My dermatologist suggested that I try Spironolactone for my acne. He said it was a testosterone antagonist and that before I start it I would have to get blood work done to determine if it is ok for me to take. I've tried different antibiotics and topical treatments for years and years and my face still is pretty bad, so now the derm thinks it may be a hormonal problem.
Has anyone taken this medication for acne? If so, I'd love to hear your opinions about it.
On another note, I started taking Ortho tri-cyclen lo for my skin 3 weeks ago and I broke out very badly when I hit the 2 week mark. What are people's experience with birth control for acne? I read that Yaz and Yasmin (I'm not sure if they are the same thing) both have 25? mg of Spironolactone in it...and know I am wondering if I should have tried that instead of Ortho tri-cyclen lo.
But I am going to stick with the Ortho tri-cyclen lo for another month because I know that with some treatments for acne, it can get worse before it gets better. So keeping my fingers crossed!

I would love to hear from anyone if they have any suggestions, or if you use these products, what do you think. I sometimes feel like I am talked into using products I really don't want. Personally, I like them the new formulas much better than the old ones but I don't mind lighter skin anyway. It's healthier doncha know.

Ok, so after a really crappy day. I was pretty bummed out and feeling...well crappy. I decided to go shopping after work. I was leaving after spending tons of money and I was approached by a sales girl from a kiosk selling this product Obey Your Skin. She was trying to get me to buy the hand buffing set and then noticed my lovely oily acne gross face and proceeded to demonstrate this Advanced Peeling Gel. She claims that it is all natural and made with dead sea minerals...It was interesting because it was a gel and when she applied it to my arm and gently massaged it...it became like water...as she said and then waited 5 seconds and started massaging it again for about a minute and she claimed that it was cleaning, purifying and removing dead skin cells. It looked like it was removing dead skin and my skin is soft. She said you only use it once a week.

I told her I was going to do some research...aka ask you guys before I went back :)

Has anyone ever used this product before and is it worth $140?

Hello ! I am 22 and recently went to a spa for a free consultation. It was recommended that I try the photophacial with the microdermabrasion. It is pricey lets say over $300. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried these procedures and how it went? I am considering it. I am mostly interested in removing the fine lines on my forehead and the fine lines under my eyes !! I feel that I am too young to have those. Its beginning to look leathery. AAAAHHHH ! Its scary ! I would totally go for it if I had a guarantee that it has worked for other people !! Any personal experiences would be great. Also any more info on the photophacial, I wonder if it does what it claims to do. Help please. Also if you have any suggestions on an eye cream that truly helps with the fine lines, leathery look !! Thank you !

I have had sensitive skin since I was a young girl and ever since I started working, it has gotten worse. My job requires me to do a lot travelling and keep long hours. As such, my sensitive skin developed acne over time and with my busy schedule, I haven’t had time to fully attend to it. I consulted many beauty therapists over the years with varying results. Some treatments even made my skin reddish and itchy due to their chemical contents! A friend recommended Rosa T to me a few months back and I was really sceptical initially as I thought it was “just another beauty product”. Well, I have never been so happy to be proven wrong in this case. After the first few times using Rosa T, I began to notice a marked difference on my skin. It wasn’t as oily nor reddish as before and it gradually cleared off my acne until it’s hardly noticeable today. Best of all, due to the all natural ingredients, my skin is now healthy and gives off a natural glow, something which eluded me for many years. Today, I am a very loyal and dedicated user of Rosa T and gladly recommend this product to all my friends. Thank you Garden of Eden for the marvellous Rosa T! You can purchase it online now http://www.acne-treatment.cc.

