look:www.abe.ch
it's in french as I said and I would be willing to translate.

I recently got Robert Jones' Makeup Makeovers from the library. He makes makeup recommendations by face shape, and eye shape. He uses just a few shadow colors to makeup almost all the women in the book. Its amazing how good he makes them look.

I'm having a great time staying up too late tonight, reading the Beauty Brain's new book online. One thing that's stressed in the first chapter is that unrefined coconut oil is a great way to condition the inner hair shaft and make it stronger. We've all talked about conditioners with coconut oil in them here on the forum but I don't believe anyone ever found one where it's the first ingredient listed, another point the Brains stress if you're looking for coconut oil in a conditioner.
I've decided I want to start deep conditioning my hair with the oil alone. Has anyone found a good source for pure unrefined coconut oil?

I have a lot of blood vessels visible on the whites of my eyes and I wanted to know if you have suggestion on how to get rid of them. I feel that they age my eyes.
I've been getting sleep so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm 20 so its not due to age.
I wear contacts and I wear them for a long time so maybe it is due to this? Eye drops don't seem to help much.
Can this problem be corrected? Can blood vessels become permanent over time from eye contact use? Is there a way to reverse it?
Thanks everyone!

OK, so whats's the deal with varicose veins? here's what I think I know about the subject:
-one cause is standing on your feet a lot (flight attendants, etc)
-there is no cream/lotion that will do anything about them
-the only way to get rid of them is to have a doctor snip the vein surgically
so my questions are:
-how do i prevent them?
-are they genetic? from mothers or fathers side?
-can crossing your legs cause or enhance them?
thanks!

Ok. So I am 20...and you may probably think it's all in my imagination that I have fine lines around my eyes...but seriously it's there.
i wear a product at night that my derm prescribed that contains very drying ingredients like sulfur, talc, alcohol, etc to help dry up oil. It's a white mixture and so when i put it on at night, i am careful not to put it too close to the skin around my eyes. however, i have been noticing for years that the skin around one eye has been developing fine lines....to the point where it is obvious now that when i smile, one eye has a lot of fine lines underneath while the other eye doesn't. last night i noticed that i put the white mixture a little closer to the skin around one eye then the other and that is the eye that has the fine lines. so, i guess because of the 5 or so years that i have using this white mixture, the skin around that one eye has been very dry and when making facial expressions or smiling for all these years, fine lines started appearing.
seriously, its very noticeable. you can see the asymmetry when i smile and it really, really bothers me. i try to take such good care of my skin and it makes me mad that these fine lines are my fault. now, i don't even want to make big facial expressions for the fear of making it worse....and that's no way to live. i want to smile and show joy and happiness without worrying about my face!
what can i do now? i want to prevent them from becoming static fine lines that r always there even when i don't smile or make facial expressions. my facial skin and the skin around my eyes feels tight and its because of the anti-acne products i use, but i NEED to use them.
should i use an eye cream with AHA? any reccomendations??
any help, advice, thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

So I'm going to get highlights tomorrow and wanted to know if I should be worried because I have been using Pantene conditioner lately and working hard to get my hair to be soft, using styling creams and the like. I know the whole Pantene being good or bad debate has been brutally exhausted many times, but regardless of whether it's good or bad for my hair, I do feel that it might be creating build-up that will hinder my highlights. If the build-up is making my hair smoother that's fine by me, but I want to be prepared for the highlights. What should I do?
I know that it's generally suggested that you shouldn't wash your hair the day you get highlights but I am considering doing it anyway - and NOT conditioning - because I want my hair to be free of build up and very clean to best "soak up" the highlights. Any thoughts?
And then, I wanted to ask you guys about deep conditioning. I recently bought the Pantene deep conditioning mask for ethnic hair (I'm blonde but the ingredients in the conditioner seemed to be the best). What can I do to maintain my highlights and keep my hair from getting suoper dry and split on the ends?
THANKS girls!!

