Hair colour help please - Salon charges a fortune!
  • Hello

I am a natural dark blonde but like my hair to be a lighter blonde so have always had my hair highlighted at the hairdressers. It always look good but I just can't afford it anymore.

I am quite willing to try a dye at home but have heard conflicting ideas of what type to use.

The hairdresser always uses a high lift tint, not bleach so I'm not sure whether to go for an ash blonde or non-ash blonde. I also have no idea what brand to use.

Any advice, or can anyone direct me to a different website which might help please?

    Many thanks.

p.s. I'm in the UK but advice from all over the world would still be much appreciated :-)
  • For an easy method of doing this you might get a Frosting Cap from the beauty supply and depending on whether you want warm or cool results buy the color (Ash for cool, Champange for neutral, Beige for slightly warm and Natural or Gold for very warm) Get a high-lift gel or creme and 30 or 40 vol. developer. L'Oreal Preference Mega Blondes  Or Excellence Creme or Feria.
  • I am just a forum member. I live in the US. My hair is wavy/curly. Like you, I have dark blonde hair. I use a semi-permanent color from L'Oreal called Healthy Look (color # 8 1/2). My hairdresser loves the way my hair turns out but says he cannot explain WHY this product works the way it does on my hair. All I know is that every 4 weeks I put the color into the roots, time it for 20 minutes, put it through the rest of my hair for another 5 minutes and then rinse it out. It blends the roots in well with the rest of my hair and does what I wanted it to do, which is blend the hair that is turning white in with the rest.

The color swatches on the side of the box do indicate the results you can expect to get with this product. I have found them to be fairly accurate with this particular product. As long as you aren't going a lot lighter than your natural color semi-permanent should work.

I am not familiar with other brands so I am of no help there. When I first started doing my hair I chose a L'Oreal product, liked it and have used it ever since. When they discontinued Color Spa I tried the Healthy Look that replaced it, liked it and am still right there with it.

If they discontinue it altogether I am in big trouble.  :p

    Hope that helps!
