I am African-American and have relaxed/permed hair and go to the hairdresser once a week for a shampoo and style. I recently bought a Sedu straightener that works great, but the end result looks nothing like when I get my hair professionally done. Even if my hair is straight for a while, as soon as I go outside, it starts to loose the straightness. This never happens when I go to the hairdresser! I have tried to be sly and see what products my stylist is using, butI have only come up with a few- something by Phyto, and a styling foam that she completely covers and combs through my hair before putting me under the dryer until my hair is dry. Then she blow drys my hair and then straightens it. I know that serum is a key part of the process but I dont know which one to use, and when to use it. Please help! I'm going broke getting my hair done each week when I know I can do it myself if I just had the right products! Thanks!

Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil vs. Fractionated?

So, along with everyone else on here, the BeautyBrains are helping me become a much more intelligent consumer! Recently, I have been researching coconut oil as a natural product to incorporate into my beauty regimen, and loved reading about all its benefits in the blog. However, I'm wondering about the easiest way to use it, because in addition to a hair strengthener/moisturizer, I also want to use it as a liquid body oil. For this reason, it would be easier to buy the liquid fractionated version for both hair and skin care. But from what I understand, the way to use it on your hair is to take the unrefined state, in which it's a solid, and heat it up to apply it. Does anyone know if I would still get the same benefits using the fractionated oil?

I'd be interested to know what forum members think about whether there is really any difference between professional and over the counter hair products? My hair always LOOKS better after a visit to the salon but I suspect that is NOT because of the products my stylist uses.

I went to ULTA yesterday and was overwhelmed by how many professional products there were BESIDES Redken, Biolage, etc. and some were ridiculously expensive. I use Suave when money is tight and it seems fine but I have also used John Frieda and liked his line.
Please discuss.

How safe is diluting shampoo?

I like to dilute my shampoo to a just-barely-thicker than water consistency, and I put it in a foam soap dispenser to make it foam up when I pump it out. However, diluting shampoo also dilutes the preservatives in the shampoo, which makes me wonder how safe my dilutions are.

Other than not diluting, the only thing I can think of that might make it safe (if it were not) would be to add my own preservatives.

Or am I fine, and worrying for nothing?

I have to tell everyone how happy I am with my decision to donate my hair! At first on Saturday I was antsy, usually I am the first appointment of the day, but this time Iwas the second. I arrived at the salon 45 minutes before my appointment nervous as all hell and still not sure about a haircut. As many of you know I am a low maintenance girl when it comes to my hair, so I wanted something that was not going to take me a million hours to do. So I spent those 45 minutes drinking a cup of coffee that I definitely didn't need:crazy: and looking through the hair magazines. I have to tell you that when I saw the hairstyle, it was like finding my wedding dress...I just knew that was the one!

When Joshua was ready for me he tied it back and cut it before I could say goodbye to it. I hyperventilated for a few minutes and shed a few tears. But after I went to the restroom and splashed cool water on my face I was ready to go!

He colored it and styled it. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! One of these days I'll become more computer saavy and figure out how to post pictures on this here website. Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated. I just really want to share my expierene with you guys!

Oh and now I have to add another 20-30 minutes to the morning routine......I think. We'll see after I wash it tomorrow:rolling:

Organix shampoo and conditioner

I bit the bullet. For the first time in years I tried a new drugstore s/c combo. Someone here(sorry, I forgot who) mentioned Organix products and how they liked them. I read other reviews about them all and people(guys too) really loved them. The yummy coconutty smell was the qualifier. I LOVE coconut and not the fake coconut. This stuff smelled real.

I tried 2 kinds. Shea Butter and Coconut Milk. Shampoo felt pretty normal. I didn't see Jesus. The conditioner felt like it was softening my hair and coating it. When my hair dried it was softer and tamer, especially since it's been really hot and dry in LA. But my hair got poofy again(an ongoing problem). I only wash my hair once a week unless really dirty. Did I mention both shampoo and conditioner are $6.99 for 13 ounces? I just did.. :p I just hate that I paid that much-two times no less.

At the end of the week I just could not stand the puffy hair. I took a shower and washed my hair with an old fave-Finesse 2-in-1. I've been using this off and on since 1984 and love it. (I have to admit I first tried a s/c combo because I'm just lazy, but I've stuck with it for this long) Anyway, I figured if my hair was still puffy after this washing it was probably the weather or something.

Nope, right now my hair looks and feels great. I gave the Shea Butter s/c to my daughter. I'll keep the Coconut around for awhile. But the Finesse works better on my hair.

That's my hair on Organix. Any questions? wink:

I was going to pose this question to just the Brains, but then I thought someone here might know....