Hi all. I am new to this type of communication. I live on the ocean on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada in the town of Sooke. I am an Executive Director, do volunteer work, walk on the beach, love to read and socialize with my women friends. I am 55 years old and have always taken care of my skin. I have very few wrinkles although I am starting to see age spots (red and brown) and hate the slackness around my mouth. Can't afford and not brave enough for plastic surgery. For many years I used Nivea but as I got older I started looking at other products. Recently I decided that I needed to do more research on skin care and anti aging products. Boy, what a mistake that has turned out tIo be!! I am more confused than ever. I can't remember all the names of all the products I have read about (post menopausal memory breakdown - LOL) but I did find a site called Hydroderm that gives great free samples for just shipping and handling - full size samples not just tiny tubes - two large tubes of 'bodyshape' cellulite cream; a liquid serum and face cream; and just got another offer in my email for Triple Effects Eye Serum - amazing for $5.95!!! I was reading some of the discussions and went onto Ebay but again - WHAT REALLY WORKS???? Obagi New Derm Clear; Reversa Anti Aging; WHAT the heck is tretinoin; Mere de la Mer anti aging; clinique zero gravity; retinol green tea; vitamin K creme; derna E with tea tree oil; bee pollen; avacado; Good heavens, what's a girl to do!!
Now I use St Ives peach scrub when I shower
At night I cleanse with Aveeno skin brightening cleanser (my skin does not seem brighter!)
Yves Rocher Botanical Night Creme - no change - it is rather heavy on my skin so can't use in the day before makeup it is too heavy
I am using the free sample Hydroderm Mineral face powder and bronzing powder - I like it a lot
I use the usual variety of liners and mascara(usually Maybelline)

I have been looking at the products that other members list on the discussion site. Where do you guys GET this stuff. I have never heard of most of it!! at least not in BC Canada!!

And then there are ingredients. The more I look up the more I am confused.................. HELP!

I'm sure this has already been covered someWHERE on the site so forgive the duplication.
Stable packaging is a big concern with anti-oxident ingredients in skin care poducts. Can anyone tell me what happens to those products that are packaged in jars? Paula Begoun says this is a BIG NO/NO because of the efficacy of the products are compromised by exposure to light and air.
My question is how SOON do the ingredients degrade and become ineffective. My specific example would be my Olay Age-Defying Anti-Wrinkle Replenishing Night Cream which is rated HIGHLY by Begoun for its ingredients but then DOWNGRADED because of unstable packaging.
HELP, PLEASE, I am going to try this again since the Forum seems more active these days.
Is any one else out there aware/knowledgable on this. It is difficult to avoid JARS but I sure don't need to be buying products that may be well-formulated but lose their potency once the jar is exposed to the air.

Usually I have no MAJOR problems with skin care products...except for them NOT transforming me into a 20 year old. However lately I have been having some trouble. Sigh.
I have been using the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil for several weeks and now have several zits...grrrrr...I loved the stuff to begin with...maybe I am not getting it all off? I follow it with a cleanser and TONER so this shouldn't be happening should it? It also seems to have dried out my cuticles for some reason. I have solved that problem with vaseline applied directly to my cuticles.
Next I purchased some Ponds Cleansing Cloths while on vacation and managed to aggravate my roseacea by scrubbing too hard...that was DEFINITELY MY mistake because I loved that it was exfoliating my dry areas. Sigh....again.
Finally, I have been using my Ulta body cream (scented) and I think it is causing breakouts on my upper back. I love the scent but I suspect that is the culprit here. Grrrr...again.
Now that I have written this all out...I KNOW what the problems are. However, does anyone else have trouble with the DHC Cleanser...or scented body creams. Besides the scent with the body cream is there something else that can cause breakouts?

So lately I have been a bit nostalgic...too long of a story to get into here, but I have been missing my Great Aunt Helen lately who I totally idolized as a child. She never got married and never had kids and she had such a flair for life and was really great with us grand neices and nephews. She use to stay in our summer cottage down on the Chesapeake Bay and ALWAYS ALWAYS used Pond's Cold Cream. Her skin was amazing and she had to be in her 70s when I was born. She used it daily. It was in the bathroom year round so when we would go down to spend our summers there it was always there. My sister and I used to get into it when we were little and she never got upset.
Anyway, my question is does anyone still use Pond's Cold Cream or cold creams in general? I have been thinking about it lately, read some reviews on makeupalley which were mixed. Those that love it LOVE it and those that don't really don't.

