I delude myself into thinking that if I read the New York Times Syle section I am "keeping up" and being selective about my consumerism...yeah right.
What caught my eye this week was an article on another "cult favorite" called Egyptian Magic. The BB weighed in on this some time ago but I would like to know if any one has tried this and what their experience was.
I must say that the last "cult favorite" I bought was Rosebud Salve...which like Egyptian Magic claims to be an "all-purpose" salve for anything from lips to cuticles. It is OK but rather greasy which I guess means it does a good job of being an emollient.
BB forum members please discuss this or any other cult favorite you might have used.
I've heard of rosebud salve but have never tried it. I've never heard of Egyptian Magic; I've seen lists of cult favorites in Allure and on various websites but I've never seen it listed.
The list of cult favorites that I use is embarrassingly long:
1. Smashbox photofinish primer - excellent product 2. Urban Decay primer potion (for eyes) - this stuff is THE BEST 3. NARS blush in orgasm - I can believe that this shade works for almost everyone; however, I suspect most people could find a shade that's better. 4. Laura Mercier tinted moisterizer - this has been discussed at length here so I know I'm not the only one here that uses it. 5. She Eumura eyelash curler - I assumed all eyelash curlers were the same until I went away for a week and forgot it. I bought a different (and admittedly much cheaper) brand and found it much harder to use. 6. Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner - I tried this because it kept popping up on those lists but I wasn't impressed. It's not as good as the Smashbox liner and I doubt it's as good as the Stila Smudgepots (which I will be purchasing the next time I'm near a Sephora.)
In my own defense... some of these I discovered on my own. I don't automatically run out and buy something because it's got a cult following. Occasionally, I think for myself.
One more, OPI I'm not really a waitress is a great red NP for fair-skinned women and deserves its reputation.
PurpleRules--LOVE the OPI Not really a waitress! In fact...I may be off to the salon before the football game today.
My girlfriend who really was a waitress always had that color on when we worked together. Funny, I was the hostess and wore it and she was the waitress and wore it..haha
PurpleRules: I will have to make a trip to Sephora this week to RETURN my Smudgepot in Bronze because of a terrible allergic reaction to it. DARN! I'm wondering if the culprit was the sparkles in it. Just thought I'd pass that along, since it was expensive. I'm looking at Paula's Choice Constant Color Eye Gel as an alternative. Also, what do you like about Urban Decay primer potion for your eyes?
PurpleRules & Cate: I also absolutely love love LOVE "I'm Not Really a Waitress", probably my fav. And you're right: It is a great color if your fair-skinned!
Judy: This will be an interesting thread. I already wrote down some of PurpleRules choices that I wasn't familiar with (Thanks, PR!). As I like to say here on the forum, I just love it when we make each other beautiful!
I must be the REASON that Rosebud Salve is a cult fave because I bought it when I didn't even need another lip balm...it didn't cost much which it shouldn't have. I also must admit I began to have second thoughts about it when I read how higienic the container was.
When I read about Egyptian Magic I thought "Well, of course, doesn't every woman want to look like Nefertiti or Cleopatra or...Liz Taylor?" From the article it appears that Madonna does!
Urban Decay primer potion is a cream to powder base that you apply and let dry before you put your eyeshadow on. It's applied with a sponge-tip wand, like lip gloss. After it dries, you put your shadow on and IT DOESN'T MOVE; it doesn't fade and it doesn't crease. I have dry skin so I don't really have a problem with oily eyelids but I've read the reviews on MUA and a lot of oily-skinned women also swear by the stuff. It does make it a little harder to blend different colors but it's definitely worth the effort. Also, it's not cheap and I'm not thrilled with the applicator but I've never used another eye primer that works half as well.
I googled Egyptian Magic and read their About Us page..
this line had me cracking up:
"Even pharmaceutical companies secretly acknowledged that products derived from all pure natural living sources are better than those products derived from chemicals."
while it's true to a certain point, scientists prefer to identify and extract the active compound in these "natural living sources" and purify them, or figure a way to chemically synthesize it.. case to point: Hoodia gordonii.. it works great, active compound identified, and scientists are figuring out how to synthesize it because the flowers are just not abundant enough..
anyhow.. onward to cult favorites..
i generally don't get stuff because they are cult favorites.. for example, i still haven't bought the smashbox foundation primer (even though i really really want to) nor have i bought Nars Orgasm blush.. like PurpleRules, I discover a lot of these myself or through my sister.. i'd go over and play with all their products, and end up finding out that oh, a lot of people love it too! well, that makes sense since it's a great product!
the only cult-favorite i fell into was Bare Escentuals Mineral Foundation..
I keep thinking of the Jerky Boys' 'Egyptian Magician'. "The cobra bit my eye!!".
Chemicals are natural. Everything and everyone is just a bunch of chaotic chemical reactions. [braaap] 'Xcuse me.... :p
There is royal jelly in my vitamins. In fact every ingedrient listed in the Brains' blog post seems like a food ingredient, even bee's wax to some extent. If I didn't know what it was, I'd guess it was a vitamin/supplement product.
I fell into EVERY cream hair removal system...Nair etc...I am afraid of epilators so I don't even think about them. And of course all the hair removal creams really suck for me for some reason...
There are so many people who adore NARS blushes. They are expensive but people say they stay put all day, last forever because a little goes a long way, and really do give a natural look to the cheeks. Does anyone think they are over-hyped or do you love them, too?
PurpleRules: I noticed you have their most popular color, Orgasm. What a great name...:shamed:
I have "Sin" too. It's a better color on me; it's got a little more oomph. I wear orgasm when I do the no makeup look. If's good in sunlight and some indoor lighting but under flourescent lighting, it's too pale and makes me look washed out. Most of the time I wear sin.
The NARS blushes are gorgeous. They apply beautiflully and stay on all day. I noticed on the Sephora website that many are listed as having "shimmer" but it's not SHIMMER!!! If you're in the market for a new blush and you like powders, definitely check them out. But choose carefully -- by that I mean don't just assume orgasm is the best color for you because of the buzz -- because they're expensive.
Never heard of Egyptian Magician either - wow, and I like to think I'm in the "know" about things. I used to work as a National Makeup Artist for Lancome. But, I'm not loyal to any one brand. I'll try everything and culminate what I like the best. So far my "it" everyday list includes:
Night:
1. Almay Eye-Makeup Remover Liquid (the oil based one)
2. Cleanser - Cetaphil (normal/oily and I only wash my face at night. How dirty does my face get while I'm sleeping? To me, that's a waste of product)
3. Aveeno Ultra Calming Lotion
4. Wild Oats Lip Balm (unflavored)
Day (splash my face with cold water)
1. Aveeno Ultra Calming Lotion
2. MAC Moisturecover concealer (NC30)
3. MAC Studio Fix Powder - only on t-zone (C35)
4. Tarte Gel Blush (Tipsy or Bliss)
5. Clear Brow Gel (any brand)
6. Stila Eyeshadow (Twig)
7. Stila Eyeshadow (Kitten)
8. Smashbox Jet-Set Gel Eyeliner (Black)
9. Rimmel Lash Maxxx (Black - I'm only using this until I find a better one. I like a lot of length, not too much volume)
10. Wild Oats Lip Balm (unflavored)
11. MAC Lipstick (Siss)
12. Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer (Radiance)
I know it SOUNDS like a lot, but I'm ready to go in about 10-15 minutes
