So my skin's been turning kind of an unnatural white since I've been using a sunscreen that seems to block almost all the rays. I thought I'd try a sunless tanner to see if it gave me a more natural color. Because I'm a novice, I diluted it greatly in a regular moisturizer (and used a product recommended for first time users). I don't like the color much (too dark and too golden, in spite of dilution), and on top of that, I think it irritates my skin--anyone heard of that? Anyway, I don't think I'll be a repeat user, but it's fun to experiment. I guess I'll just be using bronzer from now on (as I had before) to try to achieve a less ashen white look on the face. Or maybe down the line I'll try a different sunless tanner product.

I have had a terrible time trying to find a product that would heal my dry, chapped lips. I have bought several different kinds of chapsticks, lip balms and glosses over the past few months. I was starting to believe there wasn't a solution.

I recently read The Beauty Brains blog post called "The World's Top 5 Skin Moisturizing Oils" and thought ok, I just need some petroleum jelly.

I had a tube of Eucerin Aquaphor in the house, so I put it on my lips overnight, and in the morning right after getting out of the shower. I am shocked at the success! My lips are finally starting to heal! Who would of thought it could be so simple?! This is definitely the best products I've used for lip care so far.

I don't understand why products made specifically for lip care don't work!! Anyone know of any other products that work as well?

Hi
Optiphi (www.optiphi.com) is winning a lot of awards here in SA in the media. I am a sceptic when it comes to anti-ageing claims, but there seems to be a lot of hype around this product range and I would really appreciate it if you could give me an informed opinion. In short, my question is two-fold:
1: do anti-ageing products really do anything?
2: in your professional opinion, does this product do anything? Their Protecting Revitalizer contains the following ingredients: Aqua, Trimethylopropane Tricaprylate/ Tricparate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Thermus Thermophillus Ferment, Ethoxydiglycol, Imperata Cylindrica (Root) Extract, Siegesbeckia Orientalis Extract, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isotearyl Hydroxystearate, Laureth-7, Polyacrylamide, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteth-24, Choleth-24,Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Glyceral Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate,Phospholipids, Propylene Glycol, Steareth-2, Phenoxyethanol, Retinaol, Sodium Ascorbate, Tocopherol, Alcohol, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, PEG-8, Centaurium Erythraea Extract, Ethylhexyglycerin, Hydrogenated Phosphatidycholine, Terenone, Carbomer, Cholestrol, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate.

Kind of self-centered, but just wanted to share what is working for my aging, rosacea skin. I had been using retinol daily which was too much! I did 3 simple steps that make my skin so much happier, even less fragile looking:
1) sunscreen with higher zinc oxide content (pure mineral sunscreen is ideal for sensitive skin, but too white on me, so I use chemical-mineral combo products)
2) retinol product no more than every other night--wow did that help (weird thing is, my wrinkles even look less visible to me than when I was using it daily)
3) no liquid makeup or tinted moisturizer; powder/mineral only over sunscreen
My skin is looking so much better. The only problem is that I think with the mineral sunscreen, I'm blocking out even more rays and I'm afraid I'm turning an almost ghostly color (not just from the white cast in the product--but even when it's thorougly washed off). I don't want a tan, mind you, but I'm afraid I'll ultimately look like a relative of mine who was really obsessive about sun protection and wound up looking like a sheet of paper, really unnatural white.

Absorbtion of skin care cosmetics

Hi ...I am Tweedy and I live in UK.

Some of my reading shows that food ingredients are used not only in food and nutritional supplements but in
cosmetics and big claims are made for them.

Skin is very tough but some people claim that 60% of skin cosmetics are absorbed through the skin into the body
but others say that this alarmist and only small %s are absorbed.

My questions are;

How much of ordinary skin care cosmetics, like lotion, creams and gels, get throught the skin's
outer layer into the dermis and then into the blood stream. Is it 60% or 6%?

Big claims about food substances are made by natural cosmetics makers but surely the
molecular structure of these would stop them getting into the dermis except through pores
or damaged skin.

That is 2 questions really but I read that molecular structure is
important for penetration of the skin.

