Do cancer causing ingredient in your cosmetics scare you?
  • Someone questioned in today's Brains Beauty Newsflash whether there are any "safe" levels of carcinogenic materials. Since you find these kinds of materials in foods you eat, cigarettes, and alcohol clearly there is a safe level. Did you know your body even naturally produces Formaldehyde?

Does the presence of known carcinogens in your cosmetics scare you?
  • If it is in a small percentage that has been clinically shown to be 'safe', I don't see any issue.

However, I don't eat meat- so I won't be eager to use charred cow bones on my eyes.
  • Hey Left - I'm not sure that cigarettes are the best example of safe carcinogens. :fierce:
  • i just want the product to be labled. is there an ingredient name i can look out for?? (i'm guessing the terms "charred cow bones" won't be on there). i feel like it should be a choice, not something consumers are unaware of...
  • kpaige,

Unfortunately, there really isn't any good way to do this. Carcinogens can make it into your cosmetics in so many different ways that it would be near impossible to be able to track and list them. For example, almost any plant derived ingredient could have some trace amount of fertilizer or pesticide. There's really no way to detect it if it makes it into your cosmetic.
  • well.. no...

because everything causes genes to mutate.. and you'll never know what gene is getting mutated.. so..

it's not that I'm not scared of cancer.. but there's so much worse things than cosmetics that are carcinogenic..
  • I've always been under the impression that you're far, far, far more likely to develop cancer if you have a familial history of it, and barring being irradiated daily with, well, toxic radiation, tanning yourself until your skin turns to leather, or smoking, it's actually a bit rare to develop cancer?
  • You got that right. But sometimes we don't know what causes cancer and instead of admitting that something is unknown, people feel better if they have something to blame.
  • Well.. considering that cancer is due to mutation of your genes, and you do well.. you are formed from a combo of genes from your parents.. then yes, sometimes you might inherit a mutation allele, making your chance of getting that second mutation that gives ya full blown cancer a lot more prevalent..

it's all a matter of chance.. your life is a gamble when it comes to cancer, so what can you do? That's not saying you should go tanning without any UV protection, or smear EtBr all over yourself, but you know??
  • "smear EtBr all over yourself" made me giggle.
