Olay or Neutrogena?
  • I know that most of you use higher end products than these drugstore favorites but I would be interested in whether those of you who do use either of these brands have a preference.

Me...I use whichever is on sale or I have a coupon for. Both seem very good for basic skin care though I notice that BOTH keep fragmenting their market with new products so it is hard to differentiate. For instance this week I bought Neutrogena Deep Wrinkle Serum (a retinol product)..then afterwards realized they have a newer line of anti-aging stuff. It's hard to keep up.

    Please discuss.
  • I use Olay face lotion....very rarely though....I don't like face lotion. And I use Neutrogena face washes...
  • I'm not a big fan of Neutrogena for facial products, though they have a great deep conditioning line.

I use Olay facial cleansers and make-up removing wipes. The wipes rock, except sometimes taking of my waterproof mascara is a chore.
  • Definitely Olay for me, although I use a few Neutogena things occasionally.

Oh: And I'm still really mad at Neutrogena for not revealing how much retinol is in their products. My product review at Amazon stays "As is!"....LOL
  • I use the Neutrogenia oil-free sunscreen. I don't use any of the Olay products but they always get high marks when reviewed.

I think ROC retinol cream has the highest % retinol of any of the over-the-counter lines (drug or department store.)
  • I think each have their good products. I use the Olay Sensitive Foaming Face Wash in the morning, but for removing my make-up at the end of the day, I use Neutrogena's Gentle Make-up Remover (it's stocked with the make-up, rather than skin care). I also like the Olay Sensitive Skin Face Wipes.

When I need a waterproof sunscreen, I love using Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Sunblock. It rocks. :-)

I'm not a fan, however, of Neutrogena's acne products. I haven't tried any of the newer ones, but the ones I've used in the past have been pretty ineffective for me.
  • PurpleRules: I have an appointment with a dermatologist soon so I was holding off on purchasing a retinol to use in combination with my AHA. I did find some good ones online with these four levels: .15%; .30%; .60%; 1.0%. They weren't cheap but I know prescription strength Retin-A is very expensive in comparison. From everything that I've read, you need to start with a low percentage and then work your way up to a higher level.

I didn't know ROC made a retinol. Do you know the level in the product you're using?
  • The product I use comes from a salon so it's higher than what you'll find in the drugstore but lower then what you'll get from your dermatologist. I don't remember what the percentage is. I'll ask next time I'm there. I can only use it at night. I tried using it in the mornings too but that was too much. I'm going to order some of the Paula's Choice AHA stuff and keep my fingers crossed that it's not too irritating.
  • PurpleRules: My face is getting so dry. I'm worried it's the AHA. Once a day might be too much for me or maybe it's my rosacea saying, "Stop this!" I stopped using it about a week ago so my skin would be free of product effects when I go to the dermatologist.

If you have more oil on your skin lately, you should be fine. Also, her product is a good deal: I compared the price of it versus what they had at Ulta and hers was definitely cheaper for the same strength.

I also ordered a few things in her makeup line and disliked all of them.
  • Thanks for the input.

Sadly, I can now report that the Neutrogena Deep-Wrinkle Serum was bad news for me. It made my Rosacea act up so I had to dump it. I will admit that perhaps the reaction may have been exaggerated because I was on vacation and not using my other usual products but I think AHAs may be better for me that retinol products.

Now I am going to try Eucerin's Redness Relief Soothing Anti-Aging Serum with Coenzyme (it was on sale).
I may just have to return to the Paula Begoun products which NEVER irritated my rosacea. Live and learn!
  • Karen, My "winter skin" has arrived. So much for worrying about too much oil. I think I'll pass on the AHAs until the spring since I don't need to dry my skin out even more. I'll keep exfoliating with Cetaphil and baking soda.
  • I should have said this when I first posted DUH...I am addicted to Neutrogena's Ultra-Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock and I like Olay"s Sensitive Skin facial cleanser.

Once I found the sunblock I have really NEVER been tempted by any other day moisturizer. I did try another Neutrogena Sunblock with slighly different ingredients and it was too greasy for me.

Because I am financially challenged at the moment I am using Olay's Original Beauty Fluid at night which very basic without any of the anti-wrinkle, anti-aging stuff but still a very good moisturizer.
  • Haha, I actually use Neutrogena Cleansers but Olay Moisturizers (when I need a Moisturizer, which is rarely).
I think if you're looking for Anti-Blemish (Acne, Blackheads, and Whiteheads) then go for Neutrogena.
If you're looking for Ani-Aging, go for Olay.