Tweedy

Okay, I think I need a dermatology blog for this question...but anyway. Here's my story: I am so pale when I don't get much sun exposure that (combined with my pink cheeks from rosacea) I get told I'm "very fair." But this doesn't fit with how I remember my pigmentation as a kid. Or more importantly, how my skin reacted/reacts to the sun. I grew up in the 70's (so no daily sunscreen), and the first time in my life I ever remember getting a sunburn (by which I mean a little pink, and only on the tops of my shoulders) was age 13. It happened at an outdoor graduation at high noon in May, and I was wearing a sundress and no sunscreen. I wasn't sure this could be right, so I asked both of my parents, and neither of them ever remembers me having a sunburn as a child. I always tanned quite easily. When I have sunburned as an adult, it has always been a pink and not a lobster red sunburn. So--can you be pretty darn pale and still be a skin type III? Not that it matters, just curiosity. I think my dermatologist has me down as type II, but if you disagree, I'll tell him I asked on a beauty blog and he should amend that:)
P.S. I've taken the on line fitzpatrick skin type questionnaires, and I always come out type III. I guess I'm making my own case...

Jergens had come out with their naturals line (and believe me i'm not just a sucker for "natural" products) The scents are nice and they are more moisturizing then the original. How did this get approved if there is formaldehyde in it? Please Help!

exploring mineral sunscreen--recommendations, anyone?

So I recently started using an spf tinted moisturizer that contains only chemical sunscreens. But I didn't want to rely on it for sun protection. I tried my regular sunscreen under it, but the combination was too greasy. The mineral sunscreen I have was much more mattifying, but gave me a pronounced white/gray cast that affected the color of the makeup. So I'm exploring other options. I tried LRP anthelios (the one I have is chemical plus titanium dioxide), and ouch, skin burn--too much chemical sunscreen layered under that tinted moisturizer! The other issue I had with the anthelios--same as pure mineral sunscreens I've used--the titanium dioxide kind of seems to get stuck in small pores/blackheads and makes "bumps" or flaky looking patches in those areas.
I've read that zinc oxide tends to be less whitening than titanium dioxide, and depending on who you ask, zinc oxide is probably good enough for broad spectrum coverage (some will disagree). Which is the least whitening mineral product anyone has tried? I've looked at a lot of options. Elta MD has some where the zinc is combined with I think octinoxate, so maybe would give me a bit less chemical burn than the anthelios when layered under my tinted moisturizer. Becca cosmetics (the maker of my spf tinted moisturizer) makes a mineral spf primer that has only zinc as the active ingredient--kind of expensive, though. Any other recommendations? And do all of them have that blackhead-amplifying/ flaky effect?
It would be good for me to find a mineral sunscreen I can use b/c I suspect the daily chemical sunscreen use may not be helping my rosacea. But they always seem to look crazily white/grey on me, and I'm not that dark.

Can someone help me out as far as what destabilizes avobenzone and how big of an issue it is? Assume octocrylene is not present in the formulation. I ask because for the first time, I'm starting to use liquid products (e.g., tinted moisturizers) with spf on top of my sunscreen, and I want to know what will interfere with what.
I've been reading that octinoxate and avobenzone destabilize one another unless octocrylene is there to make everyone happy. I got a tinted moisturizer a while back that I thought would be my all-in-one, but it turns out the only actives are octinoxate, avobenzone and homosalate, so I think that wouldn't be considered a stable formulation? Then there is some question about minerals (I think titanium dioxide) and avobenzone not playing well together?

As you can tell, I'm on a bit of a sunscreen kick. I've heard some people say they can tolerate chemical sunscreens next to their eyes, but I am not one of those people! I have a pure mineral sunscreen that is okay for this purpose, but a bit gloopy (and I'm left with white creasing on my lids later in the day). I also have a powder sunscreen. I've heard people say to just rely on your sunglasses, but mine are not wrap-around, so the rays will get in on the sides--and although I always wear them driving, they don't cover me at work, where I sit next to a window. I'm hopeful maybe a pure mineral primer might have the texture I need. But just wanted to check whether anyone has an spf routine that includes broad spectrum eye area protection and works well for every day?
Part of my problem is I'm always rushing in the morning. I absolutely won't leave the house without sunscreen on my face, and I get it as close to the eyes as I can tolerate without irritation, but I just haven't found an easy enough way to make an eye area screen part of my regular routine.

