The eye cream challenge
  • I am self-important enough to open my own thread solely as a place for further discussion of my expensive nude skincare eye cream (which eye claim works, but which has little data to support my claim), earlier discussed in this thread http://www.thebeautybrains.com/vanilla/comments.php?DiscussionID=212&page=1#Item_31.  To summarize, my claim is that this product helps my dark under-eye circles.  What I am going to do is use nude eye cream on both eyes for several weeks, post a baseline picture with both eyes having been 'treated" by the nude cream, then discontinue use on only one eye, but keep using the nude cream on the other, and post a follow-up picture so we can see if the two eyes look different.
Please skim to the end of the thread to find links to the pictures.  Thanks!
  • I've been on and off using the Clarins products (I have to alternate with my regular products because clarins is too fragranced for my sensitive eyes) and I don't know if I'm just being hopefull but I do see something. will report back after I've used up my samples.
  • I love the idea of your control, I may do that too. It doesn't factor out every variable but it's something. As for the studies, the two that are in English both talk about the antioxidant capability of the compounds, rather than the blood flow regulation. An antioxidant benefit is definitely a good thing, but it doesn't do anything for dark circles. Yes, the brains posted an answer to a reader asking if there was any eye cream that would get rid of dark circles, saying that blood issues are below the skin and cosmetics don't go down that far. However, I like to think that because the eye area is thinner skinned, and because the capillaries are close to the surface, SOMETHING with a low molecular weight may have an effect. I do know that's most likely wishful thinking though. As for the difference between the bud and the other components of the plant, they would have different chemical makeups, so there may the a VERY high chance of a big difference in effect. But many of the components of the plants may contain the compound that has vascular effect (if it actually does, and lord knows which compound that is). We don't know until studies are done. This is why I love science, because if we look hard enough and experiment enough, we may one day find a potential solution for something so benign that bothers so many women.
  • Yeah, the reason I haven't posted an update is that I keep getting busy and forgetting (or not having time) to put on the cream both morning and night. I'd like to start with both eyes having been treated for a couple of solid weeks, then discontinue use on one eye.
  • That's true, I may have a ton of samples and whatnot lying around all the time, but in all honesty, the majority of the time I tend to stick to my tried and true products and just respond to however my skin may be feeling that particular day (for example the last few days Calgary has been unusually humid, so I've only used water based serums at night rather than a silicone based serum).
  • Interesting that you thought you were seeing some results from the Clarins. Maybe I've prompted a placebo response in you! Does it have SPF in it as well as fragrance by any chance? If so, that would be another reason you can't tolerate it near your eyes. I can't put any sunscreens except physical blocks near my eyes.
  • I can put chemical blocks by my eyes in many formulas, just not in those that are highly fragranced. My eyes generally respond poorly to fragranced products, I get water eyes from most eye creams (most contain fragrance, ironic isn't it?). If I stay away from heavily fragranced products, including things like mascaras, I have no issue.

As for my placebo result? It's possible, I am always hopeful.
  • I remember one time in my 20's, a chemical sunscreen ran into my eyes on a beach vacation while I was biking from the beach back into town. I literally couldn't keep my eyes open very much while biking the 5 miles. I got a large cup of water and flushed my eyes out with it, a great relief, but the redness was intense. When we tried to go shopping, we could tell that a jewelry store owner thought I was on drugs and were watching me like I might be there to take something.
  • That's terrible, but also amusing, there are social side-effects to cosmetic irritation too I guess!
  • Hi Lela, how is your irritating over-fragranced eye treatment project coming? Do you think you're seeing any impact on the dark circles? I still keep being too rushed in the morning or tired at night to put on my nude eyecream twice per day, every day. At some point, I'll have to just consider it my baseline. The most important phase of the project is when I keep treating one of the eyes and discontinue treatment on the other, because that's when you'd really see a separation if you were going to.
  • Anyone know how to post a pic? I've got a baseline picture I wanted to share.   Okay, I'm going to try this, let's see if this works...picasaweb.google.com/114940764953637194908/EyeCreamChallenge
If this works, the photos you'll see are of both eyes after using nude cream (albeit inconsistently, but equally on both eyes) for several weeks, all makeup and product thoroughly washed off in photos.  I would welcome any votes on which eye has the darker under eye circles at baseline.  I will now discontinue use on one of the eyes and will post a follow-up pic at post-test, which should show a difference between the two eyes if nude cream works.
  • It's really bothering my eyes so I think I'm going to stop soon. Sidenote, I've gotten a lot less sleep this past week than in recent months and yes, my dark circles have gotten much worse. I think I was just seeing a hopeful placebo effect.

I think I may nab your idea and apply "mountain ash" containing eye cream just to one eye and use my regular product on the other. But I think I need to find something gentler. Will do some research and keep you posted.
  • Sounds good, no need to make your eyes water for science lol.  If you have a chance, please check out my pics (link above) and vote on which eye (if any) has the darker circle at baseline.  Today I stopped using the product on one of the eyes, so I'll post a follow-up pic in a couple of weeks.  I've moved the voting here: http://www.thebeautybrains.com/vanilla/comments.php?DiscussionID=1481&page=1#Item_1
