What happens to powdered zinc oxide when you mix it with dimethicone?

Who here knows some chemistry? I need your brains!
I've been reading about physical sunscreens. A lot. And I'm starting to wonder how, aside from the nano-particle safety controversy, zinc oxide can be a stable sunscreen applied to the skin. According to Wikipedia it's degraded by most acids, reacts slowly with fatty acids in oils to form carboxylates, and when it's combined with water and UV light on the skin hydrogen peroxide is formed?! I guess that's why regular old zinc or titanium oxide sunscreens are so very greasy?

So I read about dimethicone-coated micronized zinc, Z-Cote hp1, but there's not a product out there with it I can afford (except Blue Lizard's face, which also has some things I don't want to use year round.) And of course, I think to myself, how hard can it be to coat some zinc oxide with some dimethicone? I mean I read a little about the process and yes, it sounded hard... but hey, I don't need the best-coated zinc oxide in the world, I'm sure it doesn't have to be all that...
Sooooo... Yep, my idea is to buy some dimethicone, micronized zinc oxide, stir a lot... really... until I get a paste I can mix with my moisturizer... either pour it in and, again, stir a lot, or if that's really not going to work, on the side like a primer, until I get bored with the whole routine...

How do you figure that'll work out for me?

(Don't worry, for sunburn protection I'll still use a chemical sunscreen. But I really want a safe moisturizer with some physical UVA protection, without uncoated micronized zinc, that doesn't leave me extremely greasy or white, that I can afford.)

So I just finished a 5-week ministudy that looked at "natural" preservative efficacy as compared to a paraben control. Due to lab restrictions and a $20 budget, I ended up only looking at tea tree oil & vitamin E. Not only did the results show that the rate of growth of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were higher with TTO and VE, but the VE tubes were actually more overgrown than the negative control (no preservative at all)! I know VE is an antioxidant, so it can slow the rancidity of oils to a certain extent, but I get really sick of seeing cottage formuale and forum posts extolling its virtues as a preservative against microbes. Still, I wasn't expecting it to enhance bacterial growth. I'm mining PubMed at the moment, but if anyone here knows offhand of any research that backs up my finding, I'd be much appreciated if you could point me in the right direction!

A makeup line for Bennett Jason Artistry may be on the way, but I notice that any time a new cosmetic line launches, it mimics products from lines already existing. There are products from existing lines that are amazing, but no line has the perfect product, and I would like to focus this on my line when it becomes reality, I dont want to mimic other products, but put a standard of quality for the client, the skin, and the line. This beauty line would be based on quality, efficiency, and optical illusion. Anybody interested in hearing further please be in contact.

Hi All, Freeze 24/7 first made waves with their Ice Shield face wash, which they have developed to leave a sunscreen on your skin after it has washed all the scum off. The Right Brain reviewed it in March here: http://thebeautybrains.com/2009/03/10/how-does-freeze-247-clean-and-protect-your-face/. She described Freeze 24/7's sunscreen face wash as "real technology driving product innovation." My question is about Freeze 24/7's "signature" Anti-Wrinkle Cream, which uses a different technology containing a natural muscle relaxant found in the body, Gamma Aminobutyric Acid, or GABA. Freeze 24/7 claims the effects are instant and similar to Botox, but without needles, paralysis of the muscle, or other harmful side effects. Here is a link to the Freeze 24/7 site: http://www.freeze247.com/technology3.cfm. What do the Brains think of this technology? Is it as effective and harmless as Freeze 24/7 claims? Any opinions about the effects of long term use?

An educator for a natural skin care line told me you should apply a serum after cleansing the skin, then

Hi there! I'm new on the forum, but I just wanted to say I love this blog and I'm a faithful reader of it. I'm particularly interested in hair care. The article on May 14 ("Two Natural Oils That Make Your Hair Shiny & Strong") basically confirmed what I was thinking, considering I'm a devoted user of coconut oil for my hair and I've seen great results.

Not that I was doubting The Beauty Brains' knowledge, but I always like to learn more so I looked up the article cited and found that it was incorrect (J. Cosmet.Sci 52, 169-184, 2001). That article only mentions coconut oil & mineral oil, not the other oils mentioned in the Beauty Brains' article. Was this an incorrect citation? If you have the actual article link, I would really be thrilled to read it.

Thanks in advance and keep up the awesome work!
Cheers,

It is WAYYY too long a story to tell you WHY the week before Christmas, at the height of the negative cash flow season, I am having teeth whitening done! Let's just say it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

I will be using DayWhite/NiteWhite from Discus Dental and is $350. With this procedure your dentist makes the dental jackets/trays from impressions of your teeth and you then syringe in the bleaching gel into the jacket/trays and wear the them 30 minutes-1 hr./day for approx 2 weeks when you dentist checks to see how the bleaching is going.

Yesterday on my first application I spurted the whitening gel out of the syringe and onto my desk instead of into the tooth tray. This morning my gums are a bit sensitive but I was told to expect that.

Anyone else tried any teeth whitening methods? HINT: Don't tell me if you have used DayWhite/NiteWhite and have had to sue your dentist! Or don't tell me that DiscusDental has been put out of business by the FDA.

I never have much faith in psychological research. Call me a science snob but I think they mostly make up theories and collect data to support their theories. But I guess that's why I didn't go into behavioral science.

Nevertheless, they do have some fascinating studies. Here's one that suggests people in committed relationships tend to look at same sex people more than the opposite sex. The surprising part is that even men in committed relationships look more at other men. They say it has something to do with sizing up the competition.

I don't know. It sounds reasonable but very difficult to prove. Do you believe it?

I assume that anyone reading these forums appreciates all that science can do for us. I also assume that everyone here already knew that men go for women who are good looking but now there's proof:

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2007/09/04/dating_hum.html?category=human&guid=20070904104530&

Those of you who aren't already attached now have one more excuse to spend money on health and beauty products -- you're just trying to increase the odds of finding a good mate.

I can't get my html tags to do do their thing so you'll have to cut and paste the link but it's worth it: trust me.

In another thread about Sarah, we mentioned that she has a tattoo. Of course, she denies this but I'd deny that tattoo too.

The other day I saw this entry on The Loom about science tattoos. Look at this gallery of tattoos that other scientists get. I think my favorite is the DNA molecule.

I don't have any tattoos but if I did it would be some kind of microscopic animal. I just love microbiology!

I have been experimenting with L-ascorbic acid as a way to get rid of dark spots and to counter act tanning so I don't have to mix up more foundation to match my summer hue. I have also read that you have to be extremely careful with it to prevent oxidation.
I am almost out of the first mixture that I made, which was L-ascorbic acid dissolved in a little, very little, water, then added to a little grape seed oil for night time use. I would like to try another batch but am unsure about the best way to blend it.

Any suggestions?
