Of course I know who Diane Sawyer is.) but she does her makeup using dollar store products ($15), drug store products ($50) and department store products($500.) Sort of. A makeup artist does her makeup with the department store products. She does the others herself. So you see the same look done at three different price points. No big suprises here but it's fun to watch.
I think she looks best with the $500 makeup but if you've got a professional makeup artist appling expensive makeup, it had better look awesome.
Also, Diane Sawyer has gorgeous hair.

The family and I took advantage of Virginia's Tax-Free Weekend by dropping copious amounts of money at the Prime Outlets in Williamsburg. Besides the school clothes, sneakers, and fancypants sauces from Le Gourmet Chef, I stopped at the Estee Lauder outlet!!! There's also a Lancome store, believe it or not, but all they carry is Lancome.

I bought:
Bobbi Brown Shimmer Block in Peony. I've been eyeballing this at Nordstrom. This one was for the Japanese market! The product insert and sticker on the compact is in Japanese and I immediately thought, "I must post about this at The Beauty Brains!"
Clinique Color Surge eyeshadows in a rich purple and light lilac. Purples look great with my green eyes.
MAC nail lacquer in Cabana. Impulse buy! It's a super-wicked-awesome blue with green/purple shimmer. It goes on quite shear so it'll be fine for work.

Alas, the Boys got most of the clothing. The Kidlet's going into 2nd grade and is growing like mad. Ron (DH) seems to be loosing weight without trying (so not fair) and he got pants. I did get new exercise sneakers at Saucony and some cheapy tanktops at Gap.

OH!!! And I'm happy to say that after walking around in superhumidity, 98 degrees, my DiorShow mascara didn't flake or run. When I used Maybelline's Volume Express I ended up with flaky raccoon eyes.

I use a bronzer by NYC, applying it over my liquid foundation (L'Oreal's True Match Super-Blendable SPF 17).

The foundation gives me great coverage and with the bronzer over it, a beautiful finish. However, by the end of the day, or even after 5-6 hours, the bronzer looks bad - with streaks, patches, and an unsmooth finish. My foundation starts to show in random spots and the makeup overall looks dried out. The bronzer looks really splotchy.

Would using a good finishing powder or primer over my liquid foundation (before applying the bronzer) be the answer? If so, can anyone recommend one?

I don't think my discussion topic is grammatically correct...

Should it be "Of which product do you have too many"? Anyhoo....

I was thinking today, as I was applying lip balm from the tube I keep at my desk, "that it's a good thing I keep one at my desk, so I can just grab it and slick it on. But then, if I can't get to that, I have 3 in my purse. And if that's not nearby, I have 2 in my upstairs bathroom and 1 in my nightstand. And that's not counting the upopened ones I keep for when the opened ones run out. Which they may never do, because I have so many. Now that I'm thinking about things I have so many of, why do cosmetics in a pot fascinate me? I have eye shadows, blushes, lip balms (of course) and lip colors in pots. I may not like a shade of something in a palette or tube, but package it in a pot and by golly, I'll buy it!" (It was a slow day, so I had time to think about this.)

I was reading a review on Makeup Moxie of DuWop Payoff Eyeshadow Intensifier, in which she point's out that, while the product works just fine, you've probably already got something in your medicine cabinet that works just as well -- saline solution or wetting drops. I've never heard of the DuWop product but I have used Paula Dorf's transformer and they sound like the same thing. I love the idea of being able to turn any eyeshadow into an eyeliner but I don't do it that often and can't justify the cost of the PD transformer if I'm not going to use it regularly. Problem solved! Even if you don't wear contacts, a small bottle of saline is a fraction of the cost the PD or DuWop product. You could also put the saline in a spray bottle and use it to dampen your brush if you want to apply your shadow damp to intensify the color.

I thought this was a great idea so I decided to share it here. I'm sure you guys also have some tricks up your sleeve and I'm hoping you'll share too. Don't assume that "everyone knows it already"; post it here so we can all improve our makeup skills.