Top 3 causes of acne : 1) bacteria, 2) skin cells not shedding properly and 3) over production of oil
(there's also genetics but can't do much about that.....)
So to kill the bacteria, I use a topical antibiotic, Erythromycin 2% in the morning and at night.
To make the skin cells shed properly I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control with 2% salicylic acid
And to help decrease the oil, I use a concoction my derm prescribed for me which has: resorcinol, sulfur, talc, zinc oxide, glycerin, and alcohol 70%. (i think the sulfur also helps to kill bacteria).
I also think that when I eat too much dairy and sushi I break out a lot. Anyone else think that certain foods make them break out?
I also try to wash my hair frequently (every other day or so), change pillow covers every night, sanitize phones, wash hands before touching my face in order to minimize extra oil and bacteria coming in contact with my face. I also sleep with gloves on because I think I scratch/pick on my face while sleeping.
What are your regimens? What else do you think helps keep your acne at bay?
Thanks in advance for all your comments and info!!!
- wear broad spectrum sunscreen all year round (don't forget to apply suncreen around your eye area! and neck)
-wear dark sunglasses to prevent your eyes from squintting
-sleep on satin pillows (i sleep on my side with my face smashed into the pillow and i don't wake up with lines on the side of my face when i sleep on a satin pillow)
-or better yet, sleep on your back (i can't seem to do this! i can't fall asleep on my back. anyone learn to train themselves to sleep on their back?)
-use a gentle cleanser that doesn't dry out your face and eye area
-we have busy lives, but try to make time for sleep...8 hrs is ideal (I've been doing this and I must say I feel better and look better)
-drink lots of water (we always hear this...but do you really have to drink 8 glasses daily?)
- excercise (running, yoga, pilates, tai chi, and try some meditation too)
-Retin A seems promising from all that I have read. but i don't use it (yet) (for those who use retin A, let us know what u think about it!)
Keep the discussion going! :)

It got me thinking, what other science websites do members of the Beauty Brains forum like?

I'm sitting at my desk watching one of my coworkers clip her fingernails. I think this is kind of gross. On the other hand, I don't think twice about reapplying my lipstick at my desk. (I wait for a quiet moment when there aren't a lot of people around.) However, thethoughtfuldresser.blogspot.com/ did a survey. Apparently Europeans consider it (reapplying lipstick in public) acceptable but Americans don't. I didn't realize that this was so open to debate so I thought I'd ask here. What forms of personnal grooming do you consider acceptable in a public venue and at what point do you go to the bathroom to take care of your business?

There have come on the marked several do it yourself gel and acrylics kits. Ranging in pieces but normally being 100 to 150 dollars, are there any point in getting such a kit? I am rather crafty and I do nail art on my own nails, so I think I should be able to at least hack something together, but are the quality of the products good enough. I can buy hell of a good product to strengten my natrual nail for 100 dollars so are the do it yourself kits worth anything?

I read about loads of products that contain vitamins, minerals, andfruit/vegetable extracts, and how these ingredients are so advantageous tothe skin. Do you think/know if these ingredients even penetrate the top layer (epidermis) and enter the dermis where they can actual do some good?If so, what type of quantity do you need to see a noticable difference as most are the last or second last ingredient meaning they are like 1% of the formulation???
Are there any brands that have products which contain such ingredients and actually work?

Thanks,

How to make your nails appear like rippers

Anyone that have play the RPG game Cyberpunk know of rippers, when the nails are removed and knives put in instead. I have found a way to make nails look like knives, very nice for a goth event or for live RPG costuming. Here is what you do:

Let the nail grow so between three and five millimeter show over the tip of the finger. Then begin to file it into a / shape. Very short in one corner and slowly larger all the way around. So that you have a slanting shape. Then wash the hands, make sure they are dry and apply one layer of clear undercoat, if you have something that make the nail stronger apply that to. Then lacquer the nails black. Now comes the fun part. You should get hold of come citadel paints, they are normally used for painting miniature figurines, but they are non toxic and works to paint details on nails. I will however recommend a few layers of regular polish under the paint as the paint stick to hard to the nails, and you want to be able to remove the polish. Also get one standard and one fine detail brush also from citadel.

Add one layer of the color Chainmail over the entire nail. You want the black to slightly show through. The paint a band of about a millimeter whit Mithril Silver color at the top of the nail, along the edge to make the tip of the "blade" look sharp. If you want tiny droplets of the color Red Gore here and there on the nails create a nice effect. Do the Cainmail color whit a basic brush and the band of Mithril Silver and the droplets whit the fine detail brush. Then when dry add a coat or two of clear nail polish as an overcoat, the more shiny the better. And congratulations you have rippers.
