Hello all! This is one of my first posts on these beloved forums. I am having an issue with shea butter. I cannot get the stuff to melt into my skin. It seems to just lie there, giving my hands a waxy, crayon-like film. Does anyone have any suggestions for helping it melt? Would putting it in the microwave for a couple seconds be good, or totally bad news? Did I just get a crappy brand? (I bought it on eBay very cheap because this was my first use of shea butter and wanted to just try it out)
Normally Shea Butter melts right around body temperature. If you bought a cheap brand they might be mixing it with some higher melting solids. But that's just a guess. If you want the same effect but a lower melting, more buttery feel you might try cocoa butter. It feels yummy!
Also, remember that the pure ingredient is not necessarily designed to be put directly on your skin. Sometimes it needs to be diluted with a carrier oil of some kind to make it more spreadable. That might also account for the waxy, crayon like feel you described.
There is a palmer's cocoa butter balm that I think my suit your needs if you are looking for some SERIOUS moisture. Even a cocoa butter body butter would give you good results.
Additionally, I believe Vaseline just came out with a amped up cocoa butter line. I always trust Vaseline to give me good results. Unilever, which creates Vaseline products, has a veritable army of scientists churning out products that deliver!
I get problems with Shea butter also, it melts, but it makes my skin sticky for hours. Maybe I was using the wrong brand too!
The Shea Butter product I have been using is L'Occitaine's hand cream and I like it but can't say it is worth all the hype that L'Occitaine gives it. That said I have never had any trouble with absorption.
I think Shea Butter has become more popular these days because it is a GREENER choice than petroleum products.