I've never come up with a good way to organize and store my makeup. I have a train case but it takes up a lot of room and doesn't hold as much as I'd like. Currently, I'm using a canvas organizer for craft stuff. It's a good size and fits nicely under the counter but everything gets all mixed up, which makes it hard to find what you're looking for. Brushes are also tricky, I can't leave them out because they'll become cat toys. I pulled out the products that I don't use that often and put them in my "overflow box" but now I need a way to organize the products that I use regularly.
So, how do you organize you stuff and what do you store it in?

They have a very cool and touching story, but an even better product. After trying it, I just knew I had to help them spread the word. It is an all natural gloss that is 100% cruelty free. It comes in a neat chap stick like tube so there is no mess applying it. It feels great on my lips and the colors look fantastic. I have been wearing it on its own, but it looks great over my lipstick too.
And by the way, it's only $5.00!! Thank God I no longer need to spend $20-$30 per gloss like I was.

It's time for a forum game. Suppose you're traveling to some sort of big event; maybe it's a big business meeting or maybe it's a wedding. Somehow, all of your makeup gets lost. This isn't hard to imagine if you're flying. If you're driving, just pretend you forgot to put your makeup bag in your suitcase. You need to replace everything but don't want to spend a fortune so off you go to the drugstore to replace everything. EVERYTHING. Tell us what the occasion is, what you'd normally use and what you'd replace it with. Whoever comes up with reasonable replacements for all their products wins! There's no prize or anything, just the satisfaction of knowing that the next time you fly and your luggage doesn't arrive, you won't have to hide in your hotel room because there's no Nordstrom nearby.
1. Identify your destination. (No fair saying you're going to the beach and don't need any makeup.)
2. List the products you'd normally use. It's not necessary match colors but the entire look should should be appropriate for the event and something you would actually wear.
3. List the products you'd replace them with. If you're already using a drug store product, you don't have to replace it with a different drug store product.
4. List the products you can't replace and the rest of us will help you fill in the blanks.
You can have two entries going at once, just be sure to keep the lists separate and clearly labeled.
Hopefully, we'll all end up with some new (inexpensive!) products to try out. If you don't have the time or inclination to play, but you've got a favorite drug store product, you can just share that here too.

Me first:
I'm going to an evening wedding.

I would normally use/I'd replace it with:
Smashbox primer/Carmindy's new primer for Sally Hansen
Laura Mercier tinted foundation/Carmindy's new foundation for Sally Hansen
Stila perfecting concealer/???
NARS blush/Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blends Sheer highlighting Blush (???)
Chanticaille lipstick and Laura Mercier clear gloss/Revlon lipstick and Revlon gloss
Laura Mercier flawless fix pencil/???
Paula Dorf brow trio/???
Smashbox gel eyeliner/l'Oreal HIP cream eyeliner
Laura Mercier metallic creme eye color/L'Oreal HIP cream shadow paints
Neutrogena healthy volume mascara

I'm missing three or four products.
The Paula dorf brow product has a wax and two colored powders. It's similar to Benefit's Brow Zings. I could get by with a pencil but prefer the wax/powder combination.
The Stila concealer comes in a tube and blends really easily. It's not opaque but it's easier to work with then a creme.
The flawless fix pencil is a flesh colored pencil. It's great for tidying up you lip line but can also be used as an all over concealer. If I could replace this, then I could do with out the concealer.
The Neutrogena blush is sheerer than the NARS blush. You can build it up but it gets opaque and cakey. It would do in a pinch but I'd prefer something a little more pigmented. I can't imagine there's anything in a drug store that compares to a NARS blush but maybe I'm wrong.

OK...I know this is a slight variation on the excellent thread on replacing your lost make-up bag, but here goes anyway.
With the economic "downturn" (reality check...RECESSION) are you cutting back on your beauty product/routine/ purchases? If so, tell us how. If not, why? And what product/regimen are you NOT READY to give up until gas gets to, say, $10/gallon?
For me I guess it would have to be having my hair professionally colored and cut. I have tried going 6 weeks instead of 5 but I get so depressed by my appearance that I go back to 5 weeks.
I can always switch to Suave products because, to be honest, they are pretty darn good though sometimes I feel "deprived" when I buy them (PURELY a PSYCHOLOGICAL DYSFUNCTION).

