Paula Begoun wrote about AHAs, BHAs, and Retinoids in her Beauty Bulletin e-mail last month. When used together, she referred to them as a "formidable weapon in the battle against wrinkles and blemishes.
Since all of us Brainiacs like to know what really works rather than falling for the hype, I thought Id pass along the link if you want to read the specifics:
I can't believe that as much as I like Paula Begoun and value her expertise, I've never bought any of her products. After reading this article, I decided to "bite the bullet" and buy one of her AHAs (it was very reasonably priced compared to others on the market and had the pH level I was looking for) and also one of her gel eyeliners. I am anxious for both to arrive in the mail.
Has anyone else bought anything Paula's Choice? If so, what did you think?
I haven't bought any of her stuff....yet. As soon as I am back on track from the job switch I'm on it though. I really like how detailed her 'tips of application' are. I was never taught how to apply make-up and I want to look classy and natural when I do wear it. Anyway, I'm bookmarking her page!
I use Paula's Anti-Oxidant Serum and her 1% BH Lotion and like both.
You can always count on her products to deliver what they say BECAUSE she avoids HYPE. While these products don't transform you into someone with the skin of a 20-year old they do make your skin behave and I feel good that I haven't gotten ripped off.
Paula's products are simply packaged, have no fragrance, and are decently priced. While they may not be as "fun" as Benefit or the other prestige lines they do WORK.
I bought a lipstick once and it wasn't so great...it broke...so I wouldn't buy her makeup but her skin care products are certainly worth considering.
I read the article a second time and was wondering what's the best way to integrate an AHA product into my routine? I went to Sephora on my lunch and got an AHA treatment as my free sample so I guess I might as well start with that. Karen, did you get one of the exfoliants? Is it something you would use daily?
PurpleRules, I use the BHA lotion at night underneath my night cream. I also use a Zia brand Papaya Enzyme Mask occasionally for exfoliation. Since I have sensitive skin and rosacea I have to be REALLY careful with any exfoliant that is too strong or at all abrasive. Both the Paula's Choice BHA lotion and the Zia mask work pretty well for me.
I know this isn't super related, but I found out what helps my acne go away.
Birth control!
As long as my hormones are balanced, my acne just went away. I just get some small ones here and there now. Before my hormones were totally out of sync (blood test revealed excess free testosterone), and it showed on my face.
I'm not saying go on birth control, but talk to your doctor to see if hormones are playing a part. I did, and voila, clear face! I didn't change anything in my beauty routine either (except perhaps more sleep). =D
Back to the topic.. I do agree with Paula. She's done her homework and presented the facts as is. I keep recommending her products to my sister's boyfriend, but he thinks that his "Lava Soap" is the best. I'll forward this article to him and hopefully he'll be like, "ooohhhh".
I agree with Judy. I love the Paula's Choice skincare products, but the make-up doesn't seem quite as good. I use the 2% BHA lotion and the regular Blemish Fighting Solution (a 2.5% benzyol peroxide) at night. During the day, I use her antioxidant concentrate and sometimes the SPF 30 lotion (which can be a bit too moisturizing for me sometimes, so I only use it when my skin is too dry). Love all the products. Not to sound like a commercial, but if you are considering it, give her products a try. You can return them if you don't like them, too. My skin is so much improved from taking the advice from her book and using some of her skin care products.
I also agree with taiwanesegurl -- birth control helped clear up my skin too. I still get breakouts right before my period, and I even asked my doctor if switching to a different brand or trying something like Yaz would help my skin more, but she didn't think it would. Arg, the blemish battle continues!! :(
I was wondering then how to better combine the three ingredients, BHAs,AHAs and retinoids on a daily routine
I already use a salicylic acid wash (and topical products for pimples) and retinoids at night, will adding some AHAs irritate my skin too much?
when should I use it?
I just got Biologique recherche P50 balancing lotion (latic acid mostyl) and was thinking of using after my wash in the mornings, but I am afraid at night it will make my skin to sensitive to retinoids, any thoguhts?
Fitness Brain: For specifics, you might want to read a few of these articles by Paula Begoun at her website. She writes about the daily regimen you should follow when using BHAs & Retinoids together, emphasizing that it has to be done correctly. Follow the link below and under "Skin Care Battle Plans", you'll see one article specific to blackheads and another for fighting blemishes:
She doesn't talk about using all three. That might be too much. I think the use of AHAs, combined with Retinoids, are most often associated with the anti-aging fight. I guess it all depends on your purpose.
And welcome! I read your profile on the introduction thread. You should be a great addition to the BB community!
Thanks Karen
I just was thinking that preventing wrinkles and acne, are not mutually exclusive things, maybe it's too much
But theoretically speaking the compounds act differently, so there's no reason they can't complement each other
I guess It comes down to dosage
so I am doing a litlle experiment on myself, I do not have huge pimples, but I get those "under the skin" types, specially before my period
and I want to prevent wrinkles, and erase the marks of my tanorexic adolescence
here is my routine, I'll report back in a month
