My name is Misty. I'm 23 years old and I am new to The Beauty Brains. I stumbled across this website when I was doing research on the ingredients of the mineral makeup that was breaking me out. I was using the "oh so great" Bare Minerals. NOT! Stupid Bismuth Oxychloride was breaking me out. I know this because I stopped using the makeup and my face cleared up in no time. Since then I switched to CoverGirl AquaSmooth and haven't had a single break out. Which brings me to my next point....
First off, there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to things such as cosmetics containing preservatives or preservative-free cosmetics. The problem with society is that we rely too much on man for all the answers. As the population in this world continues to grow, we can no longer just put meat on ice and preserve it with salt, unfortunately...so we use preservatives so that we can process more food to feed an over-populated society. Well, unless of course you butcher your own meat or get it from a local butcher. Same with cosmetics.
If you are the one making the cosmetics, of course you don't have to rely on the store to buy any and you'll be able to use your cosmetics before they become contaminated. If any of you are Christians or even believe the possibility that God exists, then you should realize that he knew before he created us that we would have to rely on preservatives and whatnot for our needs. Therefore, I believe we were created to be able to withstand any so called "harsh" chemicals in moderate amounts. People underestimate the power of God. We can't just live in fear everyday and believe that anything and everything we use will cause cancer. (For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. - Job 3:25)
God is the ultimate creator and therefore he decides when and how we die, whether people want to accept that or not. Why should we be so paranoid about what we are exposed to everyday? The air we BREATHE has toxins. Why? the 3 letter word called SIN. Sin destroyed this world. Sure, everyone SHOULD eat healthy such as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water and not try to RUSH death by doing things to harm our body even more than exposure to a few chemicals...like DRINKING and SMOKING! This is where the scripture Matthew 4:7 should make some sense. “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”
That would be like me jumping out in the middle of the road while a car is coming at 70+mph and saying "well God will prevent this car from injuring my body." Drinking and ESPECIALLY Smoking is purposely destroying your health. God knows I have to shower every day, or rather WANT to...as it is I live at home with my parents because I can't afford to live on my own (can someone say economic depression??) Therefore I can't afford to live a 100% organic lifestyle, this including organic shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics. TOO expensive! and I don't always have access to stuff like that. I practically live in the middle of nowhere away from the majority of society.
I have a great uncle that lived to be about 90 years old that used DAWN Dishwashing Soap to wash his hair EVERY DAY and died without a single gray hair on his HEAD! and guess what? I may only be 23, but so far I have been very blessed and fortunate to be the ONLY one in my house that has never needed to be admitted to the hospital for injuries, medical issues, etc. I've never even had a headache, and by the way I use your average shampoo and my hairdresser says I have the healthiest head of hair she's ever worked on. Then again I don't dye, highlight or anything else that can damage your hair in time. I just wash it with regular shampoo and I let it air dry. I rarely use a hairdryer unless I know I have to go out in cold weather.
My point is, I eat healthy and occasionally I enjoy sweets and chocolate, and I use your average store bought products for every day use and i'm not on my death bed. If these Organic companies want us to purchase their products then they need to make them CHEAPER! People can't afford stuff like that in this economy. While also make it available at a big store chain like Walmart or something so folks like me that live in the middle of nowhere can have easier access to it rather than only having the option of buying it online. In conclusion, i'll leave you with this... "Whoever shall seek to save his life shall lose, and whoever seeks to lose his life shall save it." - Luke 17:33
This thread will probably be deleted but until then let me give you some advice - I believe in God, but even I hate being preached to. Nothing turns people away from God faster then someone whom preaches at them.
The best, only way really, to bring people to God is to live a simple, quiet faith and lead by example. When people see that a person with faith is happier and ultimately more sucessful, it will bring them to God too. It works way better then preaching at people.
I also suggest you and anyone else here read the book Why Faith Matters by Rabbi David Wolpe. Very good book and I should point out that the Rabbi himself used to be an athiest. More then that, his father was a Rabbi and his brothers are scientists. So science and faith were always discussed and compared at every family gathering.
So next time you feel the need, please don't SPAM a message board. I'm sure God hates SPAM too. Thank you.
While I agree there are other ways to lead people to God, including the way you mentioned, please don't think I was "preaching." I was merely stating that people shouldn't always believe what they see or hear because man will fail you. I was only using bible scriptures to back up facts on how paranoid people are when it comes to everything causing cancer. If you are a Christian, i'm sure you have read your bible and therefore you should know God doesn't want us living in fear. The only way I would be "Spamming" this thread is if I were "selling" a book or product like many other people do...but stating your beliefs is not "spamming" as you call it. You shouldn't be offended by this thread if you are a Christian, you should be more supportive instead of attacking me. God would only hate this message if I were using bible references to sell something to make money. You know, kinda like when they were selling things in church (even price gouging) and Jesus turned the tables over with anger and kicked them out of church.
BIG difference between "spamming" and "opinions." Thank you.
BTW - By you suggesting a book to read is considered spamming. Do you see anywhere in MY posts where I recommend to read any books? Nope.
So maybe I shouldn't be playing Devil's advocate, but when you said Jami shouldn't be threatened by this thread if she's Christian, how do you want non-Christians to feel?
Also, spam doesn't need to sell something. Your comment would be a lovely blog entry, and I agree with you on certain points, but as it neither asks a question nor starts a conversation (and rambles a tad), it's not exactly appropriate for this type of forum. It's interesting, though, I've never seen a Christianity-based argument against the organic hype. Kinda neat.
