I really should get my boyfriend's mother something for Christmas, but I really don't know what to get her. She's 56, works mostly at home (she builds dollhouses...really fancy dollhouses...and sometimes works at a flower shop), likes to cook, and loves fast cars. That's about all I know about her. And she's really into health stuff -- buys all organic, etc. She also lives in Florida.
Encourage her to create her own Amazon Wish List. Then get her something from that. Amazon wish lists are easy to do and make buying things people want much easier.
What about a gift card to a health food store or Whole Foods near her? If she's a foodie like me, food is definitely a gift :) Another cool gift might be a neat coffee table book with flower photography since she works at a flower shop. What about entertainment? How about a gift card to a movie theatre or theatrical company her town? Gift cards aren't impersonal if they are thought out, and you can always tag on little personal gifts in addition to them. Or, my standard, Godiva gift boxes. They are fancy, elegant, and YUMMY! Order from the website and they will ship it right to her. Who doesn't love chocolate!!
There are a ton of organic artisan chocolatiers around these days. I've had gift boxes sent via the Vosges (Naga bar with curry & coconut ftw!) website without any trouble. Amazon's gourmet section is a great resource! Chocolate is one of the areas where I actually support organic. One, workers who spray non-organic cacao trees oftentimes don't have the proper safety gear or training. Two, using pesticides and fertilizer on cacao that's not in monoculture plots can be pretty damaging to the surrounding tropical and subtropical ecosystems.
I really like the idea of organic chocolates or other treats. Sur la Table has some great cooking classes - that might be a fun gift for her and maybe a friend. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you could arrange for a luxury/exotic car rental for a day or a weekend. (If she's a greenie and a speed demon, a Tesla might be fun.) I did this for Fathers' Day a few years ago and it was a BIG hit. A quick Google search turned up plenty of rental options Florida. HTH! : )
My husband loves to cook and is always happy to get a gift card from Sur la Table or Williams-Sonoma but he get's really excited when he gets a gift card from Penzeys Spices. They also have gift sets that are beautifully packaged.
