Diet & Acne
  • I've been reading lately about the connection between diet and acne. I've been suffering from acne for the past few years or more, and I do not want to take pills if I don't have to. I'm just curious what everyones thoughts are on this connection and how strong you think it is. And another acne question... every time I get a pimple, when the actual bump goes away I am always left with red dot looking things on my face. No matter what I do I always look like my face is full of red polka dots. Does anyone know the cause of this and if theres a way to stop it? Thanks.
  • Tai recommmended in another thread, which I can't find now, using the salonpas patches to treat acne. I tried it and it works! Salonpas are the patches that you put on your neck for neck pain. You'll find them in the drugstore with the over-the-counter pain meds near the icy-hot and other topical treatments and, best of all, they're relatively cheap. I use the Clean&Clear Advantage Spot Treatment during the day and the salonpas at night and the pimple and the redness are gone much, much faster. Both need to be applied to clean dry skin before any other products (moisterizer or sunscreen.) I wasn't doing this at first and the products didn't work nearly as well.

Karen does some sleuthing and points a finger to possible reasons of why Salonpas would work against acne!
  • i couldn't find them at walgreens, cvs, or osco (a big chain in the midwest) when i looked about a month ago. i did look where you said they'd be, too, purplerules. have you guys seen them anywhere else?
  • I got them at CVS. I've never looked for them anyplace else but I'll keep an eye out.
  • I saw it on Walgreens' website!

Karen, are there any Asian grocery stores around where you live? Salonpas is normally sold there..
  • Yes, definitely. I'll try there next. Thanks!
  • annie13: I happened to come across this good article on how to treat acne at Paula Begoun's website. She briefly mentions diet but the emphasis is clearly on treatment options:

    Hope you find something useful.
  • thanks guys! I'm still trying to figure out how to stop these stupid hyperpigmentation spots though...
  • Put in "age spots" on the Search at the home page for this website. The Right & Left Brain have blogged about it before and have great information!

You might also try going to Paula Begoun's website to read about hyperpigmentation and options:

    Paula knows her stuff, too!
  • Hi annie13. I do think diet is a factor in regard to acne. This is my third year in college and the third time I have had a very bad case of breakouts. My medication for my acne improves my skin during the summer when I go back home, but when I come back to college, I break out so much even though I am still taking my medication consistently. I looked at my lifestyle while at college: stress level, amount of excercise, amount of sleep, and diet, and I realized that my diet encounters a huge change when I go to college. At home I mostly eat rice, beans, meat, and veggies for dinner, but I realized that at college I eat a lot of dairy. Sooo many of the main entrees are covered in cheese, and there is pizza always available, and ice cream is plentiful as well as cakes with icing and cream. I decided to go on a dairy-free diet and see what effect this would have on my skin. It has been almost two weeks and my skin is looking better. The breakouts that I had are clearing up and I haven't gotten many new breakouts. Also, all the breakouts that had appeared on my chin are almost gone now. I am very excited at these results and I will continue to be on a dairy-free diet because I really do believe eating too much dairy has been the culprit the past 3 years at college. I also have read studies online on how there may be a link between dairy and acne so I am doing my best to drastically reduce dairy in my diet. So far it looks very promising, so maybe you could give it a try.
  • Thank you for the tips! :)
