Hi Brains, in the midst of the new antioxidant craze I have noticed the touting of several "exotic" tropical fruits for their exceptionally high antioxidant content. It seems like some people are on a mission to find the world's antioxidant super fruit. Naturally, these "super fruits" are crossing over into out skincare products. For example, DHC features lines based on both the Acerola and Camu Camu fruits. These key ingredients are supposed to help brighten and even whiten your skin! Can a product containing a fruit with a high antioxidant content help whiten or brighten aging, sun damaged skin?

Dear Brains,

I've recently been doing a search on various products that will help with enlarged pores and broken capillaries, two issues that I suffer greatly from. In my search I discovered various creams from all over Asia that include Oyster Shell Powder as part of their active ingredients. According to some of the websites I've visited, it supposedly shrinks pores and helps improve overall complexion. What do you think? Have you heard of any topical benefits (or benefits in general, as I've seen vitamins with OSP) to using this ingredient?

"For centuries in Japan, both Kabuki actors and geishas used uguisu no fun, or nightingale droppings, to clean off their thick white makeup and soothe their faces; apparently, guanine, found in the droppings, helped their complexions. Shizuka’s poop has been sanitized through exposure to ultraviolet light, then finely milled and mixed with rice bran. It’s applied as a mask and costs $180 for a 50-minute treatment."

Is it ok for me to use 10% glycolic pads on my face before using Ziana (which contains clindamycin and 0.025% tretonin)?

I usually use the 10% glycolic pads in the AM but my AM regimen is getting extensive and so I would like to move the glycolic pads to the PM before applying the Ziana. I also feel like it would be better in the PM as it will remove any last traces of makeup, etc. Will the pH's, ingredients, etc mesh well? Will they both be effective if applied both at night? I am a OSPT btw.
Here are the ingredients of the 10% glycolic pads:
Salicylic Acid 0.5 %, Water, Alcohol Denat., Glycolic Acid, Arginine, Butylene Glycol, Witch Hazel Extract, Chamomile Extract, Green Tea Extract, Comfrey Extract, Peach Extract, Whole Leaf Aloe Vera, Allantoin, Fragrance, Triethanolamine.

What is your winter skincare routine? Although I’m satisfied with my routine, I’m always in the search the proverbial Holy Grail product.
So please share!!

Skin type: Dry-Normal

Cleansers(s)/ Exfoliator(s):
- Day: Olay Foaming Face Wash, Sensitive Skin - This product is genius in its simplicity. No fragrance or crazy claims; just gentle and effective.
I especially like the hygienic dispenser because I despise squeeze tubes. I even use this during more humid weather because I generally
have sensitive, dry-normal skin.
- Evening: Eucerin Sensitive Skin Gentle Hydrating Cleanser – This removes the accumulated dirt and makeup more effectively without being
abrasive. Ditto the love above.

Toner(s):
Do not need it.

Face Moisturizer: (s):
- Day: Eucerin Everyday Protection Face Lotion, SPF 30: Very effective; product design is hygienic
- Evening: Cerave Moisturizing Lotion: Absorbs beautifully, fragrance free and moisturizing.

Body lotion(s):
- Day: Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Skin Therapy Lotion, Aloe: Reliable and effective; makes my skin soft and supple.
The fragrance is not overbearing.
– Ditto the love above.

Other(s):
- Neutrogena Oil-Free Oil-Free Acne Stress Control, 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment: I love this for spot on treatment when my
teenage hormones are raging. Perfect for days when I am particularly pimply!

Givenchy Le Soin Noir

Hi! Can you take a look at Givenchy's Le Soin Noir? It's really expensive and it gets great reviews from individuals, but does it really do what it claims to do? Thanks!! Gina

Sephora sells it for $360 for 1.7 oz.

Here are some of the details:

Le Soin Noir
What it is:
A beauty-renewal skincare cream.

What it does:
Givenchy Le Soin Noir contains an extremely precious, natural age-defying ingredient that will secure its status in you're anti-aging routine. Used for the first time in cosmetics, Vital Black Algae Sap Concentrate restores communication between the skin's cells. Givenchy's researchers have developed a method to infuse this potion with a rare black algae extract to help maintain and prolong cellular longevity. Parched skin drinks in the hydration it needs—leaving your complexion firm, glowing, and even-toned.

What else you need to know:
Vital Black Algae Sap Concentrate is found in the depths of the ocean and reconstructs a catalyst in the skin to counteract the signs of aging. Only Vital Black Algae Sap Concentrate contains these precious black molecules that are extremely rich in vital fatty acids. The result is skin that draws new strength to protect the cells' DNA from light-induced aging and wrinkles as it becomes firmer and restores itself. Smooth it on morning and night to form an invisible barrier that protects against the signs of aging caused by environmental and internal assaults.

Fresh's Brown Sugar Body Polish is fantastic: gentle, soothing, and VERY moisturizing - not to mention its delicious scent.

However, I do think the product is overpriced. I'm uncertain as to whether the positives compensate for the following:
- Firstly, the scrub is made of sugar and oil - in a moist/humid environment, it will undoubtedly attract mold over time.
- I also noticed, upon returning to Sephora and looking at the sample for a second time, that the product had separated with regards to its consistency - probably due to its composition: it had broken down to the point where you could see the sugar collected at the bottom of the jar and the oil (with a bit of granulation) sitting on top.

All in all, it seems to me that the best option would be to make one at home - but not too much of it each time as it obviously doesn't 'age' well. I do recommend giving it a try - it really feels amazing. I have dry, very sensitive skin and this scrub left it feeling soft and silky smooth :)

I just used the Dove Hair Conditioner to wash my hands after washing with the regular hand soap. I have to say I'm impressed.
The question is, why isn't there any BODY conditioner that can be used all over after a shower gel? This could save us the trouble of slathering the moisturizer afterwards. Even if we do moisturize, the all over conditioner would still help a lot in increase the moisture levels.

Is there any all over conditioner available out there ?

I would to know how often I should exfoliate. I want to do it enough to do the job, but not so much to damage my skin. Any suggestions?

After looking at the ingredients, though - Water, Stearic Acid, Linseed Oil, Soybean Oil, Fragrance, Ammonium Hydroxide, Camphor, Menthol, Eucalyptus Oil, Propylene Glycol, Gelatin, Calcium Hydroxide - I'm worried that some of these might not be good for the skin. I do have sensitive skin but so far I haven't had any skin irritation or bad reactions from using the product. What does everyone think? Has anyone else tried this?
