I need recommendations for shampoos and conditioners for curly hair. My son (the one who couldn't be bothered rinsing his hair) is suddenly interested in personal grooming. He got up early this morng to do his hair. That's not what he called it but that's what he was doing. He wants his curls to "stay out of his eyes". I suggested a hair cut but he said he just wants his hair to "stay up". He doesn't want them spikey; just "up". I think he needs a shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and maybe a leave-in product that will encourage his curls to do their thing. Any suggestions?
I wish I had some sort of awesome recommendation for you, but I am yet to find "the one" for my curly hair. I usually blow it out so I can deal with it daily, but when I want to set it free, I just use some Pantene Hydrating Curls shampoo. I then mix some of their super hold gel and some of Tigi's Control Freak serum from their Bed Head line and scrunch it in the ends of my hair. I might use a little more of the gel mix just to define some strategic curls, but after that I really can't touch my head at all. It ruins the curls and then my hair explodes. I did this when my hair was short as well as at it's present length(waist) and it works for me most of the time. I just hate washing my hair more than once a week if that often, and when I wear it curly I have to wash it the next day or I can't even make a comb look at it let alone go through it.
I don't know what "up" means with curls in your son's case. For some reason I just pictured a head band. Funny, but not "cool". Maybe he needs a pomade of some sort to sort of mold and hold the curls in his face? I have never used pomade, though. Sorry.
I don't know what "up" means either. I think he just wants his hair out of his eyes but is unwilling to cut it. I'm not sure if he cares how it looks. I hope he does; I don't want him going around looking like Don King.
If that's what he's looking for, he needs a strong hold gel. I have curly hair and love, love, love the curly hair gel by Back to Basics. I has great hold and curl activating ingredients, but it might be too feminine for him. If he wants the curls up like that, he basically needs to put the gel in, put his head upside down and scrunch the curls, then let dry.
Is the Pantene Hydrating curls shampoo a good choice? I think I he wants the Justin Timberlake look so I'll get him some gel too.
I'm looking at a picture of him that's a couple of years old and his hair is stick-straight. Did any of you guys have straight hair when you were little?
Um, my hair was pretty much just wavy when I was a kid, then got really curly when I was a teenager, and now is still curly, but much less so than when I was a teenager (but I can still make it super curly with gel and a hairdryer). I think it started getting less curly when I was about 20ish. Crazy hair. My hairdresser said that it's not unusual.
I've never had straight hair without blow drying and flat ironing it. it was wavy until I was maybe 2, but after that a curl explosion.
I just use pantene because it's cheap and easy to find. it doesn't leave my hair feeling "squeaky" so I don't get as much frizz. I have been looking into products from Mixed Chicks (http://www.mixedchicks.net/) because the pictures resemble my "type" of curl, but have too many other things to get rid of at home first.
I remember liking Tresemme's hydrating shampoo as well, but it's been years since I've used it.
sorry, purple! i'm getting in on this discussion a little late here. i meant to run back into my cabinet of products the other day and bring them out to set next to my computer so i could respond and then i forgot!
sooooo....maybe you've already picked up something? let me know if you have and your son is happy. otherwise, i can definitely tell you about a few i use (or have used but don't anymore) when i decide it's a "curly day".
just remember to condition, condition, condition! and don't forget to scrunch the hair, rather than comb it, and have him shake his head when he's done in the shower (yep, just like a dog does!...LOL). rubbing excess water out with a towel is a big no-no, too.
after decades of living with curly hair, i've finally mastered it. (although i've been wearing it straight again lately. it's kind of nice to have both options!)
I sometimes wish I had curly hair...my friend just got her hair cut like Sarah Jessica Parker's when she had it short and curly on Sex and the City and it looks ADORABLE! She uses all kinds of Aveda products on it.
For starters, he has to re-wet it in the morning. Even if that means sticking his head under a bathtub faucet or using the shower head to get it wet because I'm talking REALLY wet. (If my hair dries too much while I'm putting on my make-up, I have do this.)
You want to buy shampoos and conditioners intended for curly hair. They have a bit more conditioner. Pantene's line is very good. I also use a leave-in conditioner. Right now, I'm using Organix.leave-in shea butter conditioner for this. Leave-in conditioners mimimize frizz and maximize curl. Once I've done the "head shaking thing" (it will separate the hair into ringlets) before I get out of the shower, I blot my hair with a microfiber towel. If you don't have that, you can use paper towel and pretty much get the same results. Someone at this website suggested using an old t-shirt so that might do the trick, too. But definitely blot and squeeze, don't rub, and absolutely no terry cloth bath towels!
You can't beat Sally's Discount Beauty Supply store line for their knock-off CAT Walk product line called "Beyond the Zone". I don't usually shop there myself; I learned about the curly hair products at epinions.com. RAVE reviews for this one: "Noodle Head". It's one of my favorite products. It gives a softer-type curl. It comes in an orange tube and looks neither feminine or masculine so that won't creep him out! After you've applied the leave-in conditioner, squeeze a dolllop (fun word!) into your hands and then spread it a bit through your palms and fingers. Next, grab the hair in clumps. Scrunch the hair and lift it up on top as you do so. For more lift, apply a spray-in root boost. (For longer hair, scrunch while your head is upside down.)
AG's "Re:Coil" is another good one but is sold at salons and is more expensive. It will also give you soft curls.
If he wants a stiffer hold, buy a mouse for curly hair. I have found absolutely no difference between expensive ones and cheap ones so go for cheap. Another gel that's cheap but also gives shine to the hair is Physique's "Curl Creating Gel". The curls will stay in place but there won't be much give. I don't know if that's a good thing or not for him.
Attaching a diffuser to a blow dryer is great for creating lift where you want it, as well. Buy a hair pick. Apply the root boost product to the roots and then begin lifting the hair near the roots, with the pick in the places where you want the height, while aiming the dryer there with a low speed setting. You could also have him lean over so his head is upside down for the first few minutes of drying. That gives more height and volume, too.
Consider buying a pomade of some sort to separate the ringlets and improve the tips of the curls for short hair. My son uses one by American Crew to pull the curls this way or that. Sally's has a knock-off line of their products, too. That'd be cheaper, for sure.
God, this sounds like a lot of work! This may be WAY more involved than what he wants to do but I thought I'd offer my very best tips, just in case he gets frustrated with the results at first and you need to adjust. For me, these tips are the difference between so-so results and fabulous curl. Most important for me are the right products and then manipulating my hair before the products start to dry.
For so many years, I was frustrated with the end result and went right back to straight hair. A few years ago, I found a stylist who also has curly hair like mine. What a difference that made!
But I confess, I'm pin straight right now. A friend of mine with curly hair keeps threatening to put my picture up on "The Wall of Shame" at a popular curly hair website for "curly girls" who go straight. Noooooo!!!!......LOL
If none of this works, ship him off to me. I'll get that curly hair looking just like Justin in no time! (love the picture, Anonymousblonde!!!)
