Unbelievable beauty product claims.
  • Since it's not a chemical thing, I thought I'd just put this in general for discussion rather then making it an official type question to the BBs.
I was thinking today about other beauty products besides makeup that are out there. Mainly those "as seen on tv" things. Things like Smooth Away and Neckline Slimmer. (Warning, both have annoying videos and one will curse you with popups when you close. I also understand in regards to the latter if you order don't buy it through the company as they'll sign you up for something else and it's next to impossible to get off. Kind of like how when my mom ordered the Q-ray bracelets she ended up with health insurance from some company that really doesn't exist in Ohio.)
I'll admit to owning the latter - got it through Amazon though. I don't know if it works or not. I don't use it enough. Though my jaw is tired and sore when I do remember to use it. (I find it funny that people whom don't own one go around saying "Just excercise and your double chin will disappear" without realizing that the NS is actually a type of excercise machine - a resistance machine at that akin to the Thigh Master, just for chins. So people whom use it are actually excercising their jaw! Duh!)
And I've used things akin to Smooth Away before - great for exfoliating dead skin, don't remove hair worth a darn. Though I am tempted to buy a set - if I can find it for less then $10 - just to exfoliate things like my elbows and knees.
I don't know, folks, what do you think? Is there any truth to their claims that you've seen? Is there an ASOT beauty product that you've seen that you think works or wonder if it works?
Oh - and Strap Perfect - why the heck would anyone buy that when they could get the same results by buying a front closure racer back bra?
  • I've used Smooth Away and an old Sally Hansen product that 's essentially the same thing. The orange thingy that you stick the, um, sandpaper on, look to be exactly the same. The sandpaper that you got with the Sally Hansen was much, much better. I never tried using it on my legs or underarms but it was great at removing the hair on the top of my feet. The hair on my feet is really fine, too fine to pluck, and the Sally Hansen product removed it with a few quick swipes. The Smooth Away didn't work at all so I'm back to shaving the tops of my feet.
I've never tried the Ped-Egg because I don't like microplane buffers but I know people who swear by it. It's basically a microplane buffer with cheap packaging and a gimmick so I don't really see the point. Most of these products look cheaply made and aren't doing anything that a product you can buy in a decent drugstore do so why pay the shipping and handling?
By the way, I got Smooth Away at Ulta so you avoid the S&H, which is probably astronomical, the pop ups, and you can take it back it you think it sucks.
In general, I think these products are geared towards people who want a quick, easy solution and don't think things through. They're watching TV, see a commercial for Strap Perfect and think "I can't stand it when my bra straps fall down" and pick up the phone. These are the same people that don't realize that all you have to do is butter the pan if you don't want your pancakes to stick so they'll by a new pan instead of using a product that they've already got in their house. They can't pour their pasta into a collander without making a mess or shave their legs without slicing their calves open so maybe they've all got poor motor skills.

  • Oh I've got the PedEgg cause mom found it at a Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Works okay but because I like to be barefoot or wear my FitFlops (not saying those work either, though I do have ankles instead of cankles now, but I see no difference in the rest of my legs, they're just really comfortable) a lot my heels get really thick. I usually end up having to use one of those razor things cause even a pumpice stone in the bathtub when my skin is all wet and softer won't work.
But yeah - a lot of that stuff just seems like it's designed for people whom don't think at all.
  • I don't order anything off of TV because I know it will most likely be available in the Walgreens down the street in a couple of months. The strap perfect seems pretty awesome I was thinking about getting it. My daughter wants one and the pack comes with three in it and it's only $10, so what the heck i've heard good things and actually read some posts about it on other message boards.. I might have to make the purchase! Sure I could buy racerback bras and I have a few convertible strap bras from Victoria's secret and they work alright but i'd like to be able to turn any one of my bras into a convertible strap bra.
  • When it comes right down to it, these types of products make excellent commercials but don't work in the real world.
The Neckline Slimmer is complete BS and the advertising demonstrates a misunderstanding of the biology of skin & muscles.  Exercising your neck muscles will have no impact on the tightness of your skin.  Skin is loose because gravity pulls on it and the collagen and elastin have broken down over time due to aging.  The only thing that the Neckline Slimmer will do is leave you with stronger neck muscles covered by flabby skin.
Ab workout machines suffer from a similar misunderstanding of biology.  To get a six pack ab look, you need to do more than situps.  You need to lose weight.
Good topic though.  It could make a good post to go through all of these and explain whether they could & do work.  Got any more we can investigate?
  • Ooh, do Kinoki detox foot pads! ;)
  • Let's see, there's the exfolliating power of the Spin Brush. Oh! Excercise stuff - The Shake Weight! Electric belts. Sauna suits. Temporary solutions like Bump Its.