I am 32 years old. I feel like I take pretty good care of my skin. But, I have the WORST deep frown lines/wrinkles b/w the eyebrows. Out of all the billions of products out there, I just want to know what works best without breaking the wallet. I have tried several "drug-store" items, i.e., Olay, L'oreal, etc. They don't work. I have tried a couple of more expensive things and I really haven't seen that much improvement. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone tried anything that works?

PABA versus Titanium Dioxide as a sunscreen

Hello Folks

We make most of our own cosmetics - and all our soaps and shampoos, many based on shea butter. As it turns out, shea butter contains a natural sunscreen, estimated to be factor 2 to 3.

There are two obvious, available ingredients to use, PABA or Titanium Dioxide to increase this to factor 15, the recommended minimum. Some people feel comfortable with one and shun the other, and others feel just the opposite.

My questions are these:
1. What experiences do you have with either one or the other of these two ingredients - good or bad?
2. What other natural, non-animal ingredients have you experienced that you feel are good (or better!) options to PABA or Titanium Dioxide?

Thanks in advance,

OK I am beginning to notice those little verticle lines at the edges of my lips lately. I can't wear colored lipsticks because they bleed into the lines. I really noticed it when I put on some Benetint lip stain the other day. I am not a smoker and haven't been for years and even when I did it was very little.
Just wondering....is there anything I can do about them. I'm slightly saddened by them. I use lip balm all the time...maybe drinking more water....*sigh*

Whenever I get sick, my skin gets rough and hypersensitive. To make matters worse, I have a cold so I'm constantly blowing my nose, which is now red and tender. I also have a C shaped area around one eye that looks and feels like it's sunburned. I'm always amazed how quickly the condition of my skin deteriorates when I get sick and how long it takes to get it back to it's normal state. Long after my cold is gone, my skin will be ruddy and rough.

Does this happen to anyone else? How do you deal with it? My skincare regimen goes right out the window when I'm sick and I usually go back to the same routine once I'm feeling better. I'm just wondering what you guys do. Do you stick with "the same old, same old" or do you give your skin a little extra TLC? I though maybe I could get my skin back into tip-top shape faster if I took better care of it while I was sick but I think if I use my regular products I'll just irritate it further. Any suggestions?

The blog today reminded me I need to find a decent sunscreen. The one I use is ok, but it burns slightly.(Hawaiian Tropic) And I often go out to Death Valley(because I'm a desert rat) so I need to slather it on.

I'd prefer to use a non-animal tested brand that doesn't make my eyes go Warner Bros. at the cost. Any suggestions?

i was so excited about last night's beauty blog about the cause of rosacea to be finally 'unmasked'. i have suffered from this disorder for many years, but just recently became aware of it and started daily medications to reduce the symptoms. for many years, scientists have been able to identify 'triggers' but not the underlying cause of this vascular flushing disorder.

i have a lot of links that i have found helpful in my own search to improve the situation. i would like to share those as well find out what works for others.

Perricone Hydrating Mask

I read Anonymous Blonde's review on the Perricone hydrating mask.
I am not sure what the directions said, but for any product to help the skin with dryness, it needs to be exfoliated first. A mask alone will not help dryness.
This is like your hands in the dry, winter weather. You can apply all the hand creams you like, but unless you exfoliate the dead, dry skin, the creams will not work.
Now I am not saying that if you exfoliate before using this product that it will do what it claims, but as a rule, this is how skin care works.
This is what I found on the product:
Product Description
A hydrating treatment mask enriched with Olive Oil Polyphenols and Hydroxytyrosol. Helps in delivering instant and long term hydration to the skin. Assists in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Protects against dehydration. Enhances skin elasticity and suppleness.
The words that I read are: HELPS; ASSISTS; PROTECTS; ENHANCES. Buzz words that make consumers want to buy the product.
If you do exfoliate, use a good one. That does not mean it needs sandy granules to work. Then your masks and moisturizers will work for you.
buenos dias,

Is there any way (without surgery) to tighten skin around the jaw and neck area to reduce the appearance of a double chin? I am currently trying to lose weight but I'm curious if there is anything out there that is known to tighten facial skin naturally. Also, I have a naturally round face and always wanted more prominent cheekbones ... could tightening/firming the facial skin help the cheek bones to pop out better? Thanks.
