I use an oil based cleanser but I have dry skin so I'm not sure how helpful this will be. I love it because it easily removes all my makeup (eye makeup included) and leaves my skin feeling clean but not stripped of every last drop of oil. It would work on oily skin as well because it would remove oil, grime and makeup without over drying your skin. I'd give it a try. Just be sure to rinse well. I use Lumene, which can be found at Ulta and CVS and is relatively cheap but I might try mixing my own just for fun.
I tried it and had unparalleled success getting rid of congestion. On evenings when I really took some time to massage, whole plugs would sometimes come out. Gross but very satisfying. On evenings when I just did a quickie OCM my skin came out clean, soft, and glowing. I stopped using OCM only because the hot washcloth got to be a bit too much for my rosacea.
A lot of the oils suggested (olive oil, etc.) are actually slightly comedogenic so, if you're trying to get rid of congestion, a combination of castor and safflower oils would probably be best. Good luck!
I often use vegetable oils to remove oil-based and waterproof make-up, since oil dissolve other oils and waxes. But as far as blackheads go, the castor oil won't dissolve the "plug" in the way salicylic acid does. Castor oil is often used in soap making to increase lather, but it has absolutely no cleansing abilities on its own.
PurpleRules- I have dry sensitive skin, just trying to clear out some old stuff on my nose blackhead wise, had been using moisturizer a bit too emollient clogged me up (finally have gotten over my need to have a top layer). I use Boscia Makeup Breakup Oil Cleanser (Sephora, Ulta) as a makeup remover.
Msgotrox- AMAZING, thanks soo much!!...yeah I was thinking Safflower and Castor as well with the hot cloth.
liobov- Salicylic Acid just makes my skin hate me... way to harsh for dry sensitive skin. My spot treatment is a mixture of Manuka Honey, Fresh Aloe, and Yellow Clay
it didn't get rid of my congestions or blackheads. i don't think anything can. but my skin was less oily. i have that weird skin type - oily on top, but flaky and very dry underneath. also it's amazing for getting rid of make-up, even the most smoky dark eye make up. i use oil cleanser now to take off my mascara and eyeliners and use purity cleanser on the rest of my face. oil doesn't irritate my eyes at all and all other washes or milks did so a lot. i use shu uemura so it's quite expensive so i conserve it this way, but i want to try cheaper Mac one.
bugabo0o - What strengths of salicylic acid product do you use? And most important of all, does your product use SD alcohol (ethyl alcohol) av a solvent for salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is a pain in the as to dissolve in pretty much everything, except alcohol. So a lot of cosmetic companies use great amount of alcohol in their products, witch makes them extremely drying and irritating. But the of the matter is, salicylic acid is the most potent treatment for blackheads, as it is truly oil soluble and therefor exfoliates within the pore as well as the surface.
I use Paulas Choice 2% BHA liquid, ( http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/two-percent-beta-hydroxy-acid-liquid/bha-aha-exfoliants ) but she has some other products with salicylic acid in lower concentrations.
However, some people are allergic to salicylic acid. They might be better of using AHA:s for exfoliation and a drying clay mask to "fish up" the excess sebum .
My skin's oily enough without adding to it. And I honestly don't see how washing your face with greasy old oil could actually clean out pores. Seems to me it would just make acne worse.
ok here goes salicylic acid kills me unless it is naturally derived...like strawberries (I forgot about that till now i may just do strawberry masks). I do use Ren F 10 which is a fruit enzyme mask that devolves dead skin im thinking its more natural AHA, but I use a Clarisonic on a daily basis for exfoliation it seems to take care of all my flakes and has really brightened my skin I love it. Also aspirin contains salicylic acid...so aspirin masks, I may try that as well.
well ok...The premise of the oil cleansing method is that the caster oil is a purifying oil and will draw them out but it is too harsh to use on it's own. Read on the website (http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com). Then you steam your skin with a hot cloth allowing the blockages to loosen. I honestly was just looking for testimonials like msgotrox. I already use oil to pre cleanse my face (boscia makeup breakup cleansing oil).
Have you ever tried to set up a blind or double-blind experiment to test the naturally derived thing? The reason I ask is because I bet the Ren mask, even though the enzymes were extracted from fruit, went through a "chemical" or "synthetic" refining process, so I would imagine you'd be sensitive to the mask but not strawberries. (If they don't refine it, you can stop reading here.) Also, I don't think aspirin manufacturers get their salicylic acid from willow bark anymore, so since you can't handle synthetic and/or processes SA, you should probably avoid aspirin masks.
bugabo0o - aspirin contains ACETYL salisylic acid. Small word, big difference. Topically applied aspirin has anti-inflammatory benefits but it won't exfoliate your skin.
I tried the OCM to get rid of blackheads that are very stubborn (didn't respond to salicylic acid or Differin.) I used a blend of castor oil and olive oil. After about a week the blackheads appeared to be smaller, but were definitely still there. But, I also got several tiny pimples, a type of acne I never had before. I stopped the OCM, and had no more pimples, so I think they were caused by my OCM. After reading the above comment by msgotrox, I am wondering if the olive oil was comedogenic, and I might try the OCM again using safflower oil in its place.
bluecatbaby: On a scale of 0-5, olive oil has a comedogenic score of 2. As part of a formula, it will be perfectly fine for the majority of people. If you're massaging it into your skin to get rid of blackheads though, you could probably do better. Safflower oil, on the same 0-5 scale, is a 0. HTH & good luck!
I'm the type to test things on myself esp. if it's within my budget. I tried this OCM for a week, and I ended up with more comedones. Of course I can't be sure if it's OCM that caused it, but it didn't prevent me having those comedones.
I use the oil cleansing method to wash my face, and I can't be happier with the results. I understand that it may not work for everyone, but it has definitely changed my skin for the better.
I wasn't sure it would work all that well for me since I have really oily skin. I also live in South Florida where the humidity usually equates to an oil slick of a face for me, but I have actually seen a reduction in oil since switching to this cleansing method.
Given how inexpensive the oil cleansing method is, I think its definitely worth a try! :)