  • I just love the confused tree in the Kinoki foot pad commercial; the one that takes in nutrients through its leaves and expells waste through its roots. I can only imagine the buzz this generated in the world of botany since every other tree on the face of the earth takes in nutrients through the roots and pushes its waste into the leaves, which it then sheds.
  • I don't know about anyone else but I'm having a hard time coming up with more non-chemical beauty products. I keep thinking of that "Meaningful Beauty" but that's a chemistry thing.
I mean, yes, there's FitFlops and any other number of fitness shoes now. Like I said, I like my FitFlops, I don't think they've improved my butt and thighs, but I'm 240 pounds. A pair of sandles isn't going to fix that. But they've comfortable and I like them.
Thigh Master I asked a former Mr. Olypic/Mr. America and he said it actually does work because it's a resistance machine. Though non-adjustable. But he said that things like The Perfect Push Up and that pull up bar, that one that's suppose to do your waist while you spin side to side - those either don't work at all or only work for so long as you're out of shape. Soon as you're in shape because they're not resistance machines they stop working. He's a big believer that resistance machines are the best way to get in shape.

  • I think the Strap Perfect is a cool idea, and I'm thinking about trying it. Sure, I could buy a racer back bra- but bras are expensive, especially for me. I started birth control pills a year ago and my boobs got huge- growing 3 cup sizes. I weigh 105 lbs with 32 DD's. I certainly don't mind the boost :) but when I have to pay $60 for a bra, Strap Perfect sounds like a great choice. (I wonder what these tiny women with huge breast implants pay for bra? Where do they even FIND one??) Sorry- back to Strap Perfect- another positive is that you put the clasp higher or lower on the back to accommodate different racer styled shirts, which many racer bras can't do. It seems pretty neat.

And PurpleRules- I am SHOCKED at that foot pad analogy about the tree! I couldn't believe it either. People always ask if the foot pads "work" - well, if their products uses the same theory as does their tree- they DON'T! lol
  • Here's the thing though with Strap Perfect. It's just a cheap, thin piece of plastic. It will break on those of us with heavy boobs. (38 DDD here.) So what's cheaper in the long run? Constantly rebuying Strap Perfect at $10 a pop? Or spending $60 on a bra that can last you a good six months if not longer with proper care?

Edit: Oh, I know someone mentioned it in another post, but there's also the InStyler. My mom (a former beautiction) says there's no way it can work the way it says. As someone who's quite good at getting curling irons so tangled in my hair that I've actually had to either have it cut out or lose pieces of my scalp, I won't even try.
  • There's also that heel stick -- Heel-tastic? I know in the commercial the lady pops a balloon with the rough skin on her feet, but then she puts on this magic stick and within days she has smooth feet -- no exfoliation required!!! (right)
  • One of my kids is obsessed with that automatic toothpaste dispenser thingy. I don't understand why it appeals to him so much but he's convinced that it will change all of our lives. My husband spotted them at the grocery store and promised our little one that they'd go get one after school today. I'm secretly hoping it doesn't work at all and this will be a relatively inexpensive lesson that not everything is what it claims to be. I'm pretty much screwed if it does work. There will be no getting out if buying that thing for trimming your pet's nails and my husband will have join the Hair Club for Men unless he wants to have our son telling him "You know Dad, you do have a choice" about his baldness until one of them dies.
  • @Purple - I doubt that will be a problem.
  • Oh my mom thinks that toothpaste thing is disgusting. As she says "It would be so GERMY!"
  • Alright, I know there's been lots of studies about how those electric belts "don't really work." (I did read somewhere that while they do help you form ab muscles, they won't help you burn fat. Though they claim otherwise.) But as long as I'm trying to find non-chemicial beauty products I thought I'd include them in the list -
    http://www.thecontour.com/
    http://www.theflexbelt.com
    https://www.slendertonesystem.tv/
Admittedly as a fat woman whom hates to excercise, their claims seem like a dream come true, yet I know they don't really work. Still, it would be cool that if the BBs do do an article about things like Neckline Slimmer and BumpIts, these would be included.
  • Just saw another one that's an excercise device!
    The Jyze Pro!
Now everything I've read on excercise and the equipment says there's no way to target just one area. And if you work out it will burn wherever it's easiest to burn - which is why boobs lose more fat then stomaches. So their claims that this will "take 3 inches off your arms" and "100% of women" found it effective just doesn't ring true to me!

var addthis_pub="legluxe";I normally don't post after myself but I want to keep this one forefront just incase. Anyway - I found another one!

Hey, if that works can I get something like that for my entire body?! LOL

On a side note, I actually am trying to find a body shaper with sleeves. But I want a short sleeved one that also does the back and isn't a full body one. Just the top. Dr. Rey used to make one but apparently not anymore. And being fat I actually am having trouble finding one in my size. I need a 2X in the "nude" color.
