I have been trying to experiment with lipbalm, lip gloss and lip stick to see which stays on better. Lip balm with coco butter stays on better then lip balm with out. LIp stick stays on better then the other too but, it is very dry.
In general, I think lipstick has the most staying power. Some of them are very moisturizing but they don't last as long as the "long wear" lipsticks, which I avoid because they're drying. I've pretty much accepted that the sheer moisturizng formulas that I like need to be reapplied frequently. They're still better than lip gloss, which seems to vanish even if you don't eat or drink. I don't know if the Nivea lip balm I use has cocoa butter or not but it lasts longer than most balms and it's not sticky. I use it alone, under lipstick and occasionally over lipstick.
Lip stick definitely lasts the longest because even after you wipe it off your lips are still a slightly different shade of their natural color. Also, it depends on what type of lip balm you are using