I don't want anyone to "feel" offended, but maybe I feel offended when I stumble across forums mocking and hating Christians. Yet, in this society somehow that is ok to do. Yet if I were to offend a certain religion or belief it's wrong? All of us stumble across something that offends or upsets us, but that's life. Also, do you have to ask a question to post a thread on here? I thought these places were open to discussions as well...but I guess since this has to do with God it's a big no-no and therefore can't be discussed.
I'm not completely against the big organic hype, but i'm also not going to live in fear that everything little chemical or toxin is going to give me cancer either. I also don't believe that all science is wrong. Afterall, God gave man knowledge to discover. It's how we use and observe science that can either be completely absurd or useful in positive ways. I will say that if I had the knowledge and resources to be able to make my own personal care products, I would certainly do so. Since I don't, i'm going to live my life, doing what I do on a daily basis and not try to act like I can run and hide from death. Regardless of how healthy our lifestyle is, we can't escape death.
Also, If "Christians" don't like being preached to then they shouldn't go to church either. Afterall, isn't going to church to HEAR the word of God PART of being a Christian??
Anyone can make the bible appear to support their beliefs, however absurd they may be, by selectively choosing quotes. God didn't intend for you to use products with preservatives any more than He intended for Heidi Montag or Carrie Prejean to get breast implants and appear in porn. Let's not kid ourselves.
People recommend products, including books, all the time. It's not spamming if you're not selling it. We'd all love to hear about products that you like and we don't mind off-topic discussions but don't expect to be taken seriously if you're going to proselytize.
I never said God "intended" for us to use products with preservatives, but that's the way it is. Therefore I think he prepared our bodies to be able to tolerate a certain amount of chemicals and toxins that he KNEW we would be exposed to on a daily basis. Plastic surgery is much different and a personal choice (free will)
I didn't come onto this website to lead people to God. I will say this again for like the 5th time...I am ONLY stating my opinions and beliefs, as is everyone else who comes onto this website. Living for God is a personal choice for all of us. Perhaps when someone is on a discussion board discussing porn, homosexuality, or porn maybe I feel as if they are trying to get me to support it? or they are only stating their own opinions or beliefs, like i've only been doing in this thread.
No need to delete the thread (although I don't exactly get the Preservatives / No Preservatives part).
It is an interesting perspective.
But PurpleRules is spot on. You can pick and choose things from the Bible to support anything you want to believe.
For example, if you want to believe that Slavery is ok, just look to Leviticus...
"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)"
And if you really want to follow the Bible, using makeup and beauty products (at least according to this guy) is a sin & should be avoided. http://www.thercg.org/books/tthbm.html
To me, both of these positions seem ridiculous.
I don't believe slavery is ok. Every Christian has different levels of views on certain subjects. That guy sees beauty products differently from how I see it. In some aspects, certain things are ok as long as it's on moderation. To be honest, I wear a lot less makeup than most women. I wear a little foundation and sometimes mascara, if even that. I also have 2 piercings in each ear, and the bible clearly states about how we shouldn't pierce or mark our bodies.
I think as long as your markings or piercings aren't in certain areas of your body that can cause others to lust (which is causing another person to sin) it shouldn't be a problem. Just like some people think drinking is ok in moderation as long as it doesn't lead to drunkenness. I, however avoid alcohol altogether simply because I fear of drinking too much and becoming dependent. There are quite a few people in my family that were alcoholics, my grandfather being one of them that died from alcoholism. I guess it's all a matter of personal conviction.
Misty Ann, first of all I am glad you found a makeup that doesn't make you break out. And it's an inexpensive drugstore makeup - even better!
I don't know much about the reasons that some people follow the organic only/ no preservatives route (except what I have read on this website). It sounds like you are saying that some people are using Scripture, or what they believe God wants them to do, to decide to use only organic/ preservative-free cosmetics. If that is true, could you say a little more about that? I am just curious to know what people are thinking.
.
I never said it was ok to malign Christians. I simply thought your statement that Christians shouldn't feel offended sounded exclusionary and I wanted clarification. This discussion isn't a "big no-no" because it involves the Christian God, and that supposition insults the maturity of everyone on this board. Rather, religious discussions rarely end well unless all parties are already in some degree of accordance. Based on your responses you don't seem so much interested in actual discussion, since you're entrenched in your opinion. What's the point? I agree with LB that your perspective is interesting, but ultimately this can only be a volley of opinion. Her slavery quote is a perfect example. There are only the most basic facts or research that anyone can present to support a stance. It seems pointless to me. Feel free to rebut me, but I'm not going to check this thread again, since as a non-Christian I don't know that there's any reason for me to participate further. I hope I didn't offend you personally; if so I apologize. Any slight against me I can shake off pretty easily.
To bluecatbaby - I too am glad I found something inexpensive as an alternative! I probably could have been acne free for a long time had I known what I know about Bismuth Oxychloride.
It's definitely not a BAD thing to live a completely organic lifestyle. If I could then I would, but none of the organic products i've come across are cheap, unfortunately. Some people do go strictly by scripture, and also have the money and resources for their organic needs. There are people about 5 minutes away from me that make and sell their own organic soap and oils. I use their soaps as my facial cleanser, but only because their bars of soap are 3.49. for a moisturizer I just apply vitamin e oil on my face lightly at night before bed. As far as other needs, I don't have the money to always buy organic, and even if my did my only option would be to buy it all online since I live in the middle of nowhere...and buying all my needs online all the time would get annoying for me.
It's all in personal preference. No matter what we choose to do or how we live. but to obsess or freak out over the idea that everything we are exposed to causes cancer is a little too extreme. It's better to just not live life in fear. Life is too short to worry all the time!
As to everyone else, I am not offended by any means.
Bottom line this is a beauty forum and you do have freedom of speech but respect that some people follow different religions and no religion is anymore correct than any other. Let's try to focus more on beauty products and not tie their effects to any religion