Hi,
I hope I'm not the only one with this problem:I can't find an eyeliner that "stays". I've tried pencil, powder, gel to powder, gel. The liner looks great for about 5-10 minutes and then, poof, it disappears. The longest lasting is Bobbi Brown gel liner, if I first apply a mattifier to the area above the lash line. That stays on for a few hours.

Since I've also had allergic reactions to liquid eyeliners, I've tried to stay away from them, but perhaps liquid eyeliner is the only one that will work?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi everyone,

I like to use black eyeliner on my bottom eyelid. But there must be something wrong with my eyes, because the eyeliner either disappears or smudges after about 1/2 hour. I don't touch my eyes and don't use any other make up.
Many of my friends use eyeliner the same way and it stays on the whole day!
I have tried eyeliners from Clinique, MAC, and several other companies, but it's always the same.
I have no idea why it happens to me. Maybe my eyes produce more tears than normal?
Does anyone have a similar problem or knows if there is anything I can do about it?

I live in Switzerland, don't know if it matters.

Thanks :)

Can anyone explain the difference between wrinkle fillers and primers? The LAST THING I need is another product to add to my vanity top but every once in awhile when I am not in flattering lighting I notice...yikes...I have both fine and deep wrinkles.
I assume fillers are like spackling holes in the wall before painting?
Also, I know that powder is verboten as it "settles" in wrinkles. However when my skin gets oily in the summer (I have combination skin) I use one of those blotting powders. Should I be using blotting sheets instead so as not to deposit anything on my skin? Ah...so many questions.

Please enlighten me, fellow forum members and thanks for your input.

Ok girls I have been over the past few months taken on the goal of learning to apply eyeliner. I never wore it when I was younger and my mother didn't really wear make-up so I never really learned. I'm wondering what are some good brands (sometimes I don't mind paying for it as long as I can use it) and what is the best technique for applying it.

Thanks ladies!

I seriously LOVE this line. I have all the products lined up in a pretty display on my dresser, while all of my other products (even my beloved NARS Alhambra Duo) is just dumped on 1 side.
I took some more pix of me wearing the various lipstick shades and the products itself here:
This is actually the first MAC collection that I've played with in this much detail. I don't think I have to say anything about the quality of MAC products, but well.. it's definitely worth the extra few bucks.

Mineral Makeup--Paula's review

Hola everyone!
I had a few minutes yesterday to check out Paula B's site and her review on mineral makeup.
I do not agree with some of her findings.
She said that for coverage on problem skin, you need heavy coverage. This is just not true. I have clients with pretty bad scarring and a light coverage is all that is needed.
She also said that this is not good for those with dry skin. Hmmmm, well, my skin is almost as dry as a person taking Accutane and I have no issues with the minerals. I have severe eczema and have literally no oils in my skin. New Years' Eve I broke out with the rash ALL over my face. I used the minerals and it really helped to calm it quite a bit. (I have food allergies and ate something that usually only breaks out the rash on my hands. Boy did I get it good on the face!)
I have not had ANY client react to the makeup. I use it on my waxing clients to calm the skin after the hair removal on their faces. (brows, lip, chin, etc) It immediately calms the skin.
It is also a sunscreen and I do NOT need any other sunscreen when I use this. I have worked outside for about six hours and had the minerals on my face and neck and not got burned, but my shoulders and arms were exposed and I burned.
This is my observations from using this on my clients and on my own skin for almost eight years. Minerals are not anything like she described them. Well, the one I use anyway, which is Jane Iredale.

The Placebo Effect/Buying New Products

I wonder if any of you have this experience...NOT YOU KAREN who does very careful testing of the products you buy to be sure they are working...when you buy something new...skin cream, makeup, shampoo...that might be a tad more expensive than usual do you convince yourself it is "working"?

I mention it because as most of you know I finally bought Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer after months of hesitation because of the cost. I was convinced initially that it was superior to my old Revlon stuff but now I don't know. Same thing with my L'Occitaine Hand Cream...it just doesn't seem to be working any better than my less expensive Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. And finally there is my Benefit Dandelion Powder...I REALLY liked it when I first used it but now it seems not quite so dazzling.

Oh dear...it is probably some deep dysfunction in my psyche that causes this affect or my restless desire for something new. Sigh...