My Border Collie is miserable with skin problems. I think it's a food allergy, but I'm not 100% sure. She's stinky and dandruff-y, but I'm loathe to give her a bath with a dog shampoo that will only make her skin more itchy and dry. Soooo...

I joined a BC group on Yahoo, and one shampoo that was lauded highly by a groomer was EQyss MicroTek shampoo and itch spray for dogs. I looked up reviews for EQyss products and this came up first or second in Google:

Eqyss Mega Tek Cell Rebuilder

Oh, I thought, this company makes products for dogs and horses. Interesting. And maybe humans? I then went to the Eqyss site and tried to find info on the shampoo and spray for my dog. What I read made me want to get it for her pronto.

Then I clicked on the Home button and looky there, "Great Benefits For Humans". So I clicked on that link and it goes to this flash page and loads in with an ad for their Mega Tek Cell Rebuilder for human hair. (and the most manic looking models I've ever seen :P). I don't know where this has been sold, but I've never seen it anywhere. I guess maybe I should start buying shampoo and conditioner at my local feed store...

According to the woman who reviewed Eqyss Mega Tek Cell Rebuilder from Epinions, her grandmother used it on her hair, and her horses hair. Both with stellar results. Then there's a interview with the EQyss company president and he says humans and animals should use the Premier shampoo first, the the Cell Rebuilder.

Hmm, odd that there's only one review for "human" use..The claims for the Eqyss Mega Tek Cell Rebuilder are hard to swallow. If it were that good at growing new hair that fast it would fly off the shelves.

But wait, I found other people, mostly dog breeders and horse people who used Eqyss products as well. And loved them. Only after an hour of this ass-nuggetry, I couldn't make heads or tails of anything. Who used what, why, how?...I DO know what I need for my dog, at least.

Brains, what exactly is it that is in these products that make them ok to use for humans? And which ones exactly can humans use? I was told human shampoo is not good for dogs because of the difference in pH. I know Mane and Tail shampoo is or was a horse shampoo. I still haven't found a complete list of ingredients, although lots of people keep saying they are "natural".

Anyone else here used the EQyss products for human use?

Drying Dilemma: What’s The Best Way To Dry Your Hair?

From the main site Ellie asks:
I usually don’t have the patience to blow dry my hair completely. But my hair dresser told me it is better to dry the hair roots completely than half blow drying the hair and then let it dry by itself. Is it true?

Well from what I've heard there are a couple issues when drying your hair.

Not completely drying your hair (air dry or blow dry) and beginning to comb or style with wet hair causes breakage. Milady's Standard Cosmetology says, " Wet hair with normal elasticity will stretch up to 50 percent of its original length and return to that same length without breaking." To follow this, Zoe Diana Draelos's Dermatologic Handbook states, "It has been shown that wet straight hair possesses higher combing friction than dry straight hair. This is an interesting observation leading to the idea that hair should not be combed when wet to avoid stretching to the hair shafts brittle breaking point." In layman's terms- combing your hair while wet is like stretching a rubber band too far- the results? *SNAP*

Additionally, If you try to flat iron or otherwise heat style with wet hair you will end up with dry brittle hair. It zaps the moisture right out and damages the core.

The other issue is that partially blow-drying you hair and letting the rest air dry may cause frizz. It supposedly has something to do with the cuticle (see image below). I think the idea is you're heating up your hair and you've got your hair cuticles opened up and instead of completely drying it and giving a blast of cool air to seal it you just leave it laying open. This can also allegedly cause discoloration or stripping sporadically in hair color because only what has been blow dried pis over dried, damaged, and keratin deteriorated. I don't have the scientific backing on this one so I'm not completely sure this is valid (or that I've reiterated it correctly), but I've heard it several times.

The main point would be to completely dry your hair before styling it. Regardless of how you dry it.

Use a wide tooth comb and leave in conditioner to gently detangle wet hair and don't use a brush until it is completely dry.

Here is the break down of the hair follicle and shaft:

Here's a shot of healthy vs damaged hair- you can see the cuticles looking like shingles in the unhealthy picture

Anyone hear of aquatics shampoo and conditioner? A customer came in and her hair knots like hell all of the time. As soon as i comb it, it is knotty.

In 30 years, I've never seen such crazy instantly knotty hair.

She used some aquatics shampoo at Disney world and felt her hair was so great, she bought some on line at H2Oplus.com. She came for a haircut, and i combed right through her hair...and it wasn't knotty, and stayed pretty smooth. What the hell?

Could this stuff really work?

My impression is that everything is about the same. Is this different?

I'd be curious if anyone has tried it.