Hi, does anybody know what is "Distearyldimonium Chloride". It is the third ingredient in my favourite moisturizer - "Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Daily Therapeutic Lotion, Body Moisturizer, Fragrance Free ". I could not find it any where on the internet or the Cosmetic Review website. Just want to be sure that it would be safe for use on face, forehead etc as it works better than any facial moisturizer I have ever used. It worries me that I can't find any information on this. At least I should be able to find out what is it made from, petroleum, synthetic or what?

I have just purchased an oil called "Bio Oil", the website states "Bio-Oil® is a specialist skincare product that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. Its advanced formulation, which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, also makes it highly effective for numerous other skin concerns, including aging skin and dehydrated skin" It really does seem to absorb into the skin really well, but it contains BHT,which is rather controversial. What are your thoughts on this oil, and is there a better (more healthy/effective) one to use on my dry skin?
Thanks for your thoughts!

The EU member states (European Union) commissioned a study on parabens through the independent scientific committee, the Scientific Community for Consumer Safety (SCCS). The results of that study have now been published, and the result is that parabens have once and for all been deemed safe for use in cosmetic products. It's about time! I've been on the soapbox for decades talking about the intrinsic safety of parabens, used at the proper loading levels, in cosmetic products. It will be interesting to see how the chemophobes, the environmental working group (EWG) and other naysayers take this brand new news. It absolutely shoots holes in all of their non-scientific claims and theories.

Here is a link to the announcement of the findings:

Hi,

I recently found 100 percent pure cosmetics. When I read their labels, it did not list any emulsifiers. I called the company to ask and they said the use none.
How is it possible to make a lotion containing oils with aloe vera juice or rose hydrosol, without any emulsifiers????

Any clues?
Thanks,

I've whined before about the calluses on my feet and since right this second they are driving me absolutely batty I thought I'd come here looking for those members, whom, like the BBs, know enough about chemistry to tell me if this stuff works.
So I searched and keep coming back to this Be Natural stuff - the majority of the reviews are good and it seems that it's the stuff they put on your feet in spas and such, but I could be wrong and the reviews could be paid. Unlike all the other gels and liquids on Amazon it's the only one with a full ingrediant list which makes it seems more legit - but before I spend the money, especially since the very first ingrediant is water, I want to see if anyone thinks it'll work.
Ingredients

Purified Water, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Disodium EDTA.
The other reason I want my calluses gone is I bought, at mom's insistance, some strappy heels. (I've learned it's just easier to agree with her.) And she insists, even though the shoes are black and the dress I'll be wearing them with is black, I can't wear black nylons - I have to wear those stupid tannish ones. (Why? Why can't I wear black nylons? Sounds so stupid to me.) Which means a pedicure - unless I can remove the calluses myself. Then it's just a manner of filing my toe nails. Save myself $30 + tip.

I wondered what your thoughts might be on Lapurete skincare (www.lapurete.com.au), a new(ish) skincare range from Australia. They claim to be a natural alternative to Botox and it appears as though a credible university has carried out research on the products, including before & after photos.

The products are far from cheap; AUD60 (around USD57) for 30ml for day or night moisturiser, but if it works, then I wouldn't mind paying the money so much.

Can you help cut through the beauty BS please?

I'm in my early 40's and I am starting to notice the first beginnings of true wrinkles (i.e., not creases or laugh lines), especially in the areas of my face that got sun damaged during my car commute (that was before I started wearing a daily sunscreen). I know sun damage (and aging) can't be entirely reversed, but what is everyone's take on the best ingredients to try that might make a small difference. I probably can't tolerate anything like a chemical peel because I have rosacea. I do wear a broad spectrum spf 30 every day to try to prevent further damage, and I'm using a product with stabilized retinol and vitamin C in it. I'm aware fraxel laser is an option if I really wanted to zap it, but it's not quite at that point yet. Any advice appreciated.