Face Primers?

After absolutely falling in love with Urban Decay's eye primer, I'm beginning to wonder if face primers are also amazing. I usually use an oil absorbing moisturizer and Neutrogena's dry touch sunscreen under my makeup. The sunscreen makes my foundation glide on smoothly and look good, but I find that I lose most of my foundation by the end of a long day. I have oily skin, so I know that is part of it, but I'm pretty good about not touching my face and I use a good foundation (MAC). I don't know where the foundation goes!

Anyway, I was looking into Smashbox's primer and MAC's prep + prime with spf 50. Has anyone used these products or anything like them? I'm headed to an academic conference next week and I'd really like my makeup to stay on throughout the day.

Hi everyone.
I was looking for a lip plumper and came across this web site
http://www.lips2kiss.com
What I was wondering was does anyone else have experience with this system (good or bad)??
I'd really like to hear others opinions since it's a lot of money to pay if it doesn't work.
It also sounds like a lot of work - one part of the regime includes having to apply a cream to the lips every half hour!
Anyway I really hope someone can offer some opinions before I part with $80 since I am feeling extremely tempted.

DiorShow...is it worth it?

Oh. My. Gawd! It's so worth the $23 IMO. After reading lots of buzz about this mascara I decided I had to have it. I normally use L'oreal Voluminous, Maybelline Volume Xpress, and sometimes Lancome Definiciles (same stuff as the Voluminous but 3 times as expensive).

I got the regular DiorShow in Chestnut. I'm fair skinned, green eyes, red (help from a bottle but my mom's a natural) and the chestnut is a rich brown. Two coats does wonders for my lashes! I'm lucky I don't need an eyelash curler so I can't give you my experience there. However, this mascara goes on smooth with no clumps.

I read some negative reviews at Amazon. I think mascara should be purchased in person vs online; who knows how long it's been sitting in a warehouse? I got mine at Dillard's for $23 and I'll definitely buy again. It kills me to spend that much on a product I faithfully toss every 3-4 months but I'm not going to mess with my eyesite.

One caveat it you're sensitive to fragrance. It has a slight perfumey scent. I understand all this stuff has some sort of fragrance unless it specifically says no added fragrance.

About a year ago I used my friend's lip plumper and I don't remember the brand, but I used it and and then my lips were desert dry and peeling for DAYS and probably weeks. I probably won't buy one, but what do you ladies think of them? And is there possibly one out there that won't burn my husband or nephew's skin if I kiss them with it on? True story...but not from my own expierence.

Neutrogena makes a cooling lip balm that is slightly tingly, but not enough to burn sensative skin.

Lead in Lipstick

Tomorrow I'm blogging about this email from KP about the dangers of lead in lipstick. I thought you'd enjoy reading the entire story.

You might find this important – LIPSTICK INFORMATION

Something to consider next time you go shopping for lipstick… This comes
from someone who works in the breast cancer unit at Mt. Sinai Hospital , in
Toronto.

From Dr. Nahid Nemai: If there is a female you care anything about, share
this with her. I did!! I am also sharing this with the males on my e-mail
list, because they need to tell the females THEY care about as well.
Recently a lipstick brand called "Red Earth" decreased their prices from $67
to $9.90. It contained lead. Lead is a chemical which causes cancer.

The lipstick brands that contain lead are:
CHRISTIAN DIOR
LANCOME
CLINIQUE
Y.S.L
ESTEE LAUDER
SHISEIDO
RED EARTH (Lip Gloss)
CHANEL (Lip Conditioner)
MARKET AMERICA-MOTNES LIPSTICK.

The higher the lead content, the greater the chance of causing cancer.
After doing a test on lipsticks, it was found that the Y.S.L. Lipstick
contained the most amount of lead. Watch out for those lipsticks which are
supposed to stay longer. If your lipstick stays longer, it is because of the
higher content of lead. Here is the test you can do yourself:

1. Put some lipstick on your hand.
2. Use a Gold ring to scratch on the lipstick.
3. If the lipstick color changes to black, Then you know the lipstick
contains lead.

Please send this information to all your girlfriends, wives and female
family members. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center Dioxin Carcinogens cause cancer, especially breast cancer.
